which I cannot afford to do. To ensure that both activities go smoothly, proper time management
has been vital.

to achieve all my targets in any given day, I have conducted an analysis of time spent on the
most important activities and gotten rid of unimportant activities that were eating into my time to
create time for enough rest, sleep, and doing my hobbies.
Prioritization of activities is another skill that is very important in everyone’s life. It enables
people to have an analytical awareness of the different activities that need to be carried out and
decide which is the most urgent (Zenger & Folkman 2014). This skill has enabled me to be able
to meet my deadlines in various tasks such as assignments. It has also enabled me not to forget

enough time to deal with the challenging activities first.
The ability to have effective communication skills is vital to everyone’s life. This is because
communication, both verbal and nonverbal, is the means people use to inform other people what

through this process, individuals carrying out business activities are able to interact with different
stakeholders in their businesses. These stakeholders may vary from customers, suppliers,

communicators are also confident and they are able to achieve their objectives in a more efficient
manner than people with poor skills of communication.
Having the ability to work hard and have dedication in all activities is another skill that is very
important. This requires sacrifice to get the job done in a proper manner. People who have a goal
of progressing in their careers and moving up the corporate ladder, need to be committed to their
work and work harder than everyone else. It is important to note that hard work goes hand in
hand with productivity (Gates 2010). Working hard but not achieving various set goals will not
yield any returns. Incidentally, I always work hard both in my studies as well as in my job. Hard
work and dedication involves assisting people who may need help in their tasks.
Another very vital personal skill is stress management. People who work hard but are not able to
manage their stress levels are highly likely to get diseases such as high blood pressure. Stress can
result from exhaustion or lack of skills to solve a given complex problem which requires
consultation with different people. People need to find ways that work for them which they can
employ to reduce their stress levels and to control their emotions during these times (Carter
2012). Whenever I feel stressed because I do not understand how to carry out a specific activity,
I ask for help from people more knowledgeable than I am. Moreover, physical exercise is one
method I use to manage my stress levels after having a busy day at work or studying using
activities such as jogging.
Finally, interpersonal skills are significant because they enable one to interact with other people.
Human beings are social beings and as such, they need to relate with other people. Activities that
involve team work require people to possess interpersonal skills to enable them to interact with
different people some who they may not know (Zenger & Folkman 2014).

of learners. These include the visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learners.
The auditory learners are the people who prefer having someone explain things to them instead
of reading them. One common study method they use is having music playing in the background
as they recite information. Other than background music, they may find other noises to be a
distraction (Flores & Ed 2016).
Visual learners on the other hand find the best learning style to involve reading, the use of
graphics or looking at a demonstration. They find it easier to look at graphs and charts but could
be easily distracted when listening to explanations (Felder & Celanese 2015).
Kinesthetic learners are able to understand information best using an approach that is hand on.
This involves actually carrying out an activity in the learning process. They also find it easier to
learn as they write things down (Felder & Celanese 2015).
opposed to dealing with people. They like synthesizing data and logically analyzing information
(Flores & Ed 2016).
The final learning style in this model is the accommodator style. This style involves feeling and
doing. It is where people learn by performing activities. People who learn in this manner like to
take risks and carry out experiments. They are also open-minded and adaptable. They like
dealing with other people. Their most benefits come from situations that are structured and
require to be changed. They enjoy learning from other people and possess great lab skills (Felder
& Celanese 2015).

Evaluation of Personal Skills Required in the Achievement of Strategic Goals 13
The Myer Briggs Test is used to assess different personality types. It involves a questionnaire
which upon filling enables one to know their personality type. This personality test is based on
the Theory of Psychological Types by Carl Jung. There are four dimensions that are indicated
after using this test (Felder 2011).
First, it finds out where one focusses their attention. It depicts people as either introverts (I) or
extroverts (E). Secondly, it finds out how people take in information. this shows two ways
namely. Intuition (N) or sensing (S). Third, it finds out how one makes decisions as either by
thinking about a situation (T) or having a feeling about it (F). Finally, it finds out how one deals
with the world. In this regard it shows either by perception (P) or by judging (J). A
comprehension of one’s personality type enables the individual to have a better understanding of
themselves and their interactions with other people (Chick 2017).
Honey and Mumford developed a questionnaire to probe into people’s behaviors. By learning
their behavioral tendencies, people are able to know what their learning preferences and styles
are and become effective learners. The four learning styles in this model include; reflectors,
theorists, pragmatists, and activists (Felder 2011).
Relectors are the people who learn by watching activities as they happen and then contemplating
about them. They do not like to join into the activities but instead they prefer to see the
encounters with different view-points, gather the information and then work to make a suitable
conclusion. These individuals like self-analysis questionnaires, feedback, interview, paired
discussions and coaching (Chick 2017).
Theorists like to understand the hypothesis in different activities. They use models with a certain
end goal in learning. They like to bring in new data into a specific hypothesis. Their activities of

Activists learn by carrying out activities that are practical. Their activities in the learning process
involve puzzles, group discussions, competitions, and brainstorming. Finally, the pragmatists are
people with the ability to perceive how to apply their learned information into their present
reality. Their best learning activities involve case studies, discussions and problem solving
(Flores & Ed 2016).
3.1 Personal Development Plan
A personal development plan is important because it provides a structured approach for
individuals to be aware of what they need to learn and how they can plan on learning it
(Grainger, 2014). It requires the people to set life and career objectives and identify the support
as well as the resources required in achieving these objectives. Moreover, they need to identify
the obstacles that they may encounter while trying to achieve the set goals and find ways to
overcome these challenges. They need to review these plans and constantly monitor them to
evaluate if they are sticking to the set goals and correct any deviations (Baume & Fseda 2011).
Monitoring and evaluation of the development plans is vital to aid in managing the development
process. It assists in the evaluation of the progress of the process. The monitoring of the
development plan makes people to become learners who are self-directed and critical. It also
assists them to gain a clear understanding of their strengths as well as areas that may need further
development such as in leadership skills. The development plan enables people to review their
skills regularly and compare how much they have achieved against the objectives that they had
set initially (of Academic Planning & Amherst 2012).

Evaluation of Personal Skills Required in the Achievement of Strategic Goals 15
My personal development plan intended to meet requirements of leadership development is
shown below.
My plan is in three stages. The first stage involves a personal analysis of the leadership skills that
I already possess. This involves an identification if my strengths and weaknesses in relation to
leadership skills. This requires me to draw from the skills that I identified in the previous
question. Moreover, there is a need to identify perceived opportunities derived from my
experiences as well as an identification of threats to my success as a leader.
The second stage involves setting of goals. This step requires me to set leadership goals that are
clearly defined and measurable.
The third stage involves setting out of personal leadership objectives.
Step 1; analysis of leadership skills
Strengths Areas that require further development
My main strength is that am very confident
and good at communicating. This enables me
to give clear directions.
I am also able to work well under pressure
and deliver good results.
My delegation skills are also high and am a
good judge of character which enables me to
know which people can be relied upon and
those who need to be pushed to produce good
results.
It has been quite challenging to maintain a
balance between my work life and my
learning life. As a result, sometimes I am
usually running from one place to the next as
I try to balance.
There is a need for me to plan for different
activities in a proper manner. By so doing, I
will be able to inform my subordinates
exactly what is expected of them.

professional growth. It assists them in the process of identifying their challenges in ways that are

practical and it also assists in problem handling as they move to higher levels of development
(Eisele et al., 2013).
One has to first recognize that they need to change and grow before they create a development
plan. This ensures that the people have the motivation needed in growing their skills in
accordance to their work objectives. People then need to explore issues that are contextual. This
involves the assessment of the situation as it currently is. Once the personal development plan is
properly created, individuals need to execute the different activities as planned and monitor the
progress in relation to the objectives (Baume & Fseda 2011).
One way to assess how well they are progressing in their development is to use a mentor. This
decision is very significant and requires discernment. There is a need for the existence of rapport
between the individual and the mentor. Due to the difference that exists between the mentor and
the mentee in both power and experience, the mentor is able to identify weaknesses in the
mentee and provide solutions on how these challenges can be solved. Mentors need to be people
who have emotional management skills, value other people and can be able to bring in skills of
self-management in their mentees (Horak, 2009).
Another way to evaluate how well one has benefited from a personal development plan is an
appraisal of the skills. This may be through psychometric tests and aptitude tests. This may be
carried out by human resource personnel in organizations to see how good one’s leadership skills
are and receive feedback on areas to improve on (Ellyatt, 2009).
Moreover, one can use a written diary to evaluate the effectiveness of the personal development
plan. This will explain the activities that have already been undertaken during a given period of
practical and it also assists in problem handling as they move to higher levels of development

time. This helps one to observe the activities that have been undertaken and this that have not

It’s also important to listen to a work based assessor. These are people who assess the progress of
the skills gained from the development plan at different stages. They then give feedback on what
has been achieved and what should be improved on (Richmond College 2013).
3.3 Impact of own learning in achieving strategic goals
The task of taking responsibility in educating one-self about your individual learning style
enables one to be able to achieve their set goals in the most effective manner. Learning
continually is very vital in the achievement of strategic goals. Whenever people become active
participants in the learning process, they become empowered and gain the motivation to achieve
their total potential (Ministry of Education and Research 2014).
Past research has shown that people who set their strategic goals and make a plan on how to
learn and achieve them tend to be more successful than those who don’t take charge of their own
learning. People who have identified their own style of learning also have great confidence to
take on tasks that are challenging, without considering their abilities. Because they are highly
motivated to perform these tasks and keep on improving, failure does not deter them and their
self-esteem continues to be strong (Meyer et al. 2008).
Moreover, when people are aware of how they learn best, they are able to delve into their
processes of thinking. In turn, they are able to think of how effective their strategies enabled
them to achieve the goals they had set. Consequently, this gives people control over their skills to
know what they need to improve on to achieve their goals (Management Institute 2016).
