TITLE
“The use of sustainable materials for construction: design and delivery methods.”
CHAPTER 1:INTRODUCTION
Overview:
Construction is one of the most growing and and booming industry in the whole world. It
consist of building different structures such as commercial and residential real estate, roads,
bridges, etc. There are various types of materials that are practised in this industry such as stone,
iron, wood, and many more (Azhar and et. al., 2011). Similarly, sustainable constructions is an
approach which deals in designing, converting and renovating the building or construction in
order to promote environment safety and energy saving. Sustainable materials are most preferred
material in construction industry so that it may not cause any kind of problem in future. Some of
the sustainable construction materials are bamboo, wood, timber, recycled plastic, etc.
Background of study:
Construction industry is always looking for new ideas and creative thoughts that assist

CHAPTER 2:LITERATURE REVIEW
Identify the requirement of different materials in construction business and its sustainability.
As per the views of Buro Happold, (2018) constructing a structure with sustainable
material not only benefit the environment but it also helps to save money, planning policies, etc.
There are various types of construction material available in the market. However, each material
have a different impact on the environment (Kibert, 2011). Thus, these materials can be
classified as sustainable building materials and unsustainable building materials. The sustainable
materials are those products which provide benefit to environmental, economical and social
factors along with protecting health of public and surroundings. Some of the most preferred
sustainable materials are wood, bricks, sustainable concrete, recycled metals, etc.
Similarly, unsustainable building materials are those which have a negative impact on the
environment. These materials have high carbon emission value and are very harmful for the
surrounding nature. Some of the unsustainable building materials are lead, Silica, Cadmium,
polyvinyl chloride, etc. Thus, it is important to select such materials which have low impact on
the environment and increase the sustainability of building (Sustainable materials, 2019).
Analyse the effectiveness of sustainable material for construction.
According to the views of shiredoors, Sustainability is a method that can be used to
construct an industry. The modern construction will split between satisfying demands of clients
and make responsibility to ensure indelible demand that will sustain a planet (Allen and Iano,
2013). For example, Timber is a material with low environment impact on production and life
cycle and has been certified for sustainable production and origin. There is a reuse of waste that
can be generate in other sector for production of building materials such as marbles, slate. In
order to achieve a sustainable construction people have to put an end to those bad long standing
habits if make natural resource. Sustainable resources can recycle materials like paper wood
which is necessary in nature. This business make firm needs that will show profits in industry,
which can provide benefits investing in sustainable technologies when it comes to construction.
Leadership in energy and environmental design has been standard for sustainable construction
practices since inception. The government had play a great role in sustainable construction by
creating right incentives for companies that can choose right incentives to build in a sustainable
way. Green construction goes a step further than sustainability and asks to minimise

environmental impact in construction process, it can build sustainability that can accomplish
various resources which can make efficient use of technology (SUSTAINABLE BUILDING
MATERIALS, 2019).
Challenges of using sustainable approach in designing and delivering method of construction
business.
According to Prof. Dr. P.V. Kandachar, (2019) there are various concepts of
sustainability such as eco efficiency, industrial ecology, life cycle assessment, etc. which
provides a platform to develop produce, materials and processes. Similarly, there are various
barriers in using sustainable materials while designing and delivering. For instance, some of the
common barriers are lack of knowledge about the sustainable material substitute, lack of
awareness among public, lack of training regarding usage of sustainable materials, etc. Similarly,
there are other challenges while using sustainable products. It restricts the architect or engineer
to improvise designing and concepts (Allen and Iano, 2013). Due to this, there is a need of
altering the designing approach which is not usually taken in consideration from the engineers.
There is a constant need of renovation and repairs in order to maintain these materials. For
example, applying timber in the facade of building will need re polishing after a certain time
frame. The longevity of the material will also get hamper. Thus, it is not possible to substitute
every material with eco friendly products (Special Issue "Sustainability and Materials" 2019).
The impact of using sustainable materials while doing construction; design and delivery
Sustainable material is a required factor in modern construction industry. These kind of
factors assist in providing new and modern technological services to customers for satisfying
their requirements. They have to be highly durable and can incorporate different technologies
such as capturing carbon dioxide will remove pollution.

CHAPTER 3:RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Type of investigation
There are two different approaches of investigating research. These are qualitative
research and quantitative research which are further discussed below:
Qualitative Research- It is a method of collecting non numeric data. It is also known as
market research method which collects data from conversational communication and open ended
communication. This method is beneficial to understand opinions, reasons and motivation of
others. The data is collected through different techniques such as solo interviews, observation
and participation of small scale group of individuals.
Quantitative Research- It is a method of research which is practised to collect and
generate hard facts and numeric data through logical, statistical and mathematical technique.
Apart from this, qualitative research helps in utilising numerical and statistical data to quantify
the behaviour, attitude and defined variable. Some of the broadly used method of conducting
quantitative research are survey, polls, questionnaires, etc. (Hwang and Tan, 2012) Furthermore,
the data is collected through different platforms such as website interceptors, mobile survey,
online survey, and many more.
This research will be focused on qualitative research methods for collecting information
as it will help in conducting deep information about the subject and help in coming to a
conclusion.
Research Design
Research design is referred to a framework of techniques and methods that is selected by
the researcher to gather different components of research in a logical manner. There are various
types of research designs such as descriptive, exploratory, experimental, etc. It is important for
the researcher to select the method which suites best for the nature of research in order to achieve
accurate outputs. The descriptive research design is a theory based research design which is
developed by gathering, examining and executing the collected data. Similarly, experimental
research design is a design structure which is practised to establish a relation between the effects
and cause of the situation. This style of design is often used to observe the behaviour of people in
social science. Furthermore, exploratory design research is practised to show understanding
about unexplored factors of the subject to conclude the studies (Lechner, 2014). Another method

which is widely used by the researcher is meta analytical research design. The respective style of
research design can be understand as a design framework in which statistical approach is
practised to gather and combine the results of more than one study in order to improve the
outcomes.
This research will use descriptive research design framework which will help the
researcher to collect and present theoretical data to conduct an in depth study about the
respective topic of the dissertation.
Research Approach
A research approach is defined as a plan and operations which includes broad
assumptions about the method of collecting data, examining and interpreting. It is further
categorised in two approaches. These are discussed below:
Deductive Approach- It is an approach which uses existing theories in order to develop
a hypothesis. Furthermore, research strategy is designed to examine hypothesis.
Inductive Approach- Also known as inductive reasoning, inductive theory is an
approach which starts from an observation. Furthermore, theories are generated from the
collected data.
This research is based on deductive approach in which data is collected through
questionnaire method. A sample group of 30 individuals is taken in which people that belong to
construction engineering and architecture field are considered.
Data collection
Data collection can be describes as a process of collecting and measuring information and
data in an adequate and standardized manner. This helps the researcher to test hypothesis and
measure outcomes of the respective collection. This is one of the most important part of a
dissertation. The data collection is practised by two methods. These are discussed below:
Primary Data- It is described as a raw data that is collected from the direct sources. This
means that the data is collected from first hand source (Mateus and Bragança, 2011). The
respective method is time consuming and expensive, However the results are most
trustworthy and accurate. Some of the methods of collecting primary data is observation,
survey, interviews, questionnaire, etc.
Secondary Data- The data that is not collected directly from the researcher or user is
known as secondary data. Such information is usually been collected by others, thus it is
Document Page
already available and measured by someone else. This method of collecting data is cost
friendly and less time consuming. However, the information is provided by the others.
Thus, the authenticity and updated data is not guaranteed. The secondary data is collected
by different means such as published books, newspapers, magazines, online websites, etc.
(Wong and Zhou, 2015).
In this report, the researcher will adapt both methods of collecting data i.e. primary data
and secondary data.
CHAPTER 4: RESULT
The topic of the research is very complex. Due to this, it was not easy for the researcher
to collect data from the secondary sources. Thus, primary data was collected through
questionnaire method which helped in collecting first hand information from the sources and
helped in understanding the psychology of users. In this procedure, secondary research methods
has also been used that assist in gathering information for literature review section. These kind of
practices assist in getting information on the basis of author's view points and opinions as well.
CHAPTER 5: EVALUATION
While conducting research, the researcher faced many issues. As the topic is very
technical, it was not easy to find data. Due to this, it took a lot of time for collecting data from
primary and secondary data. The collection of data was also a costly affair. Furthermore, after
collecting all the information, it took a lot of time to combine and present the information in
dissertation format. These kind of research can be beneficial for those who wants to get
information in construction industry or its material practices.
