SOCIOLOGY RELATED TO OTHER SOCIAL SCIENCES
Sociology is the scientific study of society, culture, social relationships and interactions.
Sociology is the study of society and human behaviour. Sociology is however related to other
disciplines that affect the society. Some of them are; biology, psychology, economics, political
science, history, geography and social anthropology among others. These disciplines depend on
each other. In this essay, I will discuss how these disciplines relate to sociology and how they
depend on each other.
Biology is the study of living things. Sociology is the study of how human beings interact with
one another in different environments. Biology and sociology share a main field in socio –
biology. Socio-biology is the study of how human beings socialise with one another and how the
biological processes and evolution have affected their behaviour. Fields like biology, zoology
among others are involved in socio- biology. Psychology is the study of the human brain and
how it functions. (Hemmings 58).Sociology is the study of the general human behaviour and
how human beings interact. They share a main field in social psychology. Psychology helps the
individual to function independently in their interaction with the community. Sociology
examines the people in the community, society and nations. It also focuses on how the groups
influence the behaviour of individuals. It mainly draws the attention to the aspects of human
behaviour.
Political science is the study of how power, democracy, dictatorship and communism affect a
community. Sociology and political science work hand in hand in that; the interaction of the
people in the society is considered during the distribution of power and leadership. History on
the other hand is the study of the past events and how they affect the society. For example;

history narrates how colonisation of the country took place, specific dates and the leaders
involved. Socialization is concerned on how the culture and the society were affected during the
period of colonisation.
Economics is also a discipline related to sociology (Ferraro and Andreatta 52). Socio –
economics is the study of the distribution of goods and services among people in a society and
how it affects their behaviour. Geography is also a discipline that relates with sociology in that,
the human population, health, demography and environment of a community is studied.
Demography is study of statistics such as births, deaths, income or diseases that change the
structure of a human population. Geography borrows the idea of studying the characteristics of
a culture and the society from sociology in order to study the population, demography and
health of the society.
From the above explanations, sociology and other disciplinary depend on each other. For
instance one cannot be able to study the demographic characteristics of a given place without
having the knowledge of how to interact with people in the society. Political science and
sociology are both related because they are concerned with the welfare of people.
