Introduction
The main purpose of this article is to understand the requirement of an effective intercultural
understanding by millennials or people born between 1980 and 2000. The author has tried to
examine the practices and findings of Canada’s Centre for Intercultural Learning with regard to
training in intercultural competencies in the context of a youth exchange program conducted by
the Canadian government each year.
Centre for Intercultural Learning
According to White (2010), the Centre for Intercultural Learning (CIL) of the Canadian Foreign
Service Institute provides learning services in Intercultural Effectiveness to a variety of clientele.
The primary motive of the Centre is to provide expertise in intercultural effectiveness to
individuals as well as the organization to help clients achieve their objectives in an intercultural
environment.
Intercultural Exchange between Youth
The Intercultural Exchange between Youth (IEY) was created with the mission is to develop
youngsters to actively participate in sustainable community-development projects. The exchange
program promotes non-formal education through a model in which volunteers learn by getting
involved in communities in Canada and in another country (White 2010).

The program is divided into two parts, where youngsters from Canada and another country live
and work together in a Canadian community for the first half and in the next, they move to the
partner country. The activities are designed to encourage the group to apply learning tools for

Conclusion
The combination of cultural practices and values between the Millennials can be challenging.
However, the eagerness of IEY volunteers to learn about each other’s countries and cultural
practices strongly promote intercultural co-operation. This article is a really good work on
intercultural communication, as it elaborates on the international exchange programs led by
Canada and illustrates their benefits.
