1SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION
Sociological imagination:
Sociological imagination is the ability of the human beings to look at the society and the
societal problems in a different way, and to perceive the social situations by going out of the
way. Therefore, the basic definition of sociological thinking is to look at the society and to think
about the social situations and the social problems in a sociological way, which basically means,
not only to use our common sense but rather to look at it from the eyes of a sociologist. The term
was coined by C. W. Mills, and he had mentioned that all the social forces available at the
societal level, guide decision making skills and therefore, they must be looked at from the eyes
of a sociologist.
Considering this it can be stated that all the conducts or the choices that human beings
make are guided by certain social influences or factors, and it is seen that the individuals either
try to become as different and unique as they can be or they try to get involved with the social
trend. The former takes lace out of the aspirations of the human beings to become different and
desirable and hold apposition in the society, for example, the aspiration to be the best at the
workplace. The latter however, refers to the sense of belongingness that one possesses (Fabbre,
2017). The sociologist have claimed that the human race needs a constant feeling of
belongingness, and therefore, the claim of sociological imagination is that both the two
examples, which otherwise seemed normal, are basically guided by certain social factors.
The skills of sociological imagination is important to develop as it provides one to think
analytically and independently. Also, the sociological thinking helps one to unfold the
underlying social mechanisms and social factors, and therefore decide or choose independently
without any social pressure (C. Wright Mills- The Sociological Imagination. 2020)
