1SONG LYRICS ASSIGNMENT
The song is about a depressed, lonely woman, Lisa, by the singer Cat Stevens. The song
describes the emotional state of the woman, she is fragile and needs someone to help her find
the way out of her misery. In the first paragraph, “She hangs her head….” The singer
describes the vulnerable emotional state of Lisa, as she cries and seeks refuge in him. She is
said to “be hurt very badly”, the singer asks her what is wrong, why was she hiding in the
dark and asks her to trust him. In the second paragraph he describes, Lisa’s eyes through
which her inner pain and conflict can be gauged. He describes her eyes seem like windows on
which rain drops fall, visualising her tears. Lisa’s misery is evident, the pain growing deeper,
but he believes, his love will set her free. He says, Lisa is lost in her misery and she can’t
hear him, but, he would always want to be near to her. In the third paragraph, he describes her
miserable state, as she sits in a corner, all alone and fragile. He says, he would try his best, do
help Lisa from her predicament, he alone, could show her the way. The singer, hopes, that
one day, he would be able to free her even if no one could see her, for Lisa is in his heart. The
character of Lisa, could also be a woman he loved, and lost, through the song he illustrates
her sorrow and his void, and how one day both of them could be united in death.
