2STANDARD OPERATING ENVIRONMENT PLAN
1. Introduction
The standard operating environment (SOE) for Swinburne University of Technology is
comprised of some components such as: upgrade of windows 7 to windows 10 through the
computer lab rooms. There is a software supported image which is used for deployment
across the university’s staff computers. The image is included with an operating system,
standard connecting software along with security settings used at Swinburne University of
Technology (Cashmore 2015). There is standard hardware configuration for deployment of
various users at the university. In order to allow flexibility for the academic as well as
research purposes, the university upgrades its operating system. The standard software
applications are being tested against the configuration of SOE.
This SOE plan is for the Swinburne University of Technology for upgrade from windows
7 to windows 10. SOE is covered hardware and software configurations for the upgradation,
operating system as well as application software. It also define the scope of upgrade and
communication among the service staffs for proper upgradation of the operating system.
2. Scope and expectations
The scope of this SOE plan included of staff desktop computers, and software that are the
assets of Swinburne University of Technology, and used into the Microsoft Windows and
Linux environments. The entire SOE is supported by Information Technology Services (ITS).
The computers which are used for the upgradation purpose are treated as exception to the
standard. There is support of hardware and software configurations which ate facilities by
ITS and external vendor. All the technical equipment’s along with devices in SOE must
operate as pet the university standards.
The university can ensure that the functions are to be performed as per the expectations of
the client such as physical connect as well as set up of the device. It also ensures that the

customer can log on the university domain with proper username and password. It is ensured
that the customers are connected to default network home drive (Endsley, 2017). Proper
verification are done to the external websites. The local accounts along with auto login are
used at the university with ITS exception.
3. SOE for hardware
The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology (FSET) at Swinburne University of
Technology maintains list of hardware standards such as models along with hardware
configurations for the staff desktop computers. The computers are being sourced from
qualified supplier with use of fixed term contractual agreements (Golden 2017). FSET
manages selection of the suppliers through a tender processes with involvement from office
of planning along with financial services. When the purchase of hardware components are
approved, then compatibility with the Swinburne University of Technology infrastructure
along with system is not definite. The personal equipment are connected with the network of
selected university (Higbie 2018). The personal equipment which are connected to the
computing network of university is needed to be acceptable of security along with
infrastructure standards which are included of the following such as:
There is needed to have a secured administrator password for the computing
network.
There is disable of file as well as print sharing.
There is limited access to the features of operating system which also allow
access to as well as from the computer of users (Mangtani 2015).
There is required to have a proper virus protection system.
FSET is not provided any support to the personal equipment’s such as loading of the
software other than provision of advices with related to Swinburne University of

Technologywireless as well as dial up facilities. SOE base images are nit maintained once the
hardware has being reached end life cycle which is 3-4 year period.
4. SOE for software
The platform which is selected for the provision of SOE configuration is taken as
Microsoft windows operating system. FSET at the selected university is decided to upgrade
of the operating environment from Windows 7 to Windows 10 from its computer lab rooms.
SOE is maintained for the upgrade of operating system, university standard utilities along
with enterprise wide applications. The selected platform for the university is Microsoft
windows environment. (Sui, Ding and Wang 2018)The university wide applications are being
purchased along with designed for operating on windows SOE as the minimum requirement
of the university. The alternative technologies which may be used in the university are Citrix
and portal technologies which are used for deployment of the university wide applications
where there is practical work are done.
FSET has responsibility for SOE definition for each of the windows platform. SOE
definition is being published on software services website and it is being reviewed two times
yearly. The university elements are some occasional requirements to use of operating system
environments other than windows environment (Golden 2017). In such an instance, it is
responsibility of FSET to make sure that both university staffs and students have access to the
system of university as per the university requirements. It helps to make improvement into
the education of the students as the university desires to use of advanced technologies.
All the software elements are responsible to make sure about compliance with the
software licensing on the computers of Swinburne University of Technology. FSET has
responsibility to keep proper evidence of the licenses which are being used. It is consisted of
reviewing of software on the desktop hardware to make sure that the software is being

licensed along with there are no such probabilities of breaches of copyright (Welford 2016).
This new SOE plan helps the university to share information and data with others.
At the time of upgrade of windows, the Information technology Services (ITS) will install
of standard operating environment in addition to licensed applications will make sure that the
computer is being patched at approval of the operating system along with virus patch levels.
5. Communication
Both the SOE hardware as well as software configurations are being communicated to
Swinburne University of Technology via the website of software services. FSET is
responsible to list the changes to SOE hardware as well as software configurations on the
website of software services. Upgrade to the existing software configurations are done via the
software services.
