Slide Descriptions
Slide 2: Sony International has always considered its Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) as an integral part of its business. Its new business strategy involves recycling of old and
rejected products to design and manufacture new products in the Asian market in order enhance
business sustainability as well as take care of its CSR policy. The products under this strategy
include computer monitors, motherboards, lithium batteries, packaging materials, plasma and
LED television and others.
Slide 3: The main idea behind this strategy is to recycle and reuse the rejected electronic
goods for manufacturing new electronic goods. This idea focuses on reducing the environmental
impact of the rejected electronic goods as they contain high amount of plastic and other toxic
materials that cannot be decomposed. Recycling these products will help to control the pollution
due to electronic wastes and also reduce the procurement costs for the raw materials used for
building the electronic device bodies.
Slide 4: There are a number of advantages of the new strategy proposed by Sony
International. This strategy helps to prevent pollution through electronic wastes and thus helps
the company in maintaining its CSR values. The recycling process reduces the need for raw
materials needed for the production of electronic goods manufactured by the company. This
strategy does not have any impact on product quality, thus there are no chances of sales
reduction due to lack of quality. Thus, the company can easily set up its sustainable business by
recycling electronic goods without compromising with the product quality.
Slide 5: In some of the markets, Sony has implemented a new type of plastic, named
SORPLAS™ that is made from the recycled plastic from rejected electronic goods. SORPLAS is

a very high quality plastic that has less harmful effect on the environment and can be developed
from the scrap and rejected plastic materials. While the usage rate of recycled plastic in the
market is around 30%, Sony already uses 99% recycled plastic in its most popular markets. The
company now wants to implement this strategy in the Asian market as well.
Slide 6: SORPLAS, developed by Sony includes 99% of recycled plastic and 1% flame
retardants and other additives. On the other hand, recycled polycarbonate plastic used by other
electronic goods manufacturers includes 30% recycled plastic and 70% petroleum based virgin
plastic and additives.
Slide 7: The use of SORPLAS helps to reduce CO2 emission by at least 80% in the
products sold by Sony International. The use of SORPLAS helps to reduce carbon footprint
unlike virgin resin that is extensively utilized by most of the companies in the current market.
Thus, it is a useful strategy to implement the recycled plastic in the new Asian market as well.
Slide 8: This slide depicts the recycling process that involves the recycling of rejected
plastic within the operational strategy of Sony. The same recycling process will be implemented
in the Asian market by Sony.
Slide 9: In terms of the advantages of this strategy, it can be very much profitable for the
company if the implementation is done correctly. SORPLAS can be used to develop highly
stylish and strong bodies of electronics like Playstations, televisions and mobile phones that can
attract a large number of customers. There will be some costs for manufacturing SORPLAS from
the recycled plastic but it can be recovered from the product sales.
Slide 10: The proposed budget for the initial implementation of the strategy in the market
is shown as follows.

Cost Aspects Estimated Budget
Marketing Campaign $25,000
Set Up SORPLAS Factory $150,000
Transport System for Carrying Rejected
Plastic to the Factory
$100,000
Initial Investment for Initiating the Service in
the Market
$225,000
TOTAL $500,000
Slide 11: The strategy of using recycled plastic will help the company to reduce
operational costs without compromising with the quality of the products. It has been found that
the products can be manufactured from recycled plastic and it will help maintaining business
sustainability of the company. Thus it is recommended for the company to go ahead with the
plan for the implementation of the strategy but also ensure quality of the products are not
compromised while cutting procurement costs and recycling plastic.
