1NUTRITION PROGRAM
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP in United States,
is a public health initiative to eradicate malnutrition, food insecurity, poverty, and hunger that
focuses on all age groups, including children, adults, and their families. It forms a vital
component of the United States public health safety net. The argument made in this peer-
reviewed article is that SNAP has been working for the betterment of the public, but it is still
under scrutiny. It is going through a budgetary and political siege because of the actions of
congress and groups who are lobbying against the federal government. This paper also gives a
political history about this program and the Farm Bill it was related to, which is the reason SNAP
is not destroyed. It also displays some of the financial discrepancies found in the working of this
group, and it can be said that they are using maximum monetary funds of the US Department of
Agriculture (USDA). Conclusively, this article justifies that this program has the potential to take
actions that can be prosperous for the nation, but due to political rifts and agendas, it is unable to
do so. (Nestle 1631-1635).
From a personal perspective, I do agree with the article because this program has been
beneficial for public health as it helped in lifting 3.4 million people out of poverty in the past.
However, due to the political opponents and dissents, they are going through issues that are
being an obstruction for their action plans and further implementations.
