This research paper investigates the achievability of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for health. Through a literature review, the paper examines various factors influencing health outcomes, including social, environmental, and economic aspects. The study explores the complexities of achieving sustainable health development, considering both achievable and unachievable aspects. The research analyzes the interrelation of the 17 SDGs, with a focus on how factors like poverty, hunger, education, and environmental management impact health and wellbeing. The paper highlights the contradictory findings from previous research, with some studies suggesting that the goals are unachievable due to infrastructure and other barriers, while others emphasize the potential for progress through environmental reform and social determinants. The study concludes that, while sustainable health development is a complex and challenging goal, it should be pursued because it can improve the health and wellbeing of the population.

Abstract
Purpose of this research is to identify whether the sustainable development of health is
achievable or not. Hence, for this analysis literature review has been conducted in order to
develop the knowledge regarding this topic. However, it has been seen that the process of the
sustainable development of health is unachievable in most of the cases as this insight is
dependent on different factors and stakeholders. The conclusion found by this research is not
clear as the results are contradictory and most of the time it has been highlighted as unachievable
though it can be achieved to some extent.

Introduction
Sustainable development goal for health is one of the greatest concerns for the World
Health Organisation and the United Nations as a part of the sustainable development goals. This
factor comprises with seventeen main focus areas. The focus areas of this insight are as follows:
 No poverty
 Zero hunger
 Good health and well being
 Quality education
 Gender equality
 Clean water and sanitation
 Affordable and clean energy
 Decent work and economic growth
 Industry, innovation and infrastructure
 Reduced inequalities
 Sustainable cities and communities
 Responsible consumption and production
 Climate action
 Life below water
 Life on land
 Peace justice and strong institutions
 Partnerships for the goals ((ISGlobal, 2020)
The earlier mentioned factors are the total insight of the sustainable goals. Among all these
the factors the factor of the sustainable development of health no poverty, zero hunger, good

health and well being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, decent
work and economic growth are the factors which can be mentioned for the sustainable
development of health. However, it has been stated by Brolan, McEwan and Hill (2019), that
Australian government has developed Senate-led Parliamentary Inquiry in 2018 for the
sustainable development goal and it has been found that there are different stakeholders present
for this process. On this context it has also been seen that the multiple stakeholder and also the
cultural and educational differences along with the economic imbalance lead to the unachievable
condition in this context (Mintrom & Thomas, 2018). Hence, in the following section the factors
and identification of factors for the negative situation development regarding sustainable
development goals for health would be discussed.
Aim and Objective
The aim of this research is to identify the factor of the sustainable development of health
whether it is achievable or not. On this context the achievability of the sustainable development
goals for health and wellbeing would be assessed.
 To understand the possibility of achievement of sustainable development in the sector of
healthcare.
 To assess the effectiveness of the sustainable development goals in the healthcare sector.
 To recommend the most effective process to achieve the sustainable development of
health.

Does sustainable development goals can be achieved for the health and wellbeing of the
population?

Literature Review
Sustainable development of health: Unachievable
According to Hall et al. (2018), the sustainable development goals set by the United
Nations have been an insight for the future improvement of development. On this context it the
authors also highlighted that the all the 17 goals set are interrelated and especially the good
health and well being is the goal that depends on more or less every goals (Allen, Metternicht &
Wiedmann, 2017). Hence, it can be stated that the process of the improvement by the
achievement of the health wellbeing is very much complex factor. Moreover, in terms of the
present context it can be seen that the Australian government put forward the idea and planned to
reform the condition of the health sectors. Hence, it can be stated that the process has been
adapted. However, the influences of the social, environmental and the economical showed that
the achievement of this goal is never possible. On this context it can be stated that the process of
the sustainable development goal is somewhat in unachievable for the health sector of Australia.
Based on the views of Xiao (2018), the unfinished agenda from the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs); the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mental disorder; and the
health systems response to natural and humanitarian disasters are the primary factors that leads to
the unachievable situation for the sustainable development of health in Australia. It can be stated
that the health care sector of Australia comprises of the largest workforce in relation to the
nursing workforce. On this context it can be stated that the knowledge development of the nurses
for providing better care and also developing well being of the patients. However, all these
factors are affecting the sustainable development of health of people. Hence, the improvement of
this context should be considering of the education of the nurses. However, the process of the
nursing education is not enough for the improvement as other factors also affect the health and

the development as well. Thus, it can be stated that sustainable development of health is most
likely unachievable in Australian context.
Sustainable development of health: Achievable
Lund et al. (2018), highlighted that the sustainable development can be achieved for the
mental disorder treatment as the social determinants of the mental health disorder can be
addressed with the sustainable development goals. Hence, it can be stated that the process of the
health care for the mental health disorder the can achieve the sustainable development by
addressing the social determinants of health. Authors of this article reviewed 289 articles and
showed that the process of the social determinant addressing is the most effective process for
achieving the sustainable development of health and wellbeing. On this context it can be found
that the sustainable development can be achieved. Delany-Crowe et al. (2019), opined that the
sustainable management of environment would be accounted for the improvement of the health
and well being. Hence, the improvement of the environment and the resource management can
effectively help in the sustainable development of health of the population (Ruckert et al., 2017).
Thus, the sustainable development of health can be achieved by the reformation of the policies
and the regulations regarding the environmental management (Allen et al., 2019). On this context
the improvement of the health would be effective and thus the sustainable development of health
would be achieved if the implementation is considered with highest priority (Fredericks et al.,
2019).
Hence, it can be stated that the factors of the achievement and unachievable concern of
the sustainable development in the health sector is still not clear.

Method
The research would be focused on the effectiveness of the sustainable development goals
for the health and wellbeing achievement of the population. Hence, the secondary research that is
the literature review of the previous works on this topic has been used. Based on this context the
literatures have been searched in the electronic database such as CINAHL, MedLine, PubMed
and NCBI. The keyword search strategy has been implemented for searching the most relevant
articles for this topic. ‘Sustainable development goals’, ‘effectiveness of sustainable
development goals’, ‘sustainable development for health and wellbeing’, ‘Australia’, ‘sustainable
development of health achievable’ and ‘sustainable development of health unachievable’ are the
keywords used for the search of the articles (Fu et al., 2016). After the searching and obtaining of
articles the articles without full text access and language other than English has been excluded
(Greenhalgh, Thorne & Malterud, 2018). After exclusion the articles were assessed which
provide the specific knowledge about the topic only. The search results have been seen to be
comprised with 93 articles and after exclusion it has been seen that the articles with full text
access and also language and specific topic based articles were 8. Hence, it can be stated that the
articles are found with this topic of the sustainable development of health and the effectiveness
of this insight are assessed for the knowledge development.
Result
Based on the literature review it has been seen that the sustainable development of health
is one of the most effective insight for the health improvement. However, the factor of the
achievement of the sustainable development of health and wellbeing is very much contradictory
as some of the research stated that these goals are unachievable as these are dependent on
different factors (Brolan, McEwan and Hill, 2019). On this context it has been found that the

health care setting is not comprised with the infrastructure to achieve the goals (Xiao, 2018). On
the other hand some articles highlighted mental health and other health related concerns can be
improved with the consideration of sustainable development goal setting if the environment of
the people can be focused for the improvement (Lund et al., 2018). Thus, it can be found that the
effectiveness of the sustainable development goals in the health care sector cannot be neglected
(Delany-Crowe et al., 2019). However, in most of the cases this factor cannot be achieved as the
process is dependent on different social, environmental and also financial aspects (Brolan et al.,
2019). On this context it can be stated that the sustainable development of health is unachievable
in most of the cases.
Conclusion
Based on the above discussion it can be concluded that the sustainable development of
health is unachievable as this is a complex goal and dependent on various aspects of
environment, society and financial sector of a country. However, the goal setting should not be
neglected or rejected from the consideration as it effectively helps in the process of the
development and improvement of the condition of health and wellbeing. On the contrary it can
be found that the process is not effective as it has many barriers such as dependency on different
factors and improvement of the whole system. Thus, it can be stated that most of the previous
articles highlighted that the goals are not practically possible though to some extent this insight
can improve the condition of health and wellbeing of the population.
