Summary
The following presentation is an account of the various strategies and interventions taken for
the treatment of patients undergoing Ostomy. The most important professional is a stoma care
nurse. Various physiological problems leading to stoma in patients especially after surgery is
inflammatory bowel disease, birth defects, incontinence, pelvic trauma. The main role of the
nurse is maintaining the balance between the mental and psychological state of the patient
providing effective means for treatment. There are specific functions of the nurses during the
preoperative, perioperative and the post-operative stages. Thus the most important roles are
inclusive of local referral policies, prevention of breach of confidentiality, giving the patient
information about the medical history of the patients and discussion of an effective plan of
care for the patients which are also some of the additional roles of the stoma care nurse.
Specific interventions should be followed for the care and management of wounds,
management of issues regarding sepsis of the patient and specific interventions for pain
management including maintenance of proper dose of medications. Moreover, proper
awareness and needs for education of the nurse is needed for the effectiveness of treatment
including maintainance of a holistic approach and a proper patient centered care approach for
the patient. Moreover, adequate education is required for maintenance of Ostomy care and up
to date interventions. Thus the need for effective management among stoma care nurses along
with the decisions made by a multidisciplinary team is required for providing care and
support for the patient for effective treatment.
