Introduction
Work-related stress refers to the presence of the misfit between the needs and capabilities of the
worker and the demands of the organization. There is a presence of increased risk of the
occurrence of work related stress among young people of the age group 18-35 years. The main
reason behind the management of work related stress in the company is that it affects the
performance and productivity of the employees in the organization (Bliese, Edwards and
Sonnentag, 2017). This report emphasizes on the concept of work related stress and its
management along with the theory related to it. It emphasizes on the person environment fit
theory and its application in the management of job related stress in Starbucks.

Company overview
The company Starbucks was found in 1971 in America. Starbucks has a wide range of
coffeehouses across the world and dedicated to satisfy its employees to improve customer
satisfaction level. In order to improve the employee efficiency, the company is providing them a
stress-free working environment and having proper attention on customer needs from the
company. In this concern, company is implementing different innovations in its products and
services with improving employee satisfaction at the workplace.
Work Related Stress and its management
Work related stress is a condition when a person experience pressure at the workplace either
mentally or physically due to their inability to meet the requirements and demands of the job. For
the purpose of the management of the work related stress, companies are adopting different
measures and strategies to reduce the level of stress among the employees such as provision of
monetary and non – monetary rewards, organizing trips, provision of recognition, conducting
seminars, conferences and training sessions to upgrade the skills and abilities of the employees in
the organization (Lloyd, Bond and Flaxman, 2017).
Person-Environment Fit Theory
This theory reflects that there is a need to align the goals of the organization with the skills and
abilities of its employees. This facilitates in the prevention of the occurrence of work related
stress among employees in the organization. This is the broad area and emphasizes on three
aspects i.e. person-organization fit, person-person fit and person-group fit. Companies can

activities and providing opportunities to employees to participate in it (Pee and Min, 2017). As
per this theory, an organization can attain rapid growth by making happy and free from stress at
the workplace. This helps in increasing the motivation level of employees and reduces the level
of stress faced by them in the organization. These strategies help employees to work in a
cohesive manner with other employees in order to attain the objectives of the team and the
organization. It is easy for Starbucks as it is engaged in a comprehensive effort to change the
working environment and achieve the goals and objectives in most desired manner. It is also a
requirement of the company to communicate the information related to the goal of the business
to the employees in a clear manner and assign tasks as per the capabilities of the employees.
Application of Person-Environment fit theory in Starbucks International
Starbucks is emphasizing on the achievement and maintenance of the person –environment fit in
the organization by the way of providing training to the employees in order to develop new skills
and abilities which helps in meeting the changing needs of the business environment. Besides
this, there is an organization of seminars, interactive sessions, and conferences in order to
educate employees regarding combating different health related issues and the techniques that
can be adopted to reduce the level of work related stress. In order to generate new energy among
the employees, different sessions related to yoga and meditation is also organized at the regular
intervals (Ryu, 2017). Besides this, regular outdoor trips have also been organized for the group
of people and individuals that helps in encouraging employees to work with enthusiasm and zeal.

Reflection
This group activity has helped in gaining the information regarding the prevalence of work
related stress among the employees that result in hampering of their performance and
productivity in a significant manner. Apart from this, participation in the group activity also
helps in gaining information related to the current scenario of food and beverages industry with a
special emphasis on Starbucks. In addition to this, it also helps in improving my researching
skills as there is a need to gain information related to the research topic in order to attain the goal
of the group activity.
I have made the contribution in the group activity by applying the theory of person-environment
fit in Starbucks to manage work related stress in an effective manner. Along with this, there are
different skills which have been improved by participating in this group activity such as
presentation skills, communication skills, and conflict management skills. I have also learnt that
for the purpose of completing the project in hand, there is a requirement of carrying out meetings
with the group members on a regular basis and share information and knowledge with each other
which helps in solving the problems faced by the group members.
Conclusion
It can be concluded that Starbucks has implemented different strategies by which the employees
can easily cope up with the stress caused to them due to their work responsibilities which include
training, meditation and yoga sessions, workshops, trips and so on. It can also be concluded that
it helps in improving the performance and efficiency of the workers and encourage them to carry
out work with more commitment and loyalty towards the organization.
