INTRODUCTION
In the higher education there is huge competition for the students. The students are taught
different subjects and skills in the higher education in order to improve their learning and skill
set for the future prosperity and growth as the professional (Cottrell, 2020). The study module
are designed in a such a way that it helps the student to learn different set of skills during the
whole year of higher education. In the higher education the course are designed and customized
with the personalized learning so that students have effective learning and achieve the higher
results in their assessments and exams. The present report will identify seven key skills that are
mostly taught in the course of Study skills for higher education and their importance for student.
MAIN BODY
Seven key skills which are important for a student in their academic career
It is important for students to improve their skills in order to achieve success in their life.
These skills are taught and useful during the coursework. There are several skills which is useful
for the students in terms of completing their overall education in an effective manner and also
improve discipline among them. Some of the skills and their significance for the higher
education which is discussed as underneath:
Time management skills: This skill is useful for students to identify the significance of
time and also improve the habit in the life of students regarding the completion of their assigned
task on time without missing deadlines. It is also undertaken as one of the most essential skill for
the higher education students as it will help students to manage their time regarding the
completion of projects and assignments on given period of time (Hora, 2019). It is also helpful
for students to manage their time to complete their projects which are of urgent basis by
considering their priority factor. Time management skills also help students to identify the
methods and manage their overall stress to attend more than one class in continuity.
Problem solving skills: It depict the capability to analyse and solve issues by applying the
suitable skills in a systematic manner which is undertaken as an ongoing procedure that leads to
enable individuals to effectively analyse and determine the issues, create a mind map and then
find all the concerning alternates which are available for the issue (King, 2019). The students
also face numerous amount of problems regarding their academic career that can lead to create

barrier for their growth and success. In terms of neglecting those barriers and become successful
in their life which is important for them to solve their issues. Improving the problem solving
skills will help learners to accomplish their desired career goals and overall objectives to perform
in better way.
Stress management skills: It depict the several techniques which are being used by the
individuals to manage and control their stress level. Stress is undertaken as the outcome of
feeling of being bound and trapped by the issues in their day to day lives. Students are also
immobilised by their incapability to get positive result for the tough work by which it can lead to
stress among them. For them, to perform in better manner and get desired outcome in their
academic career is important to manager and control their stress level (Winstone and Carless,
2019). It can also lead to perform in poor manner and also get negative outcome as stress can
impact the academic performance of students. It is important for teachers to teach students how
to manage the stress and perform in an effective manner. They also taught to solve their issues
one step at a time as this skill will help students to become successful in their academic career
and also perform better in future career path.
Communication skills: The communication skills are the abilities or the capabilities of
an student to pass and receive the information and message with clarity. The communication is
of two types verbal and non- verbal, and to learn good communication skills students are taught
both type of communication in this course (Karnieli-Miller, 2020). The communication skills
comprises of active listening, speaking, observing and empathising. In the session this skills are
taught to students because to facilitate them to have effective face to face interaction, phone
conversation, communication during the job interview and much more. The communication skill
are important for the student to actively participate in the class discussions, to communicate
effectively with their classmates, to perform best in interview for future career, to gain
confidence for public speaking, to write best in the exams and assessments and most importantly
to have volume and clarity in communicating in class and outer world.
Note-making skills: Making notes in the classroom session for the better understanding
and future learning is very common and highly preferred for the effective learning experience.
The notes are the permanent records or the short keywords of the brief information discussed in
the seminars, presentation and class sessions. In the course the note making skills are taught as
this helps the student to concentrate on reading, learning, watching or hearing. Note-making are

important for the students because it is simpler way of learning and also through this student can
revise all its topics and subjects easily during the exam (ЕРМАКОВА and РОМАНОВА, 2021).
Also through note making skills the student can present all its information in clear and precise
manner and also it is good for organising the wide range of topics and subject information in
structured format for easy to memorize. With the effective note-making skills a student can
ensure that the piece of work that they are representing in the university is excellent.
Creative thinking skill- Creative thinking is the ability of students to think and conduct
their work in a new and differentiated way. With the help of developing this skill, students can
generate new ideas which will be helpful to them in solving their complex issues or they can find
some interesting ways with which the task can be handled creatively. When the student will think
in a creative way which will help them in adding value to their life(Fissore and et. al., 2020).
They become self confident about the way by which they can conduct the work in a very unique
manner. While developing the skill of creativity, the students develops their critical thinking skill
also in which they counter many of the aspects which can be done in a new and unique way. It is
because creativity of an individual cannot be done just by taking the examples of one or the other
factor but making development of creativity skill students will do those things which they have
not done ever helping them to develop their creativity skill.
Reading Skill- To the students developing reading skill is very important to them because
this is the one way by which they can achieve success in the University. Reading skill is a fun
activity which not just makes them improved in their speaking skills but it also reduces the
hesitation of students to speak in the class(Borrás-Gené, 2018). This is an important skills which
is helpful in developing their brain and helps in improving their memory. The concentration of
students is also improved because when the reading takes place then the concentration of
students is also improved because reading requires focus. Furthermore, the reading skills is a
bundle of various type of skills which the students develop. This is the reason why developing
reading skill is considered to be most important. When the students develops reading skills
which is important and required in the classroom then this helps them in increasing their level of
confidence specially to those who feel hesitated to speak. They feel independent because of the
competency which they develop and with that the development of vocabulary is also developed.
The students who makes the development of this skill are the one who develops many more
things and this is the skill which is developed by the students (Dumford and Miller, 2018).

CONCLUSION
From the above report it can be concluded that developing skills is an important factor which
helps in developing the ability to do something good. During the time of taking degree,
developing skills by an individual helps them to choose the that field which they want to pursue
in their future. With the development of specific skills which according to them will be important
helps them to achieve success in whichever job role they decide. The students can face any of the
challenges which they meet in their everyday life including the time of taking their degrees or
studying any subject.
