INTRODUCTION
Goal setting includes development of an action plan created to guide and encourage
people toward achieving goals. It is can be directed by goal setting rules such as SMART
criteria. It is considered as one of the most essential elements of personal development and
improvement. The current essay it based on importance of goal setting and highlights the
essential short term as well as long term goals for university students (Vroland‐Nordstrand and
et.al., 2016). This essay justified methods used by students to improve how they can remember
new information.

Importance of goal setting and its benefits
Ambitions and specific goals lead to morel performance improvement rather than general
or easy goals. It must be specific, time, constrained and difficult. Tough goals will be set ideally
at 90th percentile of activity assuming that motivation and not capability is limiting attainment of
that degree of performance. Some people in their professional or academic career perform much
better than other because they set different performance goals that help to enhance their
motivational level and encourage them to work hard to achieve it as soon as possible. To make
continuous progress, to achieve greater success and to enhance performance much better than the
other people at same place, goal setting is important (Zee and de Bree, 2017). It helps to promote
actions and provide clear direction towards goal relative actions, it supports to energize people,
challenging them to achieve and get their aims and show success more than past few months or
years. Furthermore, setting goals is crucial because it keeps students motivation up and help to
maintain their morale & stick to established time frame, culminating in prospering completion of
a set goal. Goal setting is significance because it helps to beat procrastination, it is something
people battle from time to time. When individual set specific goals in their life, particular goal
for what they want to achieve, it contributes to comprehend that procrastination is dangerous. It
wasted time and affect mental well-being, which is not good for career progress. By setting
goals, person get want they desire to obtain and it gives them taste of victory, which the want to
taste that again and again.
Long and short term goals for university students

Goals are divided into different categories, such as long term and short term goals. Long
term goals are people vision for future, it considered as targets for further performance and
outcomes (Niehaus and Wegener, 2019). Time frame of this goal category is usually one to 8
years with 6 years being the most general. Long term goals are strategic and directional and does
not overly measurable and specific. In context of university students, getting higher qualification
after passing school years from well reputed college or institute is a long term goals of students,
that make professional and personal career excellent. Individual set this goal because it helps to
pursue their career that inspires them. It provides high job satisfaction in the future, that comes
from higher income and better employment benefits. Furthermore, before completing graduation,
university students desired to get high score in each minister that help to get good employment
opportunity in the future. It defines as long term goals, which students set before graduating and
want to achieve with desired outcomes.
Short term goals-
Short term goals is equally essential as setting long term, it is an results people want to
obtain in next three to 7 months. It was easier for people to achieve short term goals and
accomplish it more than long term goals because they do not take year to achieve (Muenks and
et.al., 20178). It permits individual to focus on doing necessary things to get something specific,
allow them to see where they are headed and what people need to do to achieve goal.
Understanding specific topic and get high scores on next assignment are short term goals for
university students which they can achieve through hard work & good performance. It required a
lot of efforts and focus on learning new things that help in academic career. Students set their
short term goal because it gives clear directions to obtain long term benefits which is quite
beneficial. Along with it, complete all given assignments by a set time lines is another short term
goal for university students, that they had to achieve for getting better scores.
Techniques can use to improve how much students remember new information
Students to remember or recall new information can use different methods that help to
improve their memory. There are some techniques that they can use-
Mnemonics for memory improvement-
It is considered as memory methods that helps students to remember new things and
information better. It is most effectual for forming strong long term memories, with few common
mnemonic devices such as memory palaces (Hampstead and et.al., 2019). It is one of the best

and powerful mnemonic tool, associated pieces of data that individual wish to recall or
remembers with parts of a location that they are very familiar with, this location can be home or
class room. Memorization techniques begins when students visualize their own walking through
class and remembers every single info that they can, it is a good mental exercise. Memory places
will be used to remember languages, academic material and lists. Another method under
mnemonic devices is spaced repetition. It is easier and faster way to remembers new information
and something else that students read Toyoda than a paragraph they have read a year back.
Group discussion-
While making discussion with other people in group, students get opportunity to
remembers new information and stronger their memory rather than before (Fry, 2018). It actually
helps them to retain data or study related info because when individual see their fellow class
mates, that visual will spark memories of what those people had to say about lesson. Group
discussion boost up morale and put pressure on students to recall information which is quite
beneficial for them.
CONCLUSION
From above analysis it has been summarized that by setting goals students motivate
themselves for getting better results, it gives them a sense of purpose in life and encourage to
achieved desired things effectively. Furthermore, by setting goals people achieved their short and
long term goals according to decided time limits. Different types of methods are available for
students and other peoples that they are using to improve memory and recall information in short
period effectively which enhance their working speed and increase motivational level.
