INTRODUCTION
Sports management is the management of aspects like finance, marketing, law and
business of sports in a country. In this project the Australian sport management is discussed. This
project identifies the also discusses unique features of sport management. This project provides
reflection over the facets which shape the Australian sport. In this project argument of whether
the Australian government should fund AIS is done. This project also argues on whether alcohol
sponsorship of Australian sports profession should be banned or not.
MAIN BODY
Unique features of sports management
The unique features of sports management are phenomenon which involve development
of individual talents and passion for their team or competitions. Two unique feature of sports
management are,
Product/Brand loyalty :
The loyalty of the consumers in the sports is very intact as the followers of a specific
team or sport are very unlikely to switch their preferences. Sport do not have any uncertainty in
their domination in the market. This happens because the audience of the sports do not have any
viable or direct substitute to the sport. This is feature act as an advantage but for some sports it
can also work as a negative element. For those sports which want to expand itself internationally
it becomes difficult to gain more followers or fan for that particular sport. For example, the fans
Australian cricket are the will be the fans of cricket only they will not start following any other
sport like badminton or football. Just like that it is very hard to convince the football fan to watch
Cricket or any other sport for that matter. The fans of some teams are so loyal that they feel a
high degree of connection with the team that they support and they are effected by the results of
the team (Nin, Saat and Ngalim, 2019).
Competitive Balance:
Competitive balance is a unique feature of sports management as the nature of the
relationships between sporting organisation that plays on field and their league. The league
manages the cooperate off the field this ensures the viability of the clubs to be for a longer term.
In normal businesses the company’s main aim is to acquire a larger market share and gain a
monopoly in the market whereas in sports management the opposition leagues, clubs, teams are
needed in the market so that there is sharing of revenues and that could regulate the outcome of

the games. The playing talents are also shared between the competitors through transfers. This is
required so that the interest of the viewers does not demolish by time. This could be perceived as
non-competitive but this is the essence of sports which is highly appreciated and supported by
the government and the supporters. In other industries the organisation can increase their
production capacity but the leagues are well stabilized with number of games and a rigid season
length (Maley, 2020). This sets a certain limit for the sports organisation to increase their
revenues by selling tickets and associated income. These create some challenges for the sport
managers and the organisations. These feature is crucial for a manager to know about as these
features are the essences of the sports management. The sports organisations are not forced to
adopt the new technologies as long as they are not related with enhancing the potential of the on
field players.
Colonisation Immigration and Technology in Australian Sport
Australia’s history of sport goes back to the old times during the Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people. These people had sports embedded in their lives and day to day activities.
Colonisation:
Australia’s early people who were the Europeans viewed sports as an activity of leisure.
The sport history goes back to the 1800’s when cricket, horse racing, professional foot races and
sailing were considered as popular sports and this was set in the colony of the New South Wales
back then. Australian sports past, present and future is effected by the development of the
country’s sport, individually and broadly and the development of some various important bodies
of sport. Thus, colonization plays an important role in the development of Australia’s sport
industry (Skille, Lehtonen and Fahlén, 2021).
Immigration:
The sporting immigrants is a ground breaking work which is properly acknowledged by
the ethnic contribution to the Australian sports. The introduction of new immigrants showed light
on many new sport in the country such as baseball, calisthenics, basketball, snow sports,
gymnastics and soccer making the sports popular in the country. The immigrants also helped in
the development of the mainstream sport of Australia such as Australian Football, Rugby and
Cricket. The Australians have achieved new and greater heights in the year 1990’s as it was the

time when the Australian sport was the most diverse. Australian government has always
favoured the immigration of new people in the sports industry. The government of Australia has
also introduced a Sports Visa for migrants who want to apply for citizenship as per the sports
quota (Spitz and et.al., 2021).
Technology:
Australia has the worlds best technology in some sports. The country has put emphasis on
some sports leaving the less conventional ones behind. Sports technology is highly productivity
as it enhances the performance of the athletes and increase the competitive. This growth in the
sports technology has taken the country to a certain advantage in terms of sports technology such
as USA, Great Britain, Germany and Israel. The technology increases the experience of the
person participating in the sport and as well as the event managers and the audience. Technology
helps in the development in the media broadcasting the games.
3. government should continue to fund Australian institute of sports
Yes government of Australia should have continue to fund sports institute. As it is said that
healthy nation will be considered as the wealthy nation. So government should focus on sports.
As healthy mind will be got only if the body is healthy (Feng, 2017). As physical and mental
both the wellbeing is essential in the life of the human. Sports is considered as the source of
recreation. It is helpful in providing relief and also relaxes the mind of the individual. Sports
activity will make body flexible and healthy. When government will fund spots institute then
more children will join those institutes. Then those children can even represent Australia in
different international level. There are many sports which includes badminton, cricket, football
etc and children can take training in these sprots and can represent Australia at international
level.
Sports is necessary to maintain health and physical fitness. It also helpful in building team
spirit. As in the sports like cricket an individual will work in the team so that will build team
spirit among them. As an individual will learn that how goals can be achieved with team.
Methods of diversion are also brought by sports. Olympic games which are held at international
level shows the sense of oneness and also the team spirit. Schools should also compulsory sports
and should have add in the educational system. As sports develop discipline and togetherness.
Sports also teach time value and build competitive spirit among the individual. If provided

proper training to the students in the sports then they can become sportive, daring, active,
adventurous etc. sports activities is the right thing to invest in and it makes the free time of the
students worthwhile (Bozyigit, 2019). So government should fund sports institutes so that
students who can excel in sports or want to make career in it can get forum for physical fitness.
Sports also teach the students to work hard and it will help to sharp the mind of the students.
Sports is also considered as one of the entertainment source.
Commonwealth games and Olympic games plays major role in the life of people. Better
performance of the athletes will only make the game interesting. So performance of the athlete
will get better only if they had provided proper training and practice (Ratten, 2017). So that is
why Australian government should have funded sports institution so that children can learn
sports in less money or free of cost. As government funded institutions will provide training to
those children who cannot afford to give fees but have capability to represent country at
international level. To give good performance, sportsman will be required monetary support.
4. alcohol sponsorship from professional sports should be banned in Australia.
Yes alcohol sponsorship from professional sports should be definitely banned. As sports are
viewed by many people including children (Getting the message: how alcohol advertising
impacts on young sports fans., 2021). It will give negative impact on their mind. As children will
think that alcohol is good for consumption because alcohol company is sponsoring in the sports.
As alcohol will deliver damaging impact on the children. Basically, by sponsoring sports, alcohol
company is marketing their products and that is not good for the children. As children can
develop habit of consuming alcohol. The marketing of alcohol has increased childhood alcohol
consumption and has also increased alcohol related harm. Researches has also proved that the
marketing of alcohol through sports sponsorship will definitely increase alcohol consumption
among children.
This will harm their body and mind. Excess alcohol consumption in the early stage can also
destroy the career of the child. If Australia will ban sports sponsorship then they will witness
reduction in alcohol consumption (Bogdan, 2019). As it is seen that those countries which has
banned alcohol sports sponsorship has noticed that alcohol consumption in the children has
reduced. When young generation will see that their favourite players are wearing T shirts and on
the back of the t shirt name of alcohol brand is written then they will get attracted towards it. As
young children want to become like their favourite player and will also want to consume alcohol
4

products because they will think that those players are also consuming it. Sports is the activity
which is also promoted by government because it helps in keeping mind and body fit and
healthy. And if children will see alcohol name then they will definitely got attracted towards it.
So that is why Australia should have completely banned alcohol sports sponsorship. As children
are the future of the country and in their growing age they should not have been exposed to such
bad habit of drinking alcohol.
By sports sponsorship, alcohol company wants to target young people to develop the habit
of drinkers or become drinkers. As alcohol companies will not make high profit if they will not
attract new drinkers (Brefeld and Zimmermann, 2017). By seeing alcohol advertising, children
got attracted to drink alcohol and then later makes it habit. Excessive drinking habit can also
affect health and lifestyle of the children. Medical experts are also pressuring government to
completely ban alcohol sponsorship on sports. Alcohol sponsorship also increases sporting
prowess and link alcohol with driving via supporting motorsport.
Conclusion
Through this report it can be concluded that report has evaluated sports management and its
importance. Effective sports management will promote sports in the country. Report has also
discussed that how colonisation and technology has affected Australian sports. As technology
has played vital role in sports. Government should have also continued to provide funding to the
institute of sports. So that children who cannot afford taking training at various sports academies
can join government funded sports institutions. Alcohol sponsorship should be completely
banned from sports. As it will present negative impact on the mind of the children and it will also
increase consumption of alcohol in the young age.
