This report, submitted as part of a Sustainable Engineering assignment, examines sustainable communication in Karachi, Pakistan. It begins by providing background information on Karachi, including its population, infrastructure, and existing communication networks. The report then identifies the limitations of the current communication systems, focusing on traffic congestion and environmental pollution caused by vehicles. It analyzes the impact of these issues on the city's economic, social, and health aspects. The core of the report presents sustainable plans and recommendations to address these challenges, including promoting walking and cycling for short distances, encouraging carpooling, implementing emission checks, transitioning to eco-friendly vehicles, enforcing traffic rules, and constructing flyovers. 1SUSTAINABLE COMMUNICATION IN KARACHI
Sustainable factors
Karachi as a city
The capital city of Sindhi province of Pakistan is Karachi. Being the most populous in
Pakistan and the fifth most populous city in the world, it is required for the city to have a
sustainable communication strategy that will serve the later generations and would
simultaneously develop the life of the people of the city. As the capital of the country, Karachi is
always the centre of development of further strategies that will serve as the sustainable strategy
in future.
Existing communication in Karachi
Karachi has a network of roads of an estimated length of 9,500 kilometres that serves an
approximate of 3.1 million vehicles in a day (Mirza et al. 2019). In 2007 three signal free
corridors were introduced in Karachi that is being used by the vehicles covering large distances
and they would not be interrupted by intersections (Zubair et al. 2015). Several highways and
expressways are there for fast travelling of large distances. Pakistan Railways connects the city
with the rest of the country. Karachi port is connected to the rest of the country by freight linking
railways too. Among the public transport the services that are available are metrobus, Karachi
Circular Railway, Airways and Waterways.
Limitations of communication in Karachi
The primary limitation that can be noticed in the communication in Karachi is the
congested traffic in the entire city (Sathio, Brohi and Laghari 2019). People have to wait for
hours to reach their destination getting stuck at the traffic jams in the roads. Increasing

population and as a result increasing vehicles is the primary cause of the traffic jam in Karachi.
Besides, in the peak hours the situation get worsened which results into people getting late to
reach their destination. Another major issue that is in existence is increasing pollution. Emissions
from vehicles are daily destroying the environment gradually.
Sustainable plans and recommendations
Such conditions will definitely impact the overall economic condition of the city.
Delayed starts of the daily businesses are certain reasons behind the lag in the economic
condition. Late arrival of the people in their workplace also affects their personal life and
timetable that finally affects the social life too. In addition to that increasing pollution affects the
physical health of the citizen of the city. Various diseases that are getting chronic day by day for
which increasing pollution takes the credit. Hence, to come out of this situation, there have to
some plans or strategies that will be implemented. The sustainable strategies that could help the
present as well as the future are the following:
Awareness in people to walk for shorter trips
Start cycling for the average distances
Planning and car-pooling in the journey
Making emission check a priority
Eco-friendly vehicles such as electric vehicles (Memon et al. 2019)
Firm traffic rules
Separate bays for different types of vehicles
Flyovers at major intersections
