Introduction
This report discusses the findings of applying a set of basic data science skills through use of SQL on a set
of existing data to help determine the viability of setting up a kick starter campaign for a group of board
games enthusiasts. By analyzing the existing data, information that can be very helpful to the group can
be derived to help them make decisions about different aspects of the campaign.
Data analysis
Data analysis will be performed based on the provided guidelines which are;
1. How much money to aim for i.e. setting up the goal
To determine how much money the group of board games enthusiasts should aim for it’s
necessary to get the average goal for campaigns that are similar in nature. According to the data
provided the best category matching board games is games which can further be specified to
table games. Using the table games sub category we can get the average goal for all campaigns
that have been successful so far. Failed campaigns are ignored because they can cause a higher
degree of inaccuracy thus focusing on only the successful will give more precise information.
By using this query;
select avg(goal) from campaign where sub_category_id in (SELECT
id FROM `sub_category` where name like '%table%') and
outcome='successful' group by sub_category_id;
Based on the results above, the group should aim for approximately 10258 as their goal.
2. Number of backers needed
The number of backers needed/expected for the campaign can be obtained by getting the
average backers for a sub category that is similar to board games which table games like in the
guideline above. Using the query below, we can get the average backers for successful board
games;

Thus according to the results the group will need atleast 785 backers.
3. Price of the rewards
The price of the rewards can be extracted based on the total money and the expected backers
thus by dividing the total money to the expected number of backers we can get the approximate
price for the rewards which is around $13.
4. Are the goals of successful and unsuccessful significantly different
Based on the data there is a significance difference on the goals for successful campaigns and
goals for unsuccessful campaigns. By using the query below, a clear illustration of the difference
between successful and unsuccessful is shown;

7. Influence the average pledge amount should have on the prices of rewards.
According to the data provided, the higher the pledge amount, the higher the prices of rewards
since higher pledges means that the campaign will have more money thus the prices can be
higher.
8. Does duration of a campaign have an impact?
By evaluating the average difference between the launch date and the deadline for both
successful and unsuccessful campaigns, the impact can be determined. The query below can be
