The title of the research question includes “Why activity-based learning is better for children of
age range 4-5 years compared to traditional learning?”
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to understand the importance of activity based learning in
early childhood in order to enhance the development of children’s brain compared to traditional
learning for children of age ranging from 4 to 5 years. The objectives of the research is to find
out chief activity based learning procedures used in the early childhood settings of Australia, the
methods by which the mention learning procedures enhances the learning ability of the students
and the effective methods to successfully implement activity based learning in the early
childhood.
Short literature review
The term activity based learning can be defined as the learning procedure where students
gain knowledge through performing activities. According to Sharma et al. 2015, during the 90s,
the early childhood educational settings were designed on the basis of traditional learning. The
educators used to focus chiefly on enhancement of theoretical learning of the children. However,
in this era, the inclination of educators to activity based learning procedures instead of theoretical
learning procedures has taken place (Chaufan et al. 2015). Some of the chief activity based
learning procedures that has already been incorporated in the early childhood setting includes
activities like gardening, play dough usage and others (Hand et al. 2017). When it comes to the
same for the children aged 4 to 6 years, apart from the mentioned activity based learning,
activities like solving puzzles, painting and drama plays are also use to enhanced their cognitive
and emotional skills along with the sense of belonging. According to Yilmaz (2016), gardening

based lessons plans are gaining popularity in early childhood setting since along with imposing
positive impact on the emotional development and sense of belonging of the students, this
method is also enhancing their fruit as well as vegetable intake among the children (Sullivan and
Bers 2016). Plan gardening program has demonstrated effective initial feasibility as well as
acceptability and is a promising program to enhance the preferences of food intake of the
children
Methodology:
Research design
The research design that will be selected for conducting the research is explanatory
research design. Explanatory research design is conducted in order to identify the extent as well
as nature of cause and effect relationship (Flick 2018). Considering the fact that the research
tends to explain why activity based learning is more efficient than traditional theoretical learning,
this research design has been chosen for the research paper.
Data collection
In order to conduct the research, the researcher will perform both primary as well as
secondary data collection. Primary data collection is referred to the data that is collected by the
researcher from fast hand sources with the help of using methods like interviews, surveys and
experiments (Fletcher 2017). In case of this research, in depth interview will be conducted in
order to understand the importance of activity based learning as well as theoretical learning.
Secondary data can be defined as the data that is being collected by the researchers from already
available sources. Some of the major sources of secondary data include literature review, reports
from government department, organization records and other. In order to collect secondary data

for this research, literature review of relevant scholarly academic articles will be conducted by
the researcher.
Data analysis
For this research, qualitative data analysis will be performed. Qualitative data analysis
can be defined as the processes and procedures though which the researcher can conduct in depth
analysis of the data collected (Bresler and Stake 2017). The qualitative data analysis method will
allow the researcher to determine the experience of individuals along with gaining in depth
knowledge of the factor associated with the research issue.
Instruments
In order to conduct primary data collection, interview will be used as an instrument. Each
interview will be 30 minutes long. The particular interview technique that will be used by the
researcher includes semi structure interview. The chief reason for selecting semi structure
interview for the research process includes allowing current theme to be addressed. The
mentioned instrument will allow the researcher to ask the participants specific questions that are
appropriate for the research issue and allow freedom for wording.
Participants and Sample
In order to collect primary data, the total number of samples I will be interviewing
includes 4 educators from four of Australia’s renowned schools for early childhood education. In
order to collect samples from secondary research, literature review of 10 scholarly academic
article relevant to the research topic will be selected.

Procedure
The first step of the procedure that were followed includes conducting research to
develop the above mentioned research topic and gaining the consent of my professor to carry out
the same. Once the consent is gained, I will develop a research proposal. The next step includes
going research design research methodology. After that semi structure interview of the educators,
preferably during the school time will be conducted by me. During interviewing my participants
I will keep in mind the ethical consideration. After the completion of the interview session I will
transcribe as well as code in order to allocate meaning.
Expected outcomes
It is expected that a good number of positive outcome of implementation of activity based
learning over traditional learning procedures will be obtained. Educators will incorporate more
and more activity based learning in the early childhood educational setting of children of age
ranging from 4 to 5 years.
Implications
Several researchers have been conducted on different topics associated with early
childhood. However, when it comes to the research topic that is importance of activity based
learning over traditional learning in the mentioned setting, limited amount of research has been
conducted. Hence this study will help the future researchers to further research on the mentioned
topic or relevant topic. Not only this, this research will also provide guidance to the educator so
that they can enhance the cognitive and emotional development of the children by implementing
the methods that will be discussed in the research paper in an effective way. .

Ethical Concerns
While conducting the research, the researcher will provide a consent form to all the
participants. All the participants will be made aware of the purpose of the research and they will
asked to go thoroughly thorough the consent form before signing the same (Alvesson and
Sköldberg 2017). No participants will be pressurized to answer a specific question during the
interview. Participants will be able to leave the interview whenever they want to. However, they
need to provide a feedback so that their reason for leaving the interview can be understood.
Confidentiality of the participant will be maintained. Hypothetical name of the schools and the
participants will be given.
