MITS5501 Assignment 3: Software Specification and Design Report

This report presents a comprehensive software specification and design document for the Western Book Supply Company. 1. Specification Document.
1.1 Executive Summary
The Western Book Supply Company most of its business process has been manual .It has identified
weakness in current system and there is increase in inventory level there is high demand of their
products this results to staff to over work to maintain inventory levels so the company has to do
automation of its process .In this report we shall look in details about different stages for example we
will look in details about feasibility analysis, Requirement specification ,assumptions ,use caser
Descriptions and context model.
1.2 System Description.
The Western Book Supply system shall be running on the web. The system shall reduce work loads of
staff at the Western Book Supply Company, Maintain company’s inventory levels and Easy student way
of accessing books at their local university. The system also ensure Local University gets books in time
and right books. The system shall be able to be accessed global because it will be hosted and run online.
All service of company shall be shown on the system.
The web server shall be hosting the web-based system. The system shall be accessed using its URL by
typing its URL on the web using webbrowers such us Mozilla firefox it will take you to link of the
system. The analysis of algorithm to compute inventory will be effective and updating of server will
take few second.

The idea to develop this system sprouted after seeing increase in staff over work and elimination of
wastage at work.
The Western Book Supply system enables students to order books on the system. Local university shall
be able to request for books to be supplied, system shall monitor levels of inventory and customer shall
be able to make payment for books ordered. The system administrator checks that all functions are
working properly and deals with maintenance of the system.
The activities that a user can perform while using this system include:
Logging in
View available books.
Order books.
Make payment.
Any student with a smart phone who regularly orders books at local university can use the western book
supply system. The system admin shall maintain the western book supply system.
1.5 Feasibility Analysis.
1.5.1 Project description.
This project shall ensure Western book supply company supply books in time, local university receives
required books, students order books and company’s inventory level are maintained .
1.5.2 Possible solution.
The project shall develop two systems as solution payment system, ordering system and inventory
monitoring system.Analysing of solution is takes and decision for coming up with required solution is
made.
1.5.3 Feasible solution.
The solution which meet economical, technical and production needs is selected and developed.
1.6 Requirements Specification
1.6.1 Functional
System users has to login on system with Valid user name and password.
The western book supply system will enables students in ordering books.

The western book supply system will enables Students in viewing books.
Local university shall request for books to be supplied on system.
The western book supply system will do inventory monitoring levels of the company by performing
some algorithm to computes level of stock
1.6.2 Non-Functional
Safety Requirements .
The system will not affect data stored outside of its servers nor will it affect any other applications
installed on the user’s phone or laptop. It cannot cause any damage to the phone or its internal
components. The only potential safety concern associated with this application applies to virtually all
handset apps or desktop: Western Book Supply system should not be used while operating a vehicle or
in any other situation where the user’s attention must be focused elsewhere.
Security Requirements
The system requires password and username in validating and enable them access system features.
Authentication of the user’s identity is done.

1.7 Assumptions/ Constraints.
1.7.1 Assumption.
All user have to have username and password.
All user have to be registered on system database.
System administrator has to accept user registration.
1.7.2 Constraints.
The system shall be web based.
Anyone to access system shall be connected to internet and access system using system’s URL.

The western Book Supply company has need to develop a system and design documentation is
important so this report shall look in details of different designs of company system to be
developed
3.2 Architectural Design
Western Supply system is composed of three main parts :User view on web browser, web based
application on web server and database. The system uses Much model for designing system.

The objective of designing team is to use MVC architecture is to separate application logic from the
presentation and busniess logic.
Model – Business logic. It is the representation of data structures. It is used in manipulation of data.
View – Presentation logic. It is the information that is being presented to a user. Normally, this is the
web page, but in Codeigniter a view can also be a page fragment (header or footer). Also it can be RSS
page, or any other type of “page”.
Controller – Application logic – contains logic of the page. It joins everything together and generates the
page for the user
