1SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION ESSAY
Sociological Imagination is one of the most important topic in today’s world. The
term is used to the practices which the individuals try to think themselves away from the way
they see things in a natural way. What this fact means is the way by which the humans living
in a particular society of a particular country sees the events happening in the society in a
different way than they would normally. In other words, it can be said the sociological
imagination can be defined to be the various types of ways in which the human beings in a
society are able to interpret the things around them from a sociological perspective.
The term “sociological imagination” was first termed by the author C. Wright Mills.
The author has already stated to the readers in his book of the same name that the concept of
the sociological imagination can be defined to be the relationship between the objects in the
society itself and of the experience of the individuals who are witnessing the situation in the
society. The essay will discuss the subject matter of the sociological imagination to the
readers themselves.
The purpose of this essay is to explore the concept of the sociological imagination
proposed by C. Wright Mills and to explain a particular situation along the lines of the
sociological imagination.
Before the readers start to analyse the concept of the sociological imagination
themselves and applying it to the personal situation of the readers in the essay itself, it will be
useful for the readers to know about the term of sociological imagination and how the creator
of the concept used it. This can be best evidenced by the book written by C. Wright Mills.
This is because the author in his book has made the readers known about the fact that the
sociological happenings in the society and the ways in which the individuals living in the
society perceive such events themselves are said to be connected (Griffiths, Keirns, Sadler &
Scaramuzo, 2015).

2SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION ESSAY
While informing the readers about the concept of the sociological imagination, the
author had suggested his readers and followers not to remain fixed on any of the methods.
This is because of the fact that the author has stated that this might lead to the results being
not what the researchers expected, which ultimately leads to the results being considered to
be biased or confused. In addition to this, the author also wanted his readers and the followers
who are going to read his book to continue his research in this field and also the fact that
these researchers should focus on the subject matter of sociology, political science and that of
economics (Griffiths, Keirns, Sadler & Scaramuzo, 2015).
It is worth noting in this context that the author C. Wright Mills have always wanted
his concepts to be understood by a large number of people as possible. This is because of the
fact that the author was of the opinion that if the sociological imagination can be understood
by a large number of people, then it will only become easier for these people as they will be
able to understand the subject matter of the sociological imagination which takes place in the
society.
It has been mentioned by the author C. Wright Mills in his book that it is very
important for the readers to know about the subject matter of the sociological imagination in
the society itself, because it would be easier for the individuals to understand these events
when they see one happening in the society itself (Griffiths, Keirns, Sadler & Scaramuzo,
2015). This is one of the main reason why the concept of the sociological imagination is
considered to be the most important for the readers. The author has also mentioned to the
readers that the sociological imagination can also be used by the readers in order to interpret
the actions of the individuals in the society also.
In this context, I will be explaining a personal incident in my life which I will be
trying to explain through the use of the concepts of the sociological imagination itself. I will

be describing the event myself and explaining how this personal event can be interpreted
using the concepts of the sociological imagination (Griffiths, Keirns, Sadler & Scaramuzo,
2015).
I am going to explain a personal event which is commonly found by the individuals in
the society itself. This fact is the attending of the churches by the people of the society
themselves visit the churches every Sunday for the mass services themselves. This is because
this is what the people of the society has been told to do by their elders themselves. In my
case, I have found myself visiting the church every Sunday with my parents and grandparents
for the prayer and the mass service held in the church (Griffiths, Keirns, Sadler &
Scaramuzo, 2015). I feel that the people visit the churches because of their faith in God and
also to obey the rules of the society. This is the personal issue which I am going to explain
through the use of the sociological imagination itself.
When the personal event that I have mentioned is going to be analysed from a
sociological imagination, it can be seen that there are a number of reasons which can be used
to interpret the personal event of the people visiting the churches (Griffiths, Keirns, Sadler &
Scaramuzo, 2015). The first reason which can be considered in this case is the sociological
dimension. In the case of the sociological dimension, it is said that the people visit the
churches on Sundays as they have been told to do so for a long period of time (Griffiths,
Keirns, Sadler & Scaramuzo, 2015). This is because of the fact the churches hold mass
services on the Sundays and people have been told they have to attend the churches on the
Sundays. If they do not follow these rules themselves, they will not be accepted by the
members of the society themselves. Thus it can be said in this matter that the fear of not
being accepted by the members of the society is what causes the people to visit the churches
themselves. In addition to this, it is also said that if the members of the society do not visit the
churches on the Sundays themselves, then they will be facing various kinds of backlashes in

the society themselves. They might not be even be allowed to interact with the other members
of the same society in which they live. This forms the first dimension (Griffiths, Keirns,
Sadler & Scaramuzo, 2015).
The second reason is the religious dimension itself. In this case, it can be said that the
people visit the churches on the Sunday masses because of the fear of God themselves. This
can be best explained to the readers by the fact that the religious leaders have stated in their
scriptures about the various things which the humans should or should not doe themselves.
Visiting the church forms an important part of the list of the things to be done by the disciples
of God (Griffiths, Keirns, Sadler & Scaramuzo, 2015). This is what makes the people visit
the churches on Sundays or other days of the week so that they do not get cursed by God.
This forms the second part of the dimensions.
The third and the final part of the explanation can be considered to be the ethical
dimensions of the people of the society itself (Griffiths, Keirns, Sadler & Scaramuzo, 2015).
This can be best explained because of the ethic which the people of the society. In this case, it
can be said that the people of the society find visiting the churches and attending the mass to
be a part of their ethics themselves. As a result of this, it can be said that this forms the third
part of the explanation of the society itself.
Thus, it is seen from the various perspectives presented for the actions is the presence
of the sociological, religious and ethical backgrounds. All these factors points out to the
various reason why the people of the society has to visit the churches either due to the
concern of not being accepted by the society, or fearing the curse of God or due to their moral
ethics themselves. That is why, it is being said by the experts themselves that the sociological
imagination can be explained from the basis of various factors themselves (Griffiths, Keirns,
Sadler & Scaramuzo, 2015).

Thus, from the above factors, it can be said that the concept of the sociological
imagination is indeed considered to be one of the important part of the sociology itself. It is
because of the sociological imagination itself that the researchers and scientists are able to
explain various sociological happenings in the society itself for a number of different
perspectives itself (Griffiths, Keirns, Sadler & Scaramuzo, 2015). Hence, this is the reason
why the concept of the sociological imagination is considered to be an important part of the
study of the sociology as stated by the author C. Wright Mills for the readers.
