AI Summary
This report is a reflective analysis of workshop experiences related to stakeholder engagement in engineering. It examines topics such as water mining in the Tweed Valley, the Gold Coast City Council's management during normal operations and the Cyclone Oma crisis, and the relocation of a hospital. The report compares workshop insights with theoretical concepts and real-world examples, drawing on research papers to support its analysis. The student reflects on the importance of environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and effective stakeholder management in engineering projects, highlighting the need for awareness, collaboration, and proactive planning. The report also touches upon the significance of maturity models in assessing individual skills and effectiveness within a group setting.

Introduction
This research report is a reflective writing of the moments discovered during the workshops.
The report analyses the insight gained from the workshops and they are compared to the
theoretical concepts. I have chosen four different topics that are taken from the workshops. In
order to perform the analysis, real-world experiences and theoretical views have been
compared and contrasted. Insight gained from the workshops have been linked to theories and
case example found in the existing research papers. Major purpose of the report is to reflect
on the experience gained in the workshops.
Discussion
During the workshops I have observed a number of things that are related to
sustainability of the environment. I have understood the fact that environmental sustainability
is a major concern because due to agriculture and industrial activities environment is being
damaged. When working with a group of individual I realized the fact that every individual in
the society has be aware of performing the social responsibility with respect to consumption
and preservation of natural resources such as water. The incident of water mining in the
tweed valley has stolen my attention because when visiting the site I have observed a
gathering of people protesting against the same.
However, one needs to understand the fact that perseveration of water is a global
concern and when people being aware of the loss continue to be involved in the natural
mining in the restricted regions, need for a global awareness is often observed. Cartwright et
al. (2002) performed a study and mentioned the fact that since the forming, Water Tween
Mining has received a tremendous reports of bores and streams drying in the vicinity of such
industrial bores. On the other side, Guilal and Darbouche (2018) dismissed this claim and
added the fact that the indeed there is no legal remedy if an individual or neighbour is

deprived of their right to water and this means water could be required for the domestic or
food purpose.
Furthermore, Beckensall (2012) mentioned the fact that as changes in the climate is
already resulting in warmer weather which results in increased evaporation as well as more
likelihood or drier period. This is a significant concern which has astonished as the scenario
requires an urgent attention from all parties living in the society. Another fact in this context,
I observed that despite the claim, virtually there is no amount of information is available on
the impact of reduced water in groundwater as well as streams on local flora and fauna.
Another significant insight gained from the workshop is about managing the situation
at Gold Cost City during the attack of Cyclone. Although, it is certain that Gold Cost City
tend to work to keep its community safe during weather events and disaster, I personally
believe that there should be a continuous awareness to take care of the environmental
activities. Kotamrazu (2014) performed a study and mentioned the fact that GCC has a
dedicated recovery team in place for all sort of restoration work and for this people should
work hard to repair any sort of damaged infrastructure as well as society as a whole should
plan to provide the most of the work.
Workshop 2 contributed to the development of my knowledge with respect to the
awareness programs about GCC. Chazdon (2014) added the fact that ex-tropical Cyclone
Debbie passed over the Gold Coast in March 2017 and it has bought 870 millimetres of rain
within 30 hours and this incident has made me surprise because we visited the land, we have
found that there was no rescue department and in fact the NGO working for the community
did not show much concerns about the safety. After , the observation of the incident I have
realised the fact that it is highly necessary for the government of the regions or the country as

a whole to develop as safety and security initiatives which could further help to identify and
monitor the situation on a frequent basis.
When working with the group of individual I have realised that region authority at the
GCC should develop a damaged infrastructure which should help to sustain damage to over
100 pieces of infrastructure with the inclusion of roads, bridges, revetment walls, fire trails,
causeways. As the integrated effort, each organization should together to regularly clear more
than 50 landslip. During the observation of the work in the workshops, I have understood that
it is important to develop a coastal management program which could help to ensure the
coastline protected from storm-water.
When it comes to the relocation of the hospital in the Tweed area, it is highly
important that organizations along with the stakeholders. Hence, Bourne (2016) mentioned
that stakeholders of a hospital should include a broad area of the organization such as
shareholders, investors, owners of the hospital, government and other relevant parties should
be involved when it comes to relocating or building a new hospital. Before implementing
any such unanimous program, the organization needs to develop a stakeholder management
program. According to Bal et al. (2013), stakeholder management could include that
technique of identifying people, groups, organization that could affect or be affected by the
project, to analyse stakeholder expectation and their influence on the project. On the other
side, Mok, Shen and Yang (2015) mentioned that organizations should develop appropriate
strategies and tactics for appropriately involving stakeholders in a manner that stakeholders’
interest and involvement in the project should be visible.
Thaler and Levin-Keite (2016) mentioned that when it comes to stakeholder
management for a particular interest, there could be several views and other aspects. When
considering the change management, some individual might assume that organizations are

actually well integrated entities within which every individual tends to work harmoniously,
while some might believe that organizational decisions are made quite logically and
rationally that individual could share similar views of the world around them and they might
act to promote interest of the organizations as whole. On the basis of the view point it can be
mentioned that power and politics are two major aspects often visible during the stakeholder
management for renovating or rebuilding the hospital. So, when the group of stakeholders
which might build a coalition is the government and the investors. Thus is because these two
parties are the major investors and planners of the project. Interest of other stakeholder sin
this context is again taken care of these two parties- government and the investors. Hence to
the coalition would be for the purpose of the gaining success from the project. On the other
side, some private organizations who often fund for the development of hospital as their
corporate social responsibility can also be a significant stakeholders. Such stakeholders often
have a relation with the government. I studied in an article performed by Crawford (2014),
where the authors have mentioned the fact that political party plays a significant role when it
comes to development of a large social project. For example, I can state that if an overseas
organization is supposed to run its operation in an international market, it has to comply with
the terms of government and the government of the nation is again backed by ruling political
party.
When working with people at the workshop, my learning did not stop at above three
incidents as I have learnt one most important aspect of working in a group. I understood how
skills and effectiveness of an individual understanding the capabilities they are required next
to enhance their performance. In an article I have studied that a maturity mode is more a tool
which helps to evaluate the current skills and effective of a person and this maturity model is
often structured as the series of levels of effectiveness (Crawford 2014). It is consider that
any individual in the field could pass through the levels of the as they gain more capacities. I

have also learnt the fact that working with or implementation of a maturity model usually
begins with the evaluation and determination which further level the subject is presently
performing.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I must mention the fact that both workshop 1 and workshop 2
contributed to the development of my knowledge regarding different real world facts. I have
learnt the fact about stakeholder engagement in a real- world project. I have gained
experience about how external parties such as private agencies and government can make
political collaboration for the development of social project. I have gained a clear insight
about the maturity model helping individual to transfer new skills to other individuals.
