2SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE OF RELIGION
Introduction
There are various sociological aspects which exists in the human society and
imparts a distinct character to every human community so observed. One of the main
sociological observations which can be noticed in such communities is that of
religion. The purpose of this paper is to understand this aspect of religion and the
other sociological ideas which are addressed therein.
Sociological perspectives related to religion
Religion is considered to provide a particular guidance to the adherents and the
worshipers who abide by it (Furseth & Repstad, 2017). The different religious faith
have their own religious doctrines which consist of various teachings, urging people
to follow them. Such teachings are meant to provide the individuals with a life filled
with compassion and love. Thus, the general sociological perspective related to
religion is that it gives people a sense of purpose.
Structural functionalism and religion
Structural functionalism was first coined by Auguste Comte. He was of the idea
that the human society is made of various levels of reality, some of which are
differentiated based on their matter (Cipriani, 2017). In this regard, religion
constitutes the mystical level of human kind which focuses on the supernatural
element.

inclined to a particular symbol, have a natural tendency towards each other (Flanagan

belonging to a particular religion, usually ascribe to that faith.
Culture and religion
Religion is considered to a subset of culture. Culture is a broad umbrella term
which includes within itself the various traditional values and customs which impart
personality to the individuals who are living within it (Possamai, 2016). Within the
culture of a society, the individuals are also found to be inclined to a particular
religious faith. In this regard, it can be seen that the individuals who ascribe to a
particular culture, also ascribe to a particular religious faith, often sharing the same
faith and belief system.
Socialization and religion
The teachings and doctrines of the various religious faith are inculcated within
the younger generation with the aid of the elders of the society. In this context, it is
important to understand that through the sociological process of socialization, the
older generation teach the youth about the acceptable behavior and way of life
(Furseth & Repstad, 2017). They teach them about the religious beliefs, the myths
attached to it and the traditional values which flow from the religious belief. Thus, the
perpetuation of religion is an aspect of socialization.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be observed that religion plays a significant part within the
lives of the individuals in the society. It dictates people with the kind of way of life
they should lead. In this sense, the paper has tried to understand the various
