Balanced Sport Funding: A Case for Supporting Non-Elite Sports

This presentation argues for a more balanced approach to sports funding, advocating for greater support for broader, non-elite sports alongside elite programs. It questions whether concentrating funds solely on elite sports benefits society as a whole or encourages wider participation at the grassroots level. Sporting success in elite sporting
events like the Olympics provides
fantastic theatre but does that
mean we can maintain or increase
funding when there are so many
more important priorities?"

 This presentation will speak “FOR” the motion.
 It is of major importance to fund broader and
non elite sports.
 Broader or non elite sports should be given an
equal chance of growth and development.

Changing trend of sport
funding
 Sports such as Surfing , ice skating, fencing
and similar activities should be supported.
 A proper funding scheme will create more
opportunities to foster growth of sporting
spirit among various sections of the society.
 The common section will not be encouraged,
if adequate funding and proper opportunities
are not available.

Why just the Elite?
Does the concentration of funds help the society in general? Does it
really cater to the requirement ? Does it help the sports get more
participation at the lower level.
 Many consider that allocating sports budget to the elite
participants will ensure the success of country at the medal tally,
some consider that the improvement of grass root level investment
is necessary to help create future competitive sport elites.

Elite sport funding: A time for a
change
 A considerate amount of funding is required to
manage sports at the elite level, which should be
balanced.
 Since, the funding for elite sports is done from
government funds all other sports have an equal
right to have a grant for their development.

Necessity of balanced funding
 Sports is an activity that allows recreation
and not just competition.
 It is necessary to cater to the growth of sport
activities rather than focusing only on
supporting elite sports.
 Non elite or Broader sports will generate
greater avenues for the investors to earn
returns and hence should they should be
funded.

A fair share for the non elite
 The need for investing for sports in grass
root level is also due to the major inequalities
in the standards and qualities of sports and
activities in private versus state run schools.
 Sports like archery, though is included in the
Olympics finds less participation and funding
in the lower levels.
