Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment presents a draft of an annotated bibliography and literature review focused on the topic of sustainability in engineering. The student has researched and compiled a list of academic journal articles and websites related to the subject, including works by authors such as Cui and Fang, Allen and Shonnard, and Poff et al. The document includes a classification and brief summary of each source, highlighting key concepts and arguments. The introduction provides a critical analysis of the concept of sustainable development, drawing on definitions provided by various authors and exploring the integration of sustainability principles into engineering practices. The assignment aims to demonstrate academic searching skills and critical analysis of key definitions applicable to the subject, fulfilling the requirements of the assignment brief which includes a partial annotated bibliography and a literature review introduction.

In Special Issue on Engineering
Management for Sustainable Development,
the author Cui and Fang has discussed the
special issues in the management system of
sustainable development in the field of
engineering. The article shades light on the
existing challenges in sustainable
development in engineering operation in
terms of nature, society and future
expectations.

According to Allen and Shonnard (2012),
sustainable development aims to create
equilibrium within the artificial interventions
and the potential outcomes of nature. The
paper also explores the cross sectional issues
of engineering management including the
role of advance engineering and planning of
sustainable ecosystem. In this paper three
aspects of infrastructure development has
been identified namely energy efficiency,
land use and intervention of eco friendly
engineering.

4SUSTAINABILITY IN ENGINEERING
sustainable developments indicates the development that satisfy the needs of existing situation without
compromising the ability to meet the expectation of future generation (Allen and Shonnard 2012). As per
this definition, sustainable development is more ethical aspect of any business or industrial operation. On
the other hand according to Poff et al. (2016), Incorporating the sustainability in engineering requires the
quality of products, technology system, environmental friendly process, integrating economic factors and
evaluation of designs. The sustainability in engineering is a abstract idea that cannot be identified or
defined through quantitative analysis. Clarke, Morris and Rhodes (2013) has argued that Sustainability
has equally limited the operational flexibility of organizations through implementing various restrictions
and constrains for making all the necessary attributes of the sustainable development framework. In 21
century the concept of sustainability mainly revolves around the aspect of environmental friendliness of
any business or industrial operations. To make the business and industrial operation under sustainable
development phase, the engineers are designing energy efficient machines which has less environmental
emission. In every basic framework of sustainability development roles of leaders and managers take a
major part. In this paper the development of sustainability in engineering will be critically explored with
the annotated bibliography. In order to do so, this paper will present an annotated literature review based
on the 3 academic articles and 2 authentic websites. After the critical exploration in existing
implementation process and concepts behind sustainability more clear way of identifying required
alternations can be obtained.
