INTRODUCTION
Study and learning skills refers approaches which are being applied to learning. This
study is going to show importance of setting goals in academic level (Pieper and et.al., 2019). All
these help students in focusing on their study and performing all activities in an efficient manner.
Further, it will also show importance of both short-term and long term goals which provides a
direction to students. There are some ways of increasing skills and ability t remember a lot of
things and having informations in the mind such as: keeping a reading journal, summarizing,
questioning etc.
LO 1
Importance of setting goals and identification of some short-term and long term goals
Academic goals refers educational objectives which students set for themselves. It may
be short term and long term. Goal setting is an important part which works as like a motivation
for people. In the context of students and academic level, it can be said that goal setting is
fundamental to long term success. It is something which helps students to concentrate on their
study and on those things for which they have set goals. It can be said that for completing any
type of work whether it is study, getting the highest score and other have some intention and
there is requirement of motivation and goals. For example: Students wants to complete their
schooling effective with great scores because some of them wants to get a good college for
further studies, some want to complete graduation for getting a good job. So, each work is being
completed for some purpose and it is considered as goals. Without setting goals, people cannot
complete their work in an efficient manner (Greco and Kraimer, 2020). There are several reasons
of setting goals and why students set goals are discussed below:
One of the main reason of setting goals and the importance of goal setting is it gives
students focus. Completing work without focus is waste of time and efforts and without focus,
abilities of students is useless. So, it can be said that for achieving goal and something attractive,
it is important to focus on efforts. Goals give direction in which students can go and perform
their functions in a very effective manner.
Other main importance of setting goals is it helps students from procrastination because
after setting goals, students make themselves accountable to complete or finish tasks. Goals
which removes procrastination are generally long term goals. Students or people become more

passionate and dedicated to complete their set goals. So, overall it can be said that it gives
motivation to students and play important role.
There is a difference between short-term and long-term goals as it is all about time. Short
term goals are those who take less time than time taken in long term goals. Generally, short-term
goals take weeks or days and long-term goals take years or may be months (Flammer and
Bansal, 2017). Some short-term and long goals which students set include:
To get high score in next exams or in the first semester.
To complete all graduation requirements.
To make growth and progress in research writing or in any specific subject.
To make strong relationship with mentors.
All these are considered as short-term goals because all these can be accomplished in few days
and weeks.
To complete graduation with high scores and go to law college.
To get high quality certificate at the end of the course.
Some methods to improve ability to remember new informations
Students have to learn a lot of new things and whenever they learn something new they
forget old things which create several problems in the path of their success. It is important for
students to increase their skills of recalling and retaining all informations in their mind. It saves
their time and make them able to accomplish goals (Surya and Putri, 2017). There are several
ways and techniques by which students can build comprehension and retention such as:
Creating a mind map is one of the best technique which allows students to capture key
thoughts between ideas in a visual format. Students can capture informations and retain it in the
mind by connecting thoughts to the critical idea. It is effective while studying as non-linear
format makes students able to view the entirety of notes.
Questioning is a common but effective method of remembering all new informations
which student learn in their education and academic state. When student frame question while
reading than it increases their comprehension (Slavin, 2019). There are mainly 3 types of
questions by framing them, students can increase their ability to remember informations such as:
right now question, analysing text structure and research questions. All three types of questions
support students in focusing on main facts, understand the main material and also look for
informations beyond that is not in the text.

Summarizing and visualizing are also common but considered effective methods of
building comprehension and retention. In this method, students are encouraged to mainly focus
on forming visual images related to study whichever they read in the texts. It also helps them out
in better comprehension. In addition, by summarizing all the materials which students read, can
increase comprehension. The main aim of summarization and using this method is to delete all
irrelevant informations and materials and only keep those informations as well as study materials
which are important and relevant. It is one of the strategy which can be used by students as per
their skills and nature of learning things. For example: students can learn new things and
summarize study materials either by visualizing or by writing (Doyle and Zakrajsek, 2018).
CONCLUSION
From the above study, it has been summarized that goals played a vital role in getting
success. At academic level, it is important to have both short-term and long term goals because it
makes an individual able to perform their activities in an efficient manner. Further, this study has
shown some ways to increase skills and ability to remember some things and have all
informations in the mind to accomplish goals and complete activities in a timely manner.
