INTRODUCTION
Health and social care sector play a significant role in maintaining healthy lifestyle of
people through conducting health related programs and campaigns. Therefore, it is considered as
a backbone of an economy. Increasing problems in the living standards causes health problems
to an individual due to which it is required to determine the changes in health. The needs and
requirements of an individual related with health and social care services are changed due to
changing environment. The present assignment report is based on NHS hospital East London
which is engaged in providing health and social care services throughout the UK. The project
report discusses the health, disability, illness and behaviour of an individual, analysis of care
needs and current systems for supporting individuals with specific needs along with an
appropriate approaches and interventions, potential impacts of emerging developments, different
concepts and potential impact of challenging behaviour and strategies to work with challenging
behaviour in relation to specific needs in care homes.
TASK 1
1.1: Concepts of health, disability, illness and behaviour in relation to users of health and social
care services
There are various concepts related with health and social care sector which need to be
understood by the service provider in order to identify the actual perception of users related with
changing health and social care services. Such concepts include normality, disability, illness etc.
Normality is also called as normalcy which states the behaviour that is common in every
individual in terms of health factors. In many cases it may changes with the context. Normality
refers to the consistency between the bodily and psychological functions which drives a human
being to enjoy healthy lifestyle (Archer and et. al., 2011) On the other hand, Disability is another
concept which states impairments of human in terms of physical or mental which limit their
activities to perform in an effective and efficient manner. It includes multiple sclerosis, spina
bifida etc. from which an individual can suffer. The other concept is illness in which an
individual suffers by changing its emotions and perceptions on frequent basis. But it can be
monitored and remove through taking necessary precautions using health care services.

1.2: Assessment of how perceptions of specific needs have changed over time
People used to go health and social care sector at the time of urgency but now, they are
more aware about maintaining their health through getting routine check-up on regular basis. At
present, the perception of people towards disability and disable people along with their needs are
changes. At earlier it is pre-assumed that disability was a bad spirit or an individual attained
particular diseases by a devil spirit due to which they are treating very badly and asked them to
stay away from the society. Such discriminatory practices goes down over a period of time due
to changes in thinking of people. In the modern era, proper treatment has been given to such
people who are facing lots of problems in order to express their needs and performing regular
activities. The term equality has been implemented which directs society to provide equal
treatment to each individual whether suffering from health issues or not along with their specific
needs. Such kind of disabilities includes physical disability, mental or learning disability. In
addition with this, specific needs also may different according to the age of user of service. There
are various rules and regulations have been made in order to protect such individuals with
specific needs from ill practices of the society (Bowling, 2014).
1.3: Analysis of the impact of legislation, social policy, society and culture on the ways that
services are made available for individuals with specific needs
There are various legislations, social policy, society and culture which makes huge
impact on the service provider of health and social care. These aspects direct them to perform
their roles and responsibilities in an effective and efficient manner so that the satisfaction level of
employees and users can be maximised. For this, the government must ensure about
implementation of certain policies and laws framed by them for health and social care sector so
that the specific needs can fulfilled. The social policy of society is held liable to extend and
ensure that the services has been provided to users with specific needs. Social policy defined as
the social values and standards which is needed in society. The culture of society cannot be
neglected which also brings huge impact on the quality of services provided to the people having
specific needs. Culture is an essential aspect which need to be consider as it provides the
opportunities to dominate services which are offered to people with specific needs and wants.
For example, an individual facing difficulties due to physical defect then to protect them
Equality Act 2010 has come into existence and Mental Wellness act 2007 has been launched for

protecting the needs of mental disabilities. Apart from this, Health and social care 2012 also
came into existence with an objective of providing different rules that must be followed by the
Health organisations and the users of such sector. It direct health and social care sector to treat
and serve their customers equally and protect the rights of employees working in such sector.
National health service act 2006 states that the funds allocated to various health and social care
sector located in different locations should be done under the guidance and supervision of
governing authority. It ensures for better functioning so as to maximise the satisfaction level and
behaviour of customers (Coleman and et. al., 2012).
TASK 2
2.1: Analyse the care needs of Mr Holland Park with specific needs
It is important to identify the care needs of people suffering from any harmful diseases in
order to manage and safeguard the operations of health and social care sector. In the give case
study, Mr. Holland is facing difficulties due to visually impaired, hearing impaired, exhibits
challenging behaviour which is the initial stage of dementia such situation, brain and cranial cells
of body did not work due to which the chances of loosing memory are very high. To overcome
such disease, proper precautions need to be taken as per the guidance given by NHS Hospital and
its staff who assist him to adapt changes in their daily routine. Therefore, it is the responsibility
of NHS to first identify the specific care needs of individuals before formulation of strategies and
approaches. Through this, an internal strength of patients can be improves and maintain their
health standards among society. There are various care needs of Mr. Holland Park which are
required to be identified while providing them health services. It includes:
Physical care: It includes the treatment of the patients which are facing difficulties due to
physical impairments by adoption of medical approaches and equipments. It assist them to
prevent problems related with health and perform their daily functions in effective manner.
Social care: It is related with providing personal care, protection and social services
services to the individuals who are facing lots of difficulties related with illness, disability, age
etc.
Emotional care: It is related with maintaining healthy relationship or bond with their
patients by the health care sector. For this, staff members required to provide car services with
love and affection which increases the satisfaction of their patients.(Coleman and et. al., 2012).

2.2: Explain current systems for supporting individuals with specific needs
People having specific needs need to be supported for further improvement for
themselves as well as society. Such people are mostly underprivileged to use common or equal
rights and facilities of the society. Statutory organisations are such kind of organisation operated
and controlled by governmental authorities with or without taking support from shareholders. It
is engaged in providing health care services to Mr. Holland in order to enhance their living
standard. As the services are provided under the guidance of government due to which the
availability of services provided to Mr. Holland are high. This also required to comply with rules
and regulations made with the purpose of taking care of patients in order to help them in
overcoming from their harmful diseases. Voluntary organisation are such kind of firms which is
formed by two or more people with having common objective. Such organisation came into
existence with the purpose of providing welfare services to the society by meeting their specific
needs and requirements at right time. Non-profit organisations came into market with an
objective of maximising the needs and requirements of society instead of focusing on earning
huge profits. This can help Mr. Holland in getting best quality services regarding their health
issues which increases their capabilities to perform in normal way. With the help of these
organisations, NHS can facilitate Mr. Holland to get services by giving less efforts and cost
(Glasby, 2017).
2.3: Evaluate the services available in a chosen locality for individuals with specific needs
An individual desires to receive health related services from such organisations which are
located nearby to their locality. This can be in form of small care centres which are engaged in
providing medical care facilities and amenities to the users with less time and efforts. Therefore,
NHS should contact with such centres in order to facilitate huge amount of customers by giving
quick services in case of shifting the patients. NHS is offering various services to the individuals
having specific needs and requirements. Such services includes equipments for their treatments,
hygiene service and food services, availability of staff members, east accessibility to nurseries,
transportation facilities etc. which can facilitate patients to get quick services and enhance their
health standards. Therefore, to treat and provide better services to Mr. Holland Park it is
important to shift him towards such centres located in East London where all kind of facilities
and treatment system which can help him to recover from diseases as soon as possible. Along

with this, guidance of health experts are also present in such area for the people who are having
specific needs and requirements (Korda and Itani, 2013).
TASK 3
3.1: The approaches and interventions available to support individuals with specific needs
There are various approaches which can support an individual to deal with an issue and
interventions and maintain their health status among the total population are available and that
can be used to provide services to them. Such approaches includes empowerment, self-help,
direction, guardianship, shared responsibility etc. Self help facilitate an individual suffering from
various health issues to take care of their own by managing symptoms by itself. Empowerment
helps an individual to enhance their capabilities to make suitable decisions. Interventions may be
defined as the combination of strategies that will help in bringing changes in the behaviour and
improve the status of health in the society. Cognitive therapy is considered as suitable
intervention strategy that will be useful for Mr. Holland Park. There are various methods of
stimulating senses which can be used to activate his body neurons. For example, use of music
and sounds to activate the sensory and motor neutrons for Mr. Holland Park. It will stimulate the
hearing nerve which directly connects with the brain. .
3.2 Effectiveness of intervention strategies for an individual with specific needs
Intervention strategies refers to the set of operations and activities which are provided by
the medical team for improving the needs of individuals. Main objective of these strategies is to
strengthen the weak areas of individuals. These strategies are mostly used by the hospitals for
improving a certain area of individuals which needs improvement. In case of Mr. Holland park,
these strategies are used for improving his vision problems but these do not provide the
permanent solution for his problems. Through these, his problems of vision are improved up-to a
little extent. Using these will not completely improve the condition of patients but it can provide
the necessary strength to the patients for facing the problem with a little ease. Several diagnosis
procedures were conducted by the team of NHS for finding the solution of vision senses of Mr
Holland Park. Also, various types of sound and music systems were used for improving the
hearing problems of Mr. Holland park as a result his hearing condition is improving slowly. For
his joint pain, Doctors suggested him a proper massage which was given to him on regular basis.
The main reason behind the multiple problems of Mr. Holland park is that his level of brain cells

is very low as compared to a healthy person due to which his body senses are decreasing. Mr.
Holland park needs to follow the prescription and instructions provided by the medical team for
improving his sense problems. By following the suggested procedure, the obtained output is
comparatively better than the previous outputs received. His condition is now improving along
with his senses, so it can be said that by using the Intervention strategies, condition of Mr.
Holland park was improved and also effective results are obtained from this procedure (Moldan
Janoušková and Hák, 2012).
3.3 Potential impact of emerging developments on support for individuals
Apart from above discussed developments, there are several other development activities
which are associated with health services. These development activities are used for protecting
the patients who are suffering from challenging behaviour so that they can spend their life easily
and comfortably. There are several laws and regulations which are implemented by the UK
government for the medical service providers such as Mental Health Act 1983, disability
discrimination Act 1992 etc. All these laws are providing assistance to patients for getting the
suitable treatment at low prices according to their problems. There are also several organisations
like voluntary organisations donations, charity programmes etc. These organisations are
providing support and guidance to the patients who are not getting the proper treatment. It is also
helpful for the management of health organisations for removing the inefficiency from their
services. By understanding the errors using analysis, needs of patients can be resolved easily
which leads to improvement in the services provided to them. Trust building is very essential for
medical organisation in order to make better relations with their patients for increasing the profit.
Staff of NHS needs to measure the specific needs of the individuals or patients for improving the
efficiency of their workers. It will also beneficial for NHS to carry out their operations and
activities in a proper manner There are different emerging developments or technologies such as
Linear Accelerators, Image Guided Radiation therapy, Intensity Modulated Radiation therapy
etc. These technologies help an individual suffering from various difficulties to get better
treatments. .

4.1: Explain different concepts of challenging behaviour you will face while working in care
homes
Challenging behaviour is commonly present in patients through which they failed to
communicate their actual diseases and symptoms to their doctors and family members. For this,
it is important to create awareness and provide proper education regarding challenging behaviour
so as to change their mindset towards raising their voice against any unethical actions taken
against them. Individuals suffering from challenging behaviour mostly rely on the care centres in
order to get suitable treatments and care. Such behaviour mainly faced by the old age people or
children by birth with disabilities due to which they start to feel isolated and cut-off from the
society. It is categorised into different parts such as aggressive behaviour, violent acts,n throwing
things on other people or do sexual acts in public etc. Presence of such aspects makes difficult
for an individual to act or behave in normal way as it forces them to show their challenging
behaviour such as learning disabilities, physical disabilities, ill health, physical impairment,
drugs and alcohol etc. which brings them away from the social life (Reeves and et. al., 2011).
Old age people are facing various difficulties due to having joints pain and dementia
which makes them more dependent on their family members for performing different functions
and activities. Sometimes, people are showing such behaviours due to frustration which is
another major concern to consider for further improvements. In the context with Mr. Holland
Park, he act in a aggressive manner while admitting in the care centre. But some improvements
has been noticed after receiving a better treatments and services provided by NHS. Such
challenging behaviour can be treated well while engaging in proper treatment programs along
with giving them an opportunity to spend some time with their family and friends. Such
behaviours can be overcome through better communication and interaction of staff of NHS with
their customers (Shea, 2016).
4.2 Describe the potential impact of challenging behaviour on NHS Foundation Trust
In health and care organisation, there are many types of patients having difference in their
behaviour, cultural, social values, etc. Hence it is responsibility of managers of NHS Foundation
Trust to take care of it. Their behaviour affects organisational working style. Challenging
behaviour includes disability, illness, physical impairment, etc. This affects behaviour of

individual and they are not able to acquire changes which are relevant for maintaining decorum
of association.
There are some clients who have habit of in-taking alcohols, drugs, etc. which affects
other clients as well. Challenging behaviour affects operations which affects person's health and
well being. In case of aggressive behaviour of patient, then this affects property of NHS
Foundation Trust. In case of aggressive nature of patient, there are possibilities of misbehaviour
with employees of NHS Foundation Trust. Some clients are not anti- social, they do not want to
be part of social activities. In those case this affects planning of social activities by managers.
In case of Mr. Holland Park, who was suffering from visual and hearing impaired and in
earlier stage of dementia. This affects his behaviour in NHS Foundation Trust because he is not
mentally stable and not able to deal with activities of health care. This affects planning activities
of NHS Foundation Trust because of difference in perception of patients (Tyler, 2013).
4.3 Analyse strategies for working with challenging behaviours associated with specific needs in
care homes
There are different strategies which has to be followed by managers of NHS Foundation
Trust to deal with patients having challenging behaviour. This includes proper communication,
fair environment at organisation, etc. In order to make employees of NHS Foundation Trust
motivated there are different reward systems targets are clearly defined with assist personnel to
understand their roles and responsibilities. There is provision of proper medication to clients.
There is regular check up, so possibilities of improvement in their health are more.
In NHS Foundation Trust, there are some legal policies which has to be followed by
workers in order to provide good culture to association. There are some professional standards of
working which are relevant and significant to deal with changes in appropriate manner. Training
is provided to workers, so they are able to face mood swings of patients. in NHS Foundation
Trust, there are proper policies which has to be considered by employees to provide proper
communication to workers, so they are able to understand how to deal with adverse situation.
Managers of NHS Foundation Trust can communicate with clients to understand there
prospective and make them comfortable at NHS Foundation Trust. Proper code of practices are
clear to family members of Mr. Holland Park, so they are clear about plans, policies and working
style of association. When there is two way communication with patients, then it is easy to make
provide relevant environment and frame policies accordingly. There are some clients who have

aggressive nature, in this case NHS Foundation Trust has to provide them meditation facility, so
they are able to control anger (Health & social care, 2016).
CONCLUSION
It has been summarised from the above report that it is important for health and social
care organisation to understand the perceptions of human beings having specific needs which can
be changed over period of time. There are various legislation acts, social policy, society and
culture which can either make positive or negative impact on the individuals having specific
needs and requirements. It also required to analyse the current systems for supporting individuals
with specific needs so as to facilitate customers in getting best treatment services and enhance
their standard of living.
