SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING
LO3: Roles and responsibilities for employing principles of sustainable
development
3a. Roles and responsibilities to work on in the team for sustainable development
The professional engineers plays a significant role in meeting the sustainability. It is their
duty to work for the health, safety, and welfare, with the minimum utilisation of the natural
resources and pay attention to the environment and resources sustainability. For providing the
solutions and options for maximising the social value and reduce the impacts on environment
are needed to be delivered by the team of engineers. The responsibility of the engineers for
maintaining sustainable environment are:
a) Air pollution:
the release of harmful gases and mercury with the problems of regulations
according to the established time frames and targets (Rosen 2013)
Involving with the international and national initiatives for addressing the air
issues that are trans boundary
b) Water pollution:
Resolve the issues of quantity and quality for fisheries and agricultural sectors
Modify, develop, and update the ambient monitoring system of water with the
implementation of the proper maintenance (Staniškis and Katiliūtė 2016)
c) Land pollution:
Promote the prevention of pollution in effective methods
Validate the approaches of administrative that are based on risk for highlighting
the efforts where it is most essential

3b. Sustainable engineering
The sector of engineering is the application of the mathematical and scientific principles for
the practical purposes like the manufacture, design, the operation of processes and products,
and subsequently accounting the restrictions invoked by the environmental, economics and
the sociological factors. Sustainability can be defined as the ability of making development as
sustainable by ensuring the needs of present demands without any damaging the ability or
power of the future generations for meeting their respective needs (Eales and Clifford 2013).
Better engineering solutions can help in recognising the requirements for sustaining within
the restrictions and ensure increased fairness in access to the inadequate resources are the
crucial predicaments that are lying at the base of concepts of sustainable development and
sustainability (Klotz et al. 2014).
According to the book by (Trevelyan 2007), it can be understood that the engineers are
mostly responsible for the service and production delivery that is performed by other people.
I work as the Architecture and engineering design manager and my responsibility is to
provide the technical and strategic design advice for the development and delivery of the
projects, and ensuring the requirements of the design service of the project is the best quality
that meets all the expectations of the stakeholders.
3c. Ethics for engineers
I think the code of ethics are required to be maintained by the engineers for ensuring that all
the requirements and the expectations of the stakeholders are met. These values help in
maintaining a disciplined environment in the workplace. The code of ethics for the engineers
states that the engineers must hold paramount for the healthiness, well-being, and the benefit
of community, more than the other commitments for the employers and the patrons (Reay,
Ramshaw and Harvey 2013). The engineering societies and engineering have delivered
minimal guidance on the prioritisation of the goods of community, with exception in the

intense cases like the whistle-blowing. In the situation where any engineer discovers any
immediate threat to safety of the community, the engineer is expected to provide notice to the
associated authorities (Iacobucci et al. 2013). In any case, this situation is not properly
handled and then run through in the related associations, it is expected from the engineers to
raise a concern or blow the whistle. I faced this kind of situation in my work where a
malpractice was being executed and I had to notify the proper authorities for implementing
actions against the wrong activity.
The ethical code helps in ensuring the proper functioning of the team in all the functions of
the projects.
LO4. Information sharing in the workplace
We have implemented these following processes for effective communications among the
team:
Open meeting: This is the most effective method of communicating with the team as this
method allows the interaction of all the employees.
Emails: This is the present day method of communication among the teams. This allows the
communication with the other team members without disturbing the work routine of the
employees (Panetto and Cecil 2013).
Google docs: This method allows the collaboration of the documents in real time. Any shared
document with any other people would have the access to all the allowed employees at all
times.
Cloud computing: This is the modern day storage device that is used for storing sensitive data
and secure the data with improved firewalls and provide the access to the authorised users of
the company (Yang et al. 2013).

Google drive: This method is used for providing the similar functionality like the dropbox
and contain all the file that are stored in the server of the organisation.
Skype: This is the method of providing the updated information to the employees across all
the branches of the organisations. Any quick development in the company can be provided to
the employees to have updated information to work with.
These processes are implemented for ensuring the proper handling of all the information
among the team and then use this information for developing projects.
