Media and Society
Introduction
In the contemporary society, the media has great impacts on the communities and
societies. Sometimes, this impact is negative in nature while other times it is positive. It is
important to note that the media has received more freedom in the 21st century than any other
time in history (Bobek, Maček, Bradler and Horvat, 2018). One of the important areas that
the media has addressed is that of fair treatment of minority groups. It is important to note
that there have been great strides when it comes to fair treatment of these groups. However,
there is more to be done. We need to reach at a level where every individual on earth is
treated equally and with respect. By the virtue of being human, every human being on earth
should be treated with the highest form of dignity and respect (Osler and Starkey, 2017). It is
not only absurd but unreasonable for a person to treat a fellow human being with contempt
due to differences such as gender, race or culture. We need to learn to tolerate and love each
other if we are to create a better world for all of us. This paper is going to discuss the
importance of fair treatment of the minority groups. They should be treated equally at the
workplace and in other spheres of life. The media has a great role to play to ensure that this is
achieved. In addition, the leaders have the responsibility of encouraging people to
accommodate the minority and to treat them with great dignity and respect. Minority groups
are just as human as every person and should be treated as such. Is there a reason to
discriminate against the minority?
Fair Treatment of Minority Groups
It is sad to note that the minority groups have been historically discriminated against
in the workplace and in other spheres of life. Although there have been great improvements,
there is still more to be done. These groups have been treated unfairly when it comes to

opportunities for promotions, training, and personal development (Roach, 2017). It is unfair
to discriminate against the minority on these grounds. Looking at the situation closely, there
is absolutely no reason to treat these groups unfairly. It is only that some of us have some
perceptions in our minds that we need to eliminate. We need to be transformed in a way that
we see every person in the lens of being human and not through the lens of discrimination.
Harassment and bullying have been reported in some workplaces. These are criminal
offences and any person who commits them stands to be charged for their actions. In a
nutshell, we need to embrace every person and treat them with great respect and dignity for
we are all human.
The media has a great role to play to change the state of things in the society is as far
as discrimination of the minority is concerned. As noted earlier, the media has been at the
forefront to educate people on the importance of embracing diversity and treating every
person in a fair manner. This is commendable. The media should now make the campaign
even more aggressive to ensure that the few remaining cases of discrimination of these
groups are completely eradicated (Verniers and Vala, 2018). The media can do this by
educating employers and other members of the public on the importance of eradicating
discrimination. In addition, the media should educate the minority groups on their rights as
provided for in the law and the actions to take in case their rights are violated.
The leaders too have a great role to play when it comes to eradicating discrimination.
They have great influence on the people and their position on the issue is likely to influence
their followers. They should, therefore, employ an approach where they encourage people to
live harmoniously with each other without any discrimination. The leaders are often aired in
the media. They should take that opportunity to encourage citizens to be loving, caring,
respectful and treat every person with dignity.

Counter-Argument
Some people argue that the minority groups should not receive equal rights with
others because they have such qualities as being smaller in number or being different from
the rest of the population. This is, however, a fallacy that we should preach against at every
available opportunity. Let us think of it. Is there anything that an individual gain for
discriminating against another? Certainly not. Therefore, discriminating against a person on
the basis of their gender, race or other factors is unnecessary. It is important that the right of
every person be respected.
