3STRATEGIC PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Background of the company
Samsung C & T Corporation has been involved in much diverse activity within the
framework of sustainable management for the effort to implement a impact which would be
positive on the society and environment. The company thrives in creating new opportunity
with regards to high value added business prospective. This is done mainly done by the
development for energy efficient management technique (Bowman 2016). The company was
founded in the year 1938 as a parent company of Samsung group. The company has
pioneered the international sales nations and trading business since it was registered as the
general first trading company in Korea in 1975. The company patched up with Samsung
constructions in 1995 and since the patching up the company have started two distinctive
businesses: construction group and trading, engineering and investment group. The company
is quickly becoming the global top tier company generating and economic value of which is
outstanding throughout the year. This is mainly done on the basis of advanced technology
and skilled expert within the business unit of the organisation (Inhorn 2017).
Project Case
In the report the case which is selected is the Burj Khalifa. The project is developed in
the city of Dubai is considered as the Global icon by the council on the tall building and
Urban habitat. Burj khalifa honours the city with its extraordinary aspect of art, meticulous
craftsman and engineering. The tower was considered as the world’s largest man made
structure just after 1325 days after excavation work stated on 2004 of January. The
composition of the project consists of 330000 cubic centimetre of concrete; 39000 tonnes of
steel reinforcement; 103000 square meter of glass and 15500 square meters of embossed
stainless steel (Kijewski-Correa et al. 2016).

Standard Criteria
The prime contractor in order to construct the tower used the latest advancement in
order to complete the construction process. There are three primary tower cranes which were
located directly adjacent to the centre core, each of the structure continued at various heights
as required in the process (Acuto 2016). The key aspect of construction in order to speed up
the process was that to minimize the time allocated to these cranes. In order to implement the
process automated self climbing work was employed in order to construct the walls and blade
parameter columns. The final design of the structure can be considered as an appropriate
response to its many influences. On the other hand the construction and the design of burj
khalifa give a direct opportunity to conduct an investigation on the further refinement of the
super tall business design (Bowman 2016).
Success rate or Failure rate
The burj khalifa is considered as stated above as the world’s largest building a
excellence of soaring steel and glass which is nearly double the size of Chicago Willis tower.
It was build with the intention of proponent hope of the grandeur of Burj Khalifa. Taking into
account the prestigious aspect of the building, the mammoth structure will affect the overall
regions long term economy in various ways. It’s mainly a PR boost for sure. But putting
limelight on the aspect of neighbour revitalization the Dubai’s economy and the real estate
problem are even bigger. Certainly from the height of 2716 feet, things are currently covered
with bleak in Dubai real estate scenario.
There is an overrun of the project of the Burj Khalifa, the overall projects value is
almost decreased a lot comparing to initial plan and cost which was estimated. The overall
cost is linked wirth the aspect of time. The original duration of the project was set for a time
period of forty-seven months which was excluding the excavation time. The project was

completed a month later. The overall change in the design of the project not only altered the
overall design of the project but also the overall cost as well as the duration of the project
undertaken. Taking into account the change in design it altered the work scenario and extra
effort was involved in the aspect. On the other hand the Dubai’s deteriorating economic
mainly was a crucial factor in the delay of the project (Russo et al. 2016). This incident was
termed as “Dubai shock” and was mainly caused by the bubble in the real estate investment
scenario (Abdelrazaq 2016).
It is possible to use quality which is a critical aspect of success or failure with regards
to the project. (Bloch 2016) stated that the factor which can be considered as the most
significant is the role of the project manager competence in the aspect of the project. The
main c9onstructor in the project the Samsung engineering with the different criteria of the
project introduced a new technology which was mainly based on the previous experience of
the construction of tall building. During the process of the implementation of the new
technology simultaneous testing was also performed in order to detect the faults in the
construction. Since after the competition of the project if faults were identified it would
directly increase the cost factor of the project. The main factor of the delay in the project was
due to the factor of change in the I Exterior and exterior of the project and the overall design
of the project and the cost related economic factor which is considered as a vital aspect in any
form of project configuration (Bowman 2016).
Critical identification and justification
The primary concern in the field of engineering in this case is the affect of the wind
on the building structure. The main form of the Burj khalifa is mainly the result of engineers
and the architects in order to vary the shape of the building with the height factor. This

resulted in the overall minimizing of the wind forces which is applied on the building keeping
in mind not be alter the overall shape (Bloch 2016).
The floor plan of the building consists of a y- shaped plan and tri angle based angel
concept. The structure is mainly constructed mainly with the approach of connecting three
separate wings which are connected to the centre of the core. The main concept in this
scenario is that when the tower raises in height one wing of the tower sets back in the order of
a sparring pattern. The overall concept that can be resulted from the approach that 24
different floor primary plates this can be included with some less variation (Shidlovskaya,
and Briaud 2016).
Critical analysis
The Burj Khalifa is ranked number one with regards to all the top criteria for building
according to the tall buildings and urban habitat (CTBUH). The CTBUH ranks the building
on many aspects which include “height to height occupied floor” ,” height to tip” and many
more.
Height to architecture top:
Burj khalifa : 282 meters (2717 ft)
Taipei : 508 meters (1667 ft)
Shanghai world financial centre, China: 492 meter (1641 ft)
Petronas tower, Malaysia: 452 meters (1489 ft)( Barkham et al. 2017)
Height to highest occupied floor:
Burj khalifa : 535 meters (1918 ft)
Taipei : 438 meters (1437 ft)
Shanghai world financial centre, China: 508 meter (1555 ft)

Petronas tower, Malaysia: 452 meters (1489 ft)( Alnagga et al. 2016)
Height to tip
Burj khalifa : 828 meters (27116.5 ft)
Taipei : 508 meters (1667 ft)
Shanghai world financial centre, China: 494 meter (1622 ft)
Petronas tower, Malaysia: 452 meters (1489 ft) (Mtapuri and Giampiccoli 2017).
Burj khalifa hold the following record:
Tallest building in the world: overstepping the Taipei 101 which is in Taiwan which is
508 meters, which is the record of the tallest building title since it has opened its door
in 2004.
Tallest man made structure in the world: surprisingly the KVLY –TV mast which is in
North Dakota in USA which stands at a height of 628.8 meters.
Largest number of stores in the world: 200 plus with almost 160 habitable stories in it.
Highest observation desk in the world: level 160.
World record for the vertical concrete pumping: 605 meters, beating the previous
record (448 meters or 1407 ft).
Conclusion
The main structural and the form of the building are the result of close collaboration
among all the active members of the design time. The tower is a model of efficiency in the
field of wind behaviour, structural efficiency and construction. The different aspect which
can be matched with the aspect is innovation, and success that have merely changed the
overall prospective of how a tall building can be designed and constructed. This will pave the
way for the generation next to come of super tall building. This can directly boost up with the

innovations ideas and building prospective with the implementation in this field. There are
different options with the aspect of whether the project can be considered as a success or a
failure. It can be stated that it’s very much early to decide upon the factor of success or
failure. But if the consideration is taken on the account of the whole project it can be
concluded that it was a huge success because it attracted people from around the globe with
its charm and innovations (Tang et al. 2016). The impact of the project on the society can
also be considered very much useful. It can be concluded from the report that the tower had
somewhat reached the expectation. Firstly with the tower new investments were made in
Dubai which could increase the overall befit of the community and secondly the project
started a new revolution in the field of construction with new technological innovations
which was started to implement with the Burj Khalifa concepts. The key aspect of
construction in order to speed up the process was that to minimize the time allocated to these
cranes. In order to implement the process automated self climbing work was employed in
order to construct the walls and blade parameter columns. The final design of the structure
can be considered as an appropriate response to its many influences. On the other hand the
construction and the design of Burj Khalifa give a direct opportunity to conduct an
investigation on the further refinement of the super tall business design (Bowman 2016).
Recommendations
Recommendation 1: The overall project did not finally meet the main objective in terms of
time and cost factor. To be very much precious the project did not meet the expectation of the
shareholder. Due the above mentioned factor the overall design of the project was altered. It
was stated that although if the overall design and the concept of the project was right if it did
not match the overall concept and the expectation which it directly involve in the loss of
profit with regards to the project. Thus a full planning of the overall project was

9STRATEGIC PROJECT MANAGEMENT
recommended because repetitive change in the planning would affect the projects final
outcome.
Recommendation 2: It can be stated the increase of the duration of the project would affect
the economy factor. There was a serious economic deformation in the field of Dubai in the
year 2008. In this scenario about Burj Khalifa it was possible to estimate the downturn with
regards to the economy. However the scaling of the project was the m ain priority. Putting
emphasis of this point it can be stated that considering the external situation increase with the
cost related factor can be pointed out. Theirs is no specific reason of the making the building
size so high. a much more pragmatic and to some extent a affordable decision should have
been taken into consideration.
Recommendation 3: The Burj Khalifa in its own way to maintain the the list of the world’s
tallest building need to emphasise that the aspect of further investment can be a main point to
make the Burj Khalifa town a citizen leisure, communal and relaxation space. With regards to
the common people if they do not have the access of the place then would be only set up for
the people who have money to invest on it. If the people would not have the access the Burj
Khalifa would turn out to be a huge building but without any links to the community and the
citizenry.
