Slide1: Introduction: Mesut Ozil is one of the famous football player around the world. He is a
German international who is playing successfully for his country. However, in the aftermath of
2018 World Cup he resigned from international football with the allegation of having racial
attack due to his meeting with Turkish President Erdogan.
Slide2: Scenario of the issue: During the World Cup, two of the football players of German
team namely, Mesut Ozil and Gundogan met with the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Both the players have Turkish ancestry. However, this meeting caused anger in Germany due to
some political hostility between the two countries. It resulted huge criticism against Ozil and he
tweeted on 22nd July, 2018 that DFB tried to attack migrant German footballers by using racial
comments and resigned from the international squad subsequently.
Slide3: Stand of DFB: The DFB President Reinhard Grindel refuted the claims of Ozil
completely by stating that German Football Federation was never in a position or pursuing any
intention to endorse racism. The official website of DFB also claimed that diversity in football is
definitely enrooted into the culture of Germany and intertwined with practice of good
environment for the players irrespective of their ancestry.
