Sustainability initiatives for MacVille:
Although the company was committed in establishing itself as a coffee retailer when
it first entered in the beverage industry and to follow that strategies were also made. However
the strategy was not that effective and hence there is need for taking new initiatives for
improving that.
The first initiative should come in the area of water management and next it should
consider the electricity. As both of these element are regarded as the fundamental elements in
the modern life and also plays an important role in improving the sustainability practise
To make the use of water sustainable following initiatives is worth considering:
 Less waste of water
 Water recycling
 Water conservation for continuous use
In order to make the electricity practise more sustainable following initiatives are important:
 Increasing use of energy efficient appliances
 Replacing old refrigeration system with newer ones that consumes less energy
 Creating practises among the workers to only use electricity when need and turn off
sources such as light , fans when not needed
Apart from these two fundamental areas others areas where initiatives are needed to be
taken is the raw material sourcing, waste management and pollution prevention. Some
important initiatives are following:
 Sustainable agricultural practises such as use of less pesticides for producing the raw
materials , helping farmers following environmental friendly agricultural practises

while ensuring economic benefits for social improvement as a whole. This will help in
sustainable raw materials sourcing
 For sustainable waste management the waste rather than decomposing without proper
plan might be considered for generation of bio energy from the waste which will help
in sustainable practise for electricity as well. It might consider to place garbage can
around the retail chain for collecting garbage so that those garbage is easier to
decompose later for environmental friendly application
Best practise model:
Two best practise models relevant to the industry are 3 overlapping circle model
already discussed in the case study. The model allows to resize the circles that is economy,
society and environment as per the preference and organization mindset. Economy is often
drawn as the largest circle as it contributes most to the profit of the organization. The next
largest circle is the society as it includes consumers and other important stakeholders. The
environment is often drawn to be smallest as it is considered as the most external to the
standard business model.
Although the 3 overlapping model is an effective model for sustainable practise it has one
drawback that it implies that it is possible to keep the economy independent of the society
and the environment which often makes the sustainable practise less effective.
The next model to consider is the 3-nested-dependencies model which address the
issues with the previous model. The model not only considers the economic, social and the
environment aspect important aspects of the sustainability, it considers the three aspect
equally important and interconnected as well for creating an organisation practise that
establish sustainable organization to serve the society and the environment.

Shortfalls in existing policy:
The existing policy that organization currently has include some shortfalls and this need
to be modified to improve the policy. The shortfalls of the policy is described below:
 Absence of proper code of conduct leading to noncompliance to standards for creating
sustainable organization
 Ineffective resource management leading to increased resource consumption such as
water and electricity
 Poor waste management due to lack of robust policy
 No policy for creating partnership and alliance with other organisation such as Fare
Trade and Rainforest alliance to improve the purchase decision for improving the
aspect of sustainable organization
 No policy for introducing biodegradables products in the retail outlets for improving
the environmental aspect for creating sustainable organization
New policy requiring development:
As already discussed in the previous section that the existing policy that MacVille
currently follows has several shortcomings and hence require development to implement the
concept of sustainable organization with success.
In the new policy following points should be considered:
 Collaboration with local organic farmers for less pollution with agricultural activities
for producing coffee beans
 Promoting biodegradable products such as cups, plates and strew and making it
mandatory for retails across the country and international retails shops as well.

 Conservation of energy such as switch off light, fan, air conditions when not required
and making it mandatory for the employees to follow that as well. this will help the
organization to
 Setting limits of energy consumption for each employee to 10 kW and keeping close
monitoring of the energy consumption as well.
 Proper waste management such as appropriate decomposition of the waste generated
throughout the production and waste to energy conversion when possible
Personnel requirements for policy revision
In order to create an effective policy to enhance the concept of sustainable
organization, it is important to personnel who have the experience and capability to
address the issues to:
 Organizations or firms expert in organic firming
 Organizations or firms expert in waste management
 Organizations or firms expert in production of biodegradable product and
distribution
 Organization who provides training for human resources and helps to develop
sustainable attitude towards organizational development
While developing policies for sustainable development it is preferable to obtain
experience opinion as it will help to create a robust and effective policy for the organization
and that is required when sustainability is considered as an important aspect of the
organizational policy. Hence these organizations have been chosen for the revision as they
have the ability to provide the required expertise for addressing different issues with the
existing policies.
