(2014) argued that with the increasing costs of operating and enrolments as well as high
competition, universities require more financing. The points below support the arguments of
Hanson as to why University education should not be free.
According to research, the university system has become more competitive hence the
professors, students and administrators have been offered incentives to encourage them to work
harder. A public institution which is not funded experiences more competition hence universities
depend on students to generate their revenue. Tuition fees paid by the students helps to
encourage the university’s reputation through advanced research done by efficient faculty
personnel.
Also through the payments, the students are also encouraged to work hard. Germany
education is supported financially hence most undergraduates take many years to finish their
degrees and in the fee-paying systems, this is only earned in 3-4 years. As per the data from
Statistics Canada,2007, the percentage of people with low-income attending university was 12%.
A similar case was found in Geramany,1989 where only 11.5% students from poor families
attended universities. This is due to academic performance of the pupils and parenting and not
money.
Another point is that taxpayers will bear the costs of managing the university and this
will not be fair for them hence students should pay for their university education.
In conclusion, the students who attend universities are not from families with low
incomes and hence the students can afford to pay for their university education. Increased
university fees increases investments and the students experience in the university.
