SUPPLY CHAIN OF STARBUCKS
Starbucks is an American company that purchases and roast high quality of coffee beans
to produce the greatest quality of coffee. They have the vision of commitment to the best quality
of coffee in the world as well as maintain the business properly by engaging with the customers
in the best possible way. It got its name from Herman Melville’s novel “Moby Dick” and its
present chairman and executive officer is Howard Schultz.
Starbucks in order to maintain its quality has an effective supply chain management. The
distribution channels that it uses for its services and products is through a retail system that is
direct in the stores owned by the company. The company also trades its foodstuffs to the
supermarkets and the shopping centers. Among its multiple delivery channels, the airlines, hotels
and the office coffee suppliers are also present. It thus has a greater control over the market with
the help of these distribution channels (Geereddy, 2013).
In order to be environmentally sustainable, the company is facing a number of challenges
relating to the environmental concerns. Starbucks has its biggest challenge of recycling the cups.
It is trying to develop more environmentally friendly cups and are aimed at reducing wastes.
Also they want to consume less energy and minimize the energy consumption in the stores.
According to DuBois, Astakhova & DuBois (2013), the company also is aimed at reducing the
use of water so that the natural resources are not misused. They are also struggling to make the
buildings green with the use of energy efficient designs in order to reduce the environmental
footprint.
