Introduction
The work practice theory in which emphasis is laid on individuals self determination
along with strength is referred to as strength based approach. This is liable for building up clients
with respect to strengths by looking at them as resourceful as well as resilient even when they are
in adverse situation (Franck and O'Brien, 2019). Basically, this implies social work theory
practice in which emphasis is laid on strengths and self-determination. This report is based on a
case study of Finona who have some health issues and family is also unaware of that as they do
not have adequate finance to deal with it. This report comprises of strength based approach along
with ways in which assistance can be provided for well being of family. Furthermore, the key
issues that are being faced by different entities and risk factors which can have adverse impact on
well being will be furnished on the basis of case study. In addition to this, significance of
effectual communication will also be illustrated.
Overview of Case Study
Finona is 6 year child whose father is currently incarcerated and due to this her mother
(Sophie) went into depression. Along with this, she got addicted to drugs as well as alcohol and
she was all into it. Finona have some health issues, she was growing physically but not mentally
and her family did not have adequate finance to provide her adequate care. One day Finona went
out and was found social care workers not in a good condition. They took her to hospital and
found that she had autism spectrum disorder. Then they tried to reach her parents and identified
that her father was imprisoned as well as mother was in depression due to the physical violence
that take place in their home.
Strength based approach
The collaborative process that takes place among individuals and is being supported by services
as well as those who are supporting these aspects allowing working together for identification
outcome and having affirmative assets along with strengths is defined as strength based
approach. It is dependent on quality of relationship which prevails among those who are
rendering services and those who are being supported by them along with these individuals who
are looking for support are brought into the process (Goldsworthy and et. al, 2019). When work
is being carried out in collaborative manner then it promotes opportunity to be co-producers of
their services and support instead of solely customers. An instance can be taken into
consideration with respect to case study like Sophie has gone into depression but when nurse is

trying to help her then it is necessary that they respond to this aspect in an adequate manner. This
will aid them to have impelling results as well as it can be attained in reduced time frame
(Zeanah, 2018). But if Sophie do not respond to treatment or do not follow guidelines then it will
take time for her recovery or there is also a possibility that she do not respond.
It is a clinical approach which is highly resonant with respect to their patients as well as
family theories associated with resiliency along with this it provides a family centred care. This
is mutually beneficial partnership which will prevail in between providers like nurse, social care
worker or health professional (Hans and White, 2019). As Finona have autism spectrum disorder
and strength based approach furnish adequate adolescents that have some brain issues like
growth of brain. Social workers will note the condition of family and will also take significant
measures through which these conditions can be handled in an affirmative manner. But along
with this both positives and negatives are being taken into consideration so that relevant solution
can be attained for dealing with their health perspectives.

With respect to Finona some major family conditions have been specified below:
 Autism spectrum disorder: The condition that is related with development of brain in
which it is being perceived as well as socialise among other that leads to problems related
with communication and interaction. This aspect was identified when social care workers
took Finona to hospital in adverse condition. The patient was found alone in road. What
if something wrong had happened with her like rape, accident, kidnapping or anything
else.
 Depression: This is the other crucial aspect which was found by social care workers
while they tried to identify the family of Finona. But it was identified that mother of
patient was addicted to alcohol and was in depression. The condition was bad but not
worse so there was a response.
 Father in prison: The other aspect is that physical violence takes place in between father
and mother due which later was in incarcerated. Along with this, father was also into

alcohol and beats wife for having money to buy it. Due to this Sophie also went into
depression started drugs and alcohol.
These are worst conditions in which Finona is living so the probability of her recovery is
declined. Father in prison and mother is in a condition where they can’t take care of themselves
then it can be assured that child will have adequate environment. With respect to conditions
specified above, some risks have been illustrated below:
 The initial is who will take care of a child who has not grown up mentally and the
situations that prevail at home will also have pessimistic impact on health of Finona.
 Situation which has occurred like child went to road all alone as no one was seeing what
if such things happen again. Finona may even loose life or anything can be happen with
her which can be even worse than loosing life.
 Sophie is in depression and father is in prison both are into drugs and alcohol what will
be condition if father comes back. Probability is high that situation will worsen.
 Who will bear the financial expenses for treating the family as all the three members are
in need of significant help. For an instance family who did not had money for taking their
child to doctor for check up then it is not possible for them to deal with her treatment
(Manning, Hemingway and Redsell, 2018). There has been lots of innovation within
medical science there might be a possibility that Finona may be assisted early and might
have recovered.
These are the major risks that have been justified clearly by making use of example but
must be taken into consideration so that child who have not even seen the world can have better
place to live and have relevant care from close ones.
Health promotion and communication with respect to case
The above section clearly indicates family conditions along with risks which prevail. It
becomes necessary to provide a child with environ which they deserve. This also involves
adequate health as environment will not be worth in case if adequate health standards are not
maintained or provided to a child who is mentally disabled (Mirkovic and et. al, 2018).
Basically, health promotion illustrates aggregation of learning experiences that have been
designed to assist as well as communities within improvisation of health through enhancement of
knowledge and creating an impact on attitude. Communication imply two way process for
attaining mutual understanding in which individuals will not only exchange news, feelings, ideas

All the risks can be eliminated upto some extent through health education, promotion and
communication. An example can be taken in context of case study for understanding this aspect
(Myors and et. al, 2018). As it is clear that Finona needs appropriate care but she is not having it
due to different reasons. The primary aspect is to recover mother from state of depression and
both mother as well as father from usage of drugs. Though this, might not seem simple and will
be time consuming process but assistance from health professionals will aid them to overcome
this. It is important that they are being educated like what impact there nature or conditions that
prevails within their home will be on child. For this, social care workers can furnish them with
practical and real life examples to make clear the implication of actions which are being carried
out by them. For an instance, if they will continue to do so then child will never recover if effort
is being made by them and even if best health services are provided to them by government
(Zeanah Jr and Zeanah, 2018). Along with this, they need to be told the possible impact of even
if again same condition occur, this time child was found by social care workers but each time this
will not be possible. They needs to be educated in terms of importance of health like if person is
not healthy then how they will be able to earn in an adequate manner.
Health is critical aspect if person is not healthy it will bring in frustration and irritation
due to which results are clear physical violence and the maximum impact is on health of their
child no one else (Soares and et. al, 2018). All these aspects must be taught to parents of Finona
as it might help them to control their actions. It is clear that due to child they both can’t work but
if one is making relevant savings instead of spending that amount on liquor then there financial
conditions will also be improvised. This is all being carried out by making use of communication
as it is a way through which thought of individuals are being exchanged and their point of view
can be understood. It can also be altered through giving practical evidences. This will lead to
create an affirmative impact on situations of family as well as Finona.
Conclusion
From above it can be concluded that, strength based approach is collaborative process
among person who is being supported via services that are liable for supporting and then aids
within working together for identification of results that will draw individual’s strengths along
with assets. In this approach, patients as well as their families will be active participants within

determination of concerns, decision making and planning for promotion and restoring health.
Health education denotes kind of education that is being formulated for public or individuals for
gaining skills, attitude, knowledge and values that are required for promoting, maintain, restoring
and improvisation of health of individuals. Health promotion depicts behavioural social science
