1SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION ESSAY
The concept of the Sociological Imagination is usually used to refer to the process by
which the human beings are able to think themselves away from the daily system of their
lives in order to look at them. In other words, it can be said that the process of sociological
imagination process is the ability by which the human beings are able to see the things around
them more socially, and how these various social process and activities of the humans beings
to socially interpret all these things.
The concept of the sociological imagination was first introduced by C. Wright Mills
who stated in his book on the subject that “sociological imagination is known to be the vivid
awareness between the relationship between the wider society and the experience of the
individuals seeing it”. This is what will be discussed in the essay itself.
The purpose of this essay is to describe a personal situation in the daily life and
to interpret it along the lines of the sociological imagination itself.
Before applying the concept of the sociological imagination to the personal situation
of the individuals themselves, it is important for the individuals to understand the concept of
the sociological imagination itself. The concept of the sociological imagination as it already
mentioned in the above paragraphs, can be said to be interpreted by the situations which
exists in the society itself. In his book by the same name, the author C. Wright Mills has
emphasized the importance of seeing the connections between the individual experience as
well as the social structure and the agency itself (Griffiths, Keirns & Sadler, 2015).
In addition to this, Mills also avoided his readers in strictly limiting themselves to
only one form of methodology because it might lead to the practice of getting results which
might be thought to be of confused or biased itself (Griffiths, Keirns & Sadler, 2015).
Moreover, C. Wright Mills also urged the scientists and the readers of his book that
they should continue their work in the field of the social science as a whole other than the fact

they should continue their work in the field of the social science as a whole other than the fact

that they should be specializing heavily in the field of the different subjects like that of the
sociology, political science, economics etc.
Mills also was of the opinion that it is important for the people to understand the
sociological imagination themselves. This is because of the fact that the more the people of
the society gets to understand about the relationship between the events and the happenings in
the society itself (Fraser & Hagedorn, 2018).
If the individuals getto understand the process in the society itself, then it will be
easier for them to understand the happenings in the society itself. It is because of this reason
that the author emphasizes on the importance of the sociological imagination in his book of
the same name (Griffiths, Keirns & Sadler, 2015).
In addition to this, the author also states the fact that the any action of the individuals
can be witnessed in terms of the sociological imagination itself. I agree with this because I
would like to interpret a personal happening which I have seen happening in the society itself
through the process of the sociological interpretation itself.
One of the instances which I have seen in my life is it is important to celebrate the 4th
of July or the Independence Day in the country. From a very young age, I have seen people
hanging out with their friends or shooting fireworks. They also got to the fairs, carnivals,
concerts or the baseball games. In addition to this, people talk about the martyrs who
sacrificed their lives for the independence of the country. The ministers and the political
leaders of the country discuss their plans for the Independence Day and what more can be
done so that the country becomes even more prosperous.
I believe the celebration of the 4th of July can be considered to be a part of the
sociological imagination because it is associated with the culture of the country. The reason
that they should be specializing heavily in the field of the different subjects like that of the

I believe the celebration of the 4th of July can be considered to be a part of the
sociological imagination because it is associated with the culture of the country. The reason

3SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION ESSAY
for this is that it is associated with the culture of the country. There are also feelings of
patriotism which is associated with the occasion.
When this event is going to be analysed in terms of the sociological imagination, it
can be said there are a number of reason why it is a part of the sociological imagination
theory. The first dimension of the sociological imagination can be said to be the culture. The
4th of July is an important part of the American culture because it is related to the
independence of the country (Comaroff et al.2017). Therefore, it is considered to be
mandatory for the people of the society to celebrate the 4th of July in the country. This is what
the kids and teenagers are taught from their young age by their teachers and parents. Hence,
they celebrate the day as members of the society. If the people do not celebrate the 4 th of July
in the society, they will be considered unpatriotic and uncultured by the remaining members
of the society. It is the fear of being labelled as being unpatriotic and also because of the
patriotic feeling that the people of the society celebrate 4th of July (Savransky 2017).
The second dimension of the sociological dimension can be considered to be the
moral development of the individuals in the society. In accordance with this dimension of the
sociological imagination, it can be said that the celebration of 4th of July is considered to be
the moral development of the people (Comaroff et al. 2019). The 4th of July was a day of
historic significance in the country. It is the day when the country gained Independence
because of the sacrifices made by the people. There celebrating the 4th of July is considered to
be the morality of the people. The people celebrate the day as a remembrance to the fallen
soldiers of the past. If the day is not celebrated, then it can be said that the people do not have
any kind of morality or respect for those who brought the country its independence. Hence,
this forms the second dimension of the sociological imagination (Savransky 2017).

4SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION ESSAY
The third dimension of the sociological imagination is considered to be the
socialization. This is considered to be the way in which the people of the society accept the
societal rules and regulations as well as the norms of the society. Hence, in keeping with the
norms of the society, it can be said that the 4th of July has to be celebrated. The people
celebrate the day because they are responsible members of the society. In addition to this, it
can be said that the celebration of the day allows the people of the society to interact with
each other (Comaroff et al. 2017). They get to know about each-other’s take on the subject of
the independence of the country. The most important thing is that all of them can celebrate
the day as members of the society along with their friends and family members. If the people
do not celebrate the day, then they will be considered to be unsocial. They will not be
considered to be important enough to participate in the events of the society (Burrell et
al.2017).
The 4th of July is indeed an important day in the history of America. The country is
independent in the present times because of the sacrifices made by the people. Hence, it is
important to consider the celebration of this day to be a part of the sociological imagination
theory. Being members of the society, it is important for the people to follow the norms, rules
and the regulations of the society (Henslin et al, 2016). If they do not follow the norms of the
society, then they will not be considered to be the important members of the society.
Therefore, it can be said that it is the fear of being rejected by the members of the
society that people of the society have to abide by the norms and the regulations of the
society. The 4th of July also belongs in the same category. The people have to celebrate the
day as respectable members of the society. This is the reason why this forms an important
part of the sociological imagination theory (Comaroff et al.2019).

5SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION ESSAY
Analysing the findings of the personal issues, it can be said in this matter that the
most important causes of the social events which can be explained with the sociological
happening consists of three dimensions (Burrell & Morgan, 2017). The dimensions in the
society helps the researchers to explore the various reasons behind why the people in the
society touches the feet of the elders for their blessings in the society.
These dimensions include those of moral development, socialization and culture of
the country. These can be explained in the sense that the socialization of the people will allow
them to know more about the day and the significance it holds for the country. Similarly, the
moral development of the people can also be considered to be the part of the sociological
imagination (Savransky, 2017). The 4th of July and its importance should be in the morality of
the people. This is because the people need to remember the sacrifices made by the people in
the past. This is important for their moral development as it will help them to know more
about their country and how they can make their country better. The culture is the most
important of all the terms associated with the sociological imagination of the country (Burrell
et al.2017). The 4th of July is an important part of the culture of the country. Therefore, the
celebration of this day is considered to be a celebration of the culture of the country. This is
one of the reason why the people celebrate the 4th of July in America. All these factors help
the readers to analyse the sociological happenings as stated by C. Wright Mills (Griffiths,
Keirns & Sadler, 2015).
From the above discussions, it can be concluded that the sociological imagination is
indeed one of the essential ways of analysing of social events from various perspectives
itself. That is why it has been said by the author C. Wright Mills.
This is because of the fact that the sociological imagination can be used by the readers
themselves to interpret the various happenings in the society itself (Croizet et al. 2017). This
