Introduction
As the name of the assignment says “Managing a professional Engineering Project focusing
on Sustainable Engineering” implies that the main aim of the report is to conduct Project
Management Plan to carry out successful completion of the project. Introducing Project
Management plan – It is the structured planning of the activities and tasks which will be
involved in the project. The management plan is something which helps to manage the
overall process, either managing the cost of managing the timelines, it helps to do every step
very smoothly and efficiently. As an engineer it becomes foremost important to deliver a
project which focuses on the subject of Sustainable development. When an engineering
process is carried out with the perspective of sustainability it is known as Sustainable
engineering. To conduct any project, it is very essential to have a management plan so that
projects deliver on time and does not face any failure. Hence this report is the integration of
both sustainable engineering and project management plan.
In the following report mainly four learning outcomes are achieved. The first learning
outcome is about selecting the project which is based on sustainability engineering and giving
reasons for the selection of that particular topic and also mentioning the phases of the project
management plan. The second Learning outcome is a discussion on the different stages
involved in the project with the illustration of the Gantt Chart. Third learning outcome
focuses on showing the gradual progress of the report with the illustration of Logbook. At
last, the fourth learning outcome suggests the presentation media present the project.

Learning Outcome 1
Formulate and plan a project that will provide a solution to an identified engineering
problem.
Sustainability
The word Sustainability is the term which is used to describe the concept that: utilizing of
resources in such a way that it does not compromise the need of present as well as future.
Sustainability development is defined as the processes in which designing or development
occur in such a way that the natural environment and society does not have any harm.
Sustainability engineering is the engineering process of manufacturing and operating in
which systems are developed using resources (Wong, 2016) and energy sustainably.
It has three aspects which are social, economic and environmentally sustainable. It is
generally the process of fulfilling the necessity of the people in the manner of sustainability
so that it fulfils the basic need in affordable conditions.
The major characteristics of sustainable engineering are:
It helps in increasing efficiency.
It reduces the harmful impact which is defoliating the environment and social life.
It helps in fulfilling the basic needs and requirements of social resources.
It helps in developing the processes and system in a sustainable manner.
It helps in better utilization and management of resources as well as energy.
It also helps in maintaining the economic affordability.
It also helps in integrating three aspects of environment, society, economic to create
better systems.
Engineers exhibit a very significant and important role in implementing and executing
sustainability. The main aim of the engineer is to contribute to society in maintaining
progress and welfare and ensure safety and health care in society. Engineer role ensures that
they create a system which does not exfoliate the natural resources and (Olsen, et.al, 2015)
derive system which uses minim resources and energy. Engineers are the one which aims at
finding the solution to social problems. There is the various guiding principle for engineers
which can help them in taking the right decision and arrive successful conclusion.
An engineer must aim at delivering the system which focuses on the welfare and
development of the society and economy.

They must deliver a product that decreases the exploitation of natural resources.
The engineer must take a leadership role and apply in their professional life.
They must find ways and techniques which help in using the resources effectively and
smoothly.
They should find multiple alternatives to solve the problems so that the best suited
solution can be adopted and applied.
They should find the technique and algorithms which help to minimise the adverse
effect of the risk happening on the environment and people.

P1
Select an appropriate engineering-based project, giving reasons for the selection
The engineering project selected for conducting the project is the production of renewable
energy resources. One thing is clear in this growing competitive uncertain world that we all
need energy for the development and well being to gain prosperity and attain economy.
Energy help in a growing business, improving and expanding the economy and providing
with various benefits and advantages in providing a high-quality lifestyle. Hence to meet with
increasing energy demand becomes very challenging in today’s generation.
Affordable, convenient and reliable energy resources are the need of developing nations, but
generation is seeing the energy from non – renewable sources (Owusu and Asumadu, 2016)
exploiting resources and harming the environment and economy of the society. Hence there is
a need to create renewable energy sources focused on the sustainable development approach.
Hence the engineering project selected is to diversify the production of renewable energy
resources.
has. With the help of these sources, a renewable source of energy can be generated to meet
the basic need.
Solar energy – It is the energy generated with the help of the sun. The sustainable approach
which can be used to generate energy from this source is using of solar panel which can be
installed on the roof of house or building made up of silicon material which takes and absorbs
sunlight and convert it into electricity. Using a mirror can also help in generating the sun
energy by just focusing to concentrate the rays of sunlight. It does not produce any type of
pollution or emission.

Biomass energy – It is the form of energy which is generated with the help of organic
material which includes waste from animals, wood. The electricity is generated when the
material is burned, heat is released as a result of chemical reaction which then helps to
generate electricity with the help of a steam turbine. Sawdust is an example of just sources.
Figure 2: Biomass Energy

Hydropower energy – Hydro as the name suggests water, hence generating electricity with
the help of water. In terms of size, it is the largest source of energy which is generated when
the water moves fast in the flowing river and electricity is generated when the force of water
turns the blades.

Geothermal energy – It is the generation of electricity while utilising the hot underground
surface of the earth. The earth surface consists of hot water which is brought to surface and
electricity is generated with the help of turbines.

Wind energy – It is the most powerful and commonly used energy source to generate energy.
Known to be one of the cheapest sources which stand touching the sky. The sustainable
approach to generate energy resources will be installing windmills. When the wind blows it
rotates the blades of the turbine which fuel the generator that helps to produce and generate
electricity.

Create a project plan for the engineering project
The project management plan is the structured formal document which is used to plan the
whole project. It is done to manage the different activities of the project. The various
concepts which are involved in the project management plan are risk management, cost
management, communication management, stakeholder management, change management,
scope and schedule management and Quality management. It is a type of detail
summarization of everything which is going to happen in the project from collecting and
gathering information to final delivery of the project. It helps a project to follow the
guideline according to which a project can be conducted and the final project can be achieved
successfully. It is generally made by the Project Manager before the project starts. Project
Management (Turner, 2016) plan helps to answer the answer questions like when the project
will be completed, how the project is going to progress, the total cost of the project, and
different requirements of the project. It tells the procedure of execution, controlling, closing
and monitoring of the project.
Use of project Management Plan can be best understood when listing its benefits which are as
follows:
It helps in establishing the pan for the scope, time, schedule and cost.
It helps to track the project progress with the initial planning.
It helps to communicate the plan and find methods for a better communication plan.
It helps to identify the stakeholder and team required to carry out the project.
Helps in converting the plan to a working functionality.
It helps to achieve the desired outcome and goals of the project.
It helps to handle the changes which (Meredith, et.al, 2017) will be made during the
project.
It helps to review and evaluate the performance of the team and take the necessary
steps to achieve the desired outcome.
Project Management plan follows five stages roadmap for the successful completion of the
project which are initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and closure that are described in
detail below:
Initiation – Phase 1

It is the very first stage which does not take a long duration to get completed, the main aim of
this phase is to describe the project at wider level describing and documenting every detail of
the project. It is used to carry out the feasibility study of the project generally started with a
business case. The two-process which are carried out in this phase are:
Feasibility Study – It is used to research the required resources and compare what they will
give outcome, and hence identifying the overall cost and timeline of the project.
Business Cases – It is evaluating in term of profit (Waheed, 2016) aspects and calculating
how much revenue or productivity will be achieved at the successful execution of the project.
After completing this two process project charter is created and then project Initiation
Document (PID) is designed to provide the summary of the whole project, its scope and
objective with the various stakeholders involved in the project.
Planning Phase 2
It is the second phase which involves the designing of the roadmap which will provide a
guideline for everybody to progress or work in the project. The main task involved in this
project is describing the project scope, estimating the timeline of delivery, organizing the
schedule, and gathering the resources. This phase helps in defining and assigning the task,
roles and responsibilities to the team members. The various documents which are prepared in
this phase are the management of risk plan, communication (Amrouche, et.al, 2016) plan,
scope statement, milestone, Gantt chart, Work Breakdown Structure. Two methods which can
be used for setting the right goal and objective are CLEAR and SMART.
S – Specific, M – Measurable, A- Attainable, R – Realistic, T – Timely
C – Collaborative, L – Limited, E – Emotional, A- Appreciable, R – Refinable.
Execution – Phase 3
This phase helps in converting the plan into a functioning project. The tasks which are
performed in this phase are development of the team, implementing the plan into action,
assigning of the resources, Project manager motivates and encourages the team member,
Project manager track the project and procurement management are initialised, teams
meetings were conducted to check the progress, any change (Kerzner, 2019
) or alteration is made in this phase. This phase can be thought of designing and creative

stage. Meetings are generally conducted so that team members get the idea of what they need
to achieve and how should they achieve to deliver the task within the set timeline.
Monitoring – Phase 4
This phase as the name suggests is the monitoring and managing phase which helps in
measuring the performance and checking that all the requirements and task meet their
deadline. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are used by the manager to keep track and
progress of the project. Project progress is measured in terms of Project objectives, quality of
the product, cost and time deadlines, the performance of the team members. To deliver the
project successfully, it is the duty of the Product Manager to monitor the project report and
keep track of the gradual progress of the report to align the task according to the initial plan.
Closure – Phase 5
The last phase of the project management plan which marks the closing of the project. It is
the stage which is arrived at the completion of the project. In this phase, the completed
project is delivered to the user. This stage generally involves taking feedbacks from the
customer and stakeholder. In this stage, the overall performance and success rate of the
project can be evaluated. Closing meeting conducted by the project manager marks the
official closure of the project which ensures that the project is successfully delivered to the
customer and is functioning in the good working condition.
