Introduction
Higher education in university level provides learners with the opportunity to develop better
learning habits and acquire relevant skills that would benefit them in future. The ability of the
learners in acquiring relevant skills and education in institutions is based on the various methods
and techniques that are made available to them. Students seek higher education from universities
due to the growing dearth of high paying jobs. University education will help learners to acquire
skills that enhance their ability to gain better jobs and payment in their professional lives.
The following study will initially identify the primary reasons for students to apply for a degree
at university, secondly core academic skills and their importance would be stated. Finally, a
study plan would be developed for acquiring academic skills considering the long-term and
short-term goals of learners.
Main Body
1. What are the main reasons for studying a degree at university?
Students seek to attend university education in order to gain better employment opportunities in
the future. The learners seek to gain a degree from a reputed university in order to receive
appropriate training in regards to academic skills. As per the findings derived by Holdaway and
Kelloway (1987), the students attending University seek vocational training from their
educational degree, as it would enhance their ability to earn better in their professional lives. The
need amongst students to acquire basic general education is evidenced in the findings. The
ability of the learners to acquire effective knowledge about topics that interest them through the
degree, ensure the education they receive from the universities, are comprehensive and in
accordance to their wishes.
According to Krutkowski (2017), the main aim of learners, attending universities is to develop
their personal communication styles and identifying their learning abilities through various
workshop activities. Improvement of writing and oral skills is identified as a major cause for
students enrolling in degree course. The students aim to attend university and gain a degree from
the institution, as it is believed that degrees enhance an individuals’ ability to acquire better jobs

Wilson (2018), it is essential for students to develop a clear understanding of the aspects of
