Introduction
Skills are needed for gaining success in life for every individual. In education, the students must
have some skills that would help them to learn new things (Assister, 2017). In the given study,
the importance of study skills will be explained. The reasons that made the students study for a
degree in the university has been explained. A study plan will be provided that will be helpful in
developing skills.

Main Body
(1) What are the main reasons for studying a degree at university?
There are various reasons that compel the students to study a degree at the university. The major
aim is the desire of learning a particular type of study. It has been found by “Feldman” and
“Newcomb” that the new students in a university have the goal of learning vocational activities
through training (Holdaway and Kelloway, 1987). Another reason for studying at a university is
achieving general education. While in other studies, it has been found that the reason for
studying a degree in a university is the attainment of basic education. It has been found by the
“Cooperative Institutional Research Program” that the objective of the students in learning in
university has been of getting a better job after the completion of education. It has been the
objective of around 83% of students. Around 74% of students have the aim of learning new
things as per their preference in the university. Around 70% of the students have the goal of
earning money after their studies.
Even 61% of students have answered that the reason for studying a degree at university is to
gaining general education as well as to attain knowledge. It can be observed that most of the
students have the aim of getting a better job after studies. They have the view that through
education they can get the opportunity of getting a better job to make a good career in future.
Many students think that after having a degree from the university, they would be able to make
money through doing business or job. There are many students who want to learn new things
during the study at a university. They have the idea that they would be able to gain knowledge of
various things of the world through study. Some students want to study a degree at university to
get general education that would be essential for having the basic knowledge.
(2) What are the core academic skills that can be developed and why are they important?
The core academic skills needed for studying are communications skills, both oral and written
skills. The students must have good non-verbal skills that can be expressed through their body
language. Vocational skills are also necessary to improve existing skills. These skills can be
developed through training at the university. The skills listed above are essential for the students.
Through good communication skills, they would be able to ask the teacher about various

problems they find in the study. Good oral communication would enhance the interaction
between the students and teachers that would be beneficial for the students in simplifying their
task of learning. Good written skills would help the students to gain appreciation form the
teachers, as well as these skills, would help them in the long run through conveying their idea in
write form. Non-verbal skills of the students can be revealed through their behaviour and attitude
in the university. This can influence their learning and education as good behaviour would gain
them the respect of others that would be helpful in facilitating their studies. Vocational skills
would be helpful in performing the tasks of field work. Through this skill, the students will be
able to perform practical tasks.
(3) Develop a study plan that includes short term and long term goals that will help in
acquiring and developing the skills and knowledge mentioned in (2).

Conclusion
It can be concluded from the given study that there are many reasons that compel the students to
learn for a degree in the university. The students should have good communication and
vocational skills to learn new things in the institution. The development plan has been produced
to improve the skills within a specific time.
