MAIN BODY
Impact of firm over the environment
The key impact of the business operation of Luxottica Group on the environment are
stated below.
The energy consumption from non-renewable sources of energy is the major factor to
be considered. The total consumption of non-renewable sources of energy by the
company in 2018 is 383.7 million kWh and renewable sources of energy is 5.4 million
kWh (De Villiers & Maroun, 2017). This energy consumption is having a major
impact on the environment which is sued in the manufacturing facilities of the
company in Italy, china, Brazil and US.
The increase in the carbon emission by the manufacturing facility and logistics hubs
of the company has caused a major impact on the environment (Niesten and et.al,
2017). It came out to be 160,872 tons in the year 2018 which shows an increase of 5%
in comparison to previous year but the direct emission has dropped by 1%.
There has been an increase in the total amount of waste generated by Luxottica Group
activities, that is, an increase of 13.8% from the previous year. This is mainly because
of the non-hazardous waste identified in the Luxottica’s facilities in Dongguan.

priority list and is working with numerous local suppliers. This has helped in
maintaining a proper relation with its suppliers.
In 2018, the economic value generated by the company came to around 8947.2
million out of which 7988.6 million has been distributed to its stakeholders both
internal and external and the remaining amount has been retained for its growth and
development (Non-financial statement. 2018). This contribution signifies the its
concern for the well being of its employees and the economic and social progress of
the community.
Despite the positive impact it has over the society, there is one thing that is negatively
affecting the society which is the safety level in the organization. In 2018, the
accident rates have increased in comparison other previous year which is mostly on
account of collisions and falls. The number of accidents increased to 32,567 in 2018
from 27,190 in 2017. This incident has a huge impact on the value chain of the
business as well.
Organization’s current sustainability objectives and performance indicators
The current sustainability objective of the Luxottica Group is “To see the beauty of
life”. The company has always considered it as a part of its DNA and the business.
approaches. This vision can be found out on the code of ethics established by it which
outlines the principles and the values that inspired the company in doing business in an
ethical and responsible manner (Kumar & Rajan, 2017). The environment is the most
important factor in Luxottica’s vision of sustainability. The company has made long term
commitment and is working on it but at the slow pace as it can eb seen that the company is
using more non-renewable sources of energy and is releasing large amount of CO2 gases in
the surroundings. The company has made huge investment for the well-being of the
environment. This has resulted into reduction in electricity consumption in China and Italy.
The Luxottica Group is effective in taking care of its stakeholders by providing them equal
opportunity for growth and also distributing the profits of the company among them. But in
contrast, the company is not able to implement safety culture in its organization which has led
to number of accidents.

performance.

industry with respect to processes and systems used by it and its implication or its
performance.

sustainability management with the objective of making the life better. the key environmental
effect caused by the organization in terms of carbon emission, waste management, energy
consumption has been evaluated and also the impact it has over the society which includes its
stakeholders. The critical evaluation of the company’s sustainability objective and the current
performance indicator reveals that the in some way company is moving towards sustainability
but on a slow pace. Thus, it can be said that the aim and objective of the report is achieved.

reducing the energy consumption which will result into reduction in the energy cost.
