1. East New York Farms (ENYF) is a project, to organize youth and adults, in order to
address food justice of the community, by promoting community-led economic
development as well as local sustainable agriculture. The project is owned by United
Community Centres in partnership with the local residents. It was established in the
year 1998 in the New Lots Avenue of Brooklyn. In order to increase organic food
production in the community garden, youth and adults started working together in
small farmers’ garden which has grown over the past 20 years and now well-known
for providing fresh affordable food to its customers (United Community Centres,
n.d.).
2. Sustainability is often defined as how any biological system endures, and remains
diverse as well as productive. Sustainability is a balancing act and United Nation has
set some specific goals for sustainable development (United Nations Department of
Economic and Social Affairs Disability, n.d.). East New York Farms is also focused
to ensure food justice following the goals of sustainable development. This farm has a
basic target to provide fresh food at an affordable rate so that each and everyone can
afford right amount of food to live and thus it serves more than 17,000 customers per
year. The farm effectively follows the goal of zero hunger for the sustainable
development. Also, another goal of sustainable development is good health and
wellbeing which is one of the most important criteria East New York Farms. Building
healthy communities through food is a multi-year community engagement encouraged
by the United Nation Health (UNH). East New York Farms ensures the quality of
food and also improves access to healthy food by reducing its cost and any other
barriers to its consumptions. ENYF is highly focused to arrange fresh food to its
customers. On the other hand, providing quality education is the utmost priority for
the sustainable growth of any community and East New York Farms provides

opportunity to learn from the experts. It arranges several educational workshops
across the community. EYNF has a team of community educators that provides
cooking demonstrations, presentations, and several gardening workshops in order to
educate the neighbours about all the exciting things happening around food as well as
health in the East New York (Gregory, Leslie & Drinkwater, 2016). Also, economic
growth and decent work leads to the sustainable development of the whole
community. EYNF is also focused to ensure sustainable development through decent
work and economic growth of the community people. It offers youth internship
program to the youths of the community and in this way around 35 youths join the
program each year. It is a program of 9 months that engages youth to the hands-on
learning which helps them to get working opportunity and ensure economic stability.
Inequality is one of the greatest barriers to the growth of any community or country
and hence, in order to achieve sustainable development, it is important to reduce
inequality in the community (edible Brooklyn, 2019). East New York Farms arranges
food and work for all irrespective of the race and ethnicity or cultural beliefs. The
project has a prime target of establishing equality. It is successful as well because the
workers are from diversified communities.
