The term sociological imagination was first introduced by C. Wright Mills. According
to Mills sociological imagination is recognition of individual situation and relating it with the
society (Kerr 2015). This essay focuses on how an individual has a perception of his/her own
life and understanding in the context of society. The essay is structured in one section
discussing about sociological imagination, its usage, benefits, concepts and examples related
to real life experiences.
Sociological imagination is defined as the ability of a person to view issues socially
and understand that issues and personal troubles are a result of social factors which are
affecting every individual living in it (Palmer 2017) Social factors like social norms, social
context, social structure and the other people’s act affects the social outcome. An individual
having sociological imagination is able to experience a normal situation out of his/her daily
monotonous routine by viewing from an alternative perspective in context of wider aspect.
Sociological imagination is possible when there is a connection between individual issues and
public issues (Orgad 2019). By understanding the history which made the modern society
and the people, it helps an individual to realise his/her relationship with the others in the
society.
The application of sociological imagination can be linked with everyday behaviour of
an individual. Like the term imagination, sociological imagination enables people to imagine
a daily life situation in different perspectives and analyse why it is done. A simple routine
like drinking tea or coffee in the morning can be viewed differently by different people. Some
may do it as a morning ritual because they have been doing it since a long time, some may do
it due to addiction of the caffeine, some may think it from the perspective of a healthy life
while some people can do it only for the purpose of socializing. In order to be able to use
sociological imagination one just need to step out of their own perception and view the
situations from society’s point of view. A personal issue should be viewed form the society’s

perspective. Like if a person is facing the problem of unemployment he will blame himself
for the failure however when seen from society’s perspective it can be seen that the problem
faced by that individual has its root in the society where different other people are also facing
the same problem.
The main benefit of sociological imagination is that it gives an understanding of what
is lying beneath the reality. Sociological imagination helps people to avoid viewing a
situation as natural. It creates a mindset among people to interrogate when anyone is doing
immoral acts and passing it off as a natural action. Thus turning the society into a better
place, making life easier and keeping individuals happy as they have done the right task.
Sociological imagination also helps to come out of the obstacle guarded by individual
perspective and connect to other people, in other words it helps to walk in other people’s shoe
and thus figure out some of the solutions (Pyyhtinen 2016).
Taking example of a girl who is suffering from obesity and wants to become thin and
fair complexioned. However when she is unable to achieve that look she goes under
depression and suffers inferiority complex. Wishing to be thin becomes an obsession for her
now thus making her a victim of anorexia by refusing to eat. When viewed from an
individual’ perspective this might seem as a personal problem that the girl is destroying her
life herself. However when sociological imagination is applied to this situation it can be
observed that the society is obsessed by thin and fair looking girls. It is the media who
represents society by portraying beautiful, thin and fair girls which affects many girls
indirectly (Veldhuis, Konijn and Seidell 2014).
Another major example of sociological imagination can be experienced while
choosing a college. Students from their own perception think that applying in the best
colleges, by passing the entrance exams, is their only choice. In fact there are millions of
students following the same path. However from the social perspective it is observed that

most of the students choose colleges in sync with their friends or under indirect pressure from
a tutor or family expectations (Agrey and Lampadan 2014)
Hence, it can be concluded that sociological imagination consists of two different
concepts individual and society. These two concepts should be connected to enable an
individual to view the relationship between their personal life and the events in the society.
Instead of sticking to individual perception people should connect to the wider society by
viewing it from different alternatives as that will help in making the world a better place by
finding out a permanent solution to the individual problems.
