their specifications. The company does not build any apartments, there only build single family
homes with one or two storeys and multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. One of the main
advantages of the houses built by Eco-Homes is that green technology is extensively utilised by
the company. The buildings are very energy efficient, sustainable and require very low
maintenance costs.
This report focuses on the business model of the company as well as the business
environment so as to analyse if the company can become a national organisation once its
proposed website is developed.
Part A: Evaluations of the Business
Industry Background and Business Model and Environment
Residential Homes industry is one of the most extensive industries in the world with
millions of construction projects are undertaken globally throughout the year for building
residential homes for customers. While some companies build template homes (mostly in large
scale constructions), others build customised homes as per the designs and specifications of the
customers (Massa, Tucci and Afuah 2017). Eco-Homes is one such company that builds
customised homes just as per the needs and requirements of the customers. Hence, the homes
built by Eco-Homes are not apartments but one or two storeyed homes for a single family or
customer only. Other services of the company include holiday homes and homes on rent in
addition to the personalised homes.

In the industry that is flourishing and filled with large numbers of competitors, Eco-
Homes is standout due to two main reasons:
Personalisation – The customers are allowed to provide their own inputs and personalise
their dream home at their own property locations. The option to personalise own homes are not
provided by most of the other construction companies and hence, Eco-Homes has gained its own
strong market share without much competition.
Green Technology – One of the main advantages of the houses built by Eco-Homes is
that green technology is extensively utilised by the company. The buildings are very energy
efficient, sustainable and require very low maintenance costs (Bocken et al. 2016). Furthermore,
due to the design and sustainability, these buildings are less dependent on electricity and water
supply and hence, these homes are more resistant to future water shortages and rise in price of
electricity supply. The green technology utilised includes alternative power sources, rainwater
collection, solar hot water, grey water recycling and water efficient landscaping.
Business models are specific structures of processes that the business organisations
follow as per the needs and demands of their businesses. Depending on the nature and type of
business, selection of the appropriate business model is necessary so as to ensure maximum
business efficiency of the organisation. Some of the most common business models include
advertising, affiliate, crowdsourcing, franchising, brokerage, customisation, franchising and
others (Linder and Williander 2017). Eco-Homes is a company that builds homes for customers

requirements within a pre-existing product (building) to develop a better and customised product
(eco homes).
In the residential building industry, this type of business model is uncommon but also
preferred by the customers who are willing to purchase their own homes instead of apartments
(Joyce and Paquin 2016). Hence, the business environment for Eco-Homes is less competitive
but also has significant potential to grow fast and gather national recognition, which aligns the
strategy of the company to provide services nationally after growing from a regional business.
Value Proposition
As a part of the strategy to grow from regional business to national organisation, the
company wants to implement a new business website where the customers can register and
create their own profiles to view the services provided by the company. Through this website,
the customers will also be able to book appointments for discussion regarding building their own
homes, book a prebuilt home (new or resale), rent a home (short term or long term) and others
(Srnicek 2017). While hotel bookings through website are very common today, purchasing or
renting home directly through company website is not very common. In most cases, the
customers need to contact with the construction company regarding new construction or
purchasing new apartment through telephone calls or direct face to face discussion post appoint
(Christensen, Bartman and Van Bever 2016). The idea of Eco-Homes to open a website for
online purchasing and renting homes is relatively new and will add a lot of value to the market
and the business profile of the company as well. The ability to register and create personal
profiles of the customers will interest the customers as they will also be able to submit their
designs and ideas through the business website for building their customised homes. The
implementation cost of the website will be significantly high but at the same time, it will be
requirements within a pre-existing product (building) to develop a better and customised product

beneficial for the company considering long term implications and the value it adds to the
business profile of the company.
SWOT Analysis and Discussion
SWOT analysis is an effective method for analysing the internal environment of a
business organisation and it is used on Eco-Home’s business as shown in the following table
(Kavadias, Ladas and Loch 2016).
Strength
The main strength of the company is the
uniqueness of the services that favours the
customers. The customers are allowed to
provide their own inputs and designs that
makes the company highly popular among
customers who seek customised personal
homes.
Weakness
The main weakness of the company is its
lack of sufficient growth in terms of
business. The construction costs of the
homes built by the company are
considerably high and the profit margin
compared to it is relatively low resulting in
slow growth of the company in the market.
Opportunity
Due to less market competition in the
country, the company has the opportunity
to grow as a national organisation with the
selection of right business model and the
utilisation of the proposed new website.
Threat
The main threat for the company is that
customised homes are not very popular in
the country and are only suited for high
end customers whereas low end customers
are not able to afford the eco homes.
Hence, even if the company becomes
national, it is still unsure it will gain much
popularity as expected.

Porter’s Five Forces Analysis
The external business environment of the company can be analysed using Porter’s Five
Forces analysis technique as discussed below (Foss and Saebi 2017).
Bargaining Power of Suppliers – In the case of Eco-Homes, the bargaining power of the
suppliers is high because of the amount of technology required to build the eco homes. The
suppliers have got the window of opportunity to bargain and set high prices for the resources
sold by them.
Bargaining Power of Buyers – In the case of Eco-Homes, the bargaining power of the
buyers is low. This is because the company does not directly sell an existing product at any price.
Rather, the customers provide inputs of their designs and requirements and prices are set
accordingly that change with changing requirements of the customer. Thus, there no window for
bargaining for the buyers.
Threat of Substitutes – The threat of substitutes is low. The main reason behind this is
that eco home itself is a new product i.e. a building equipped with green and sustainable
technology. Hence, there are no chances of substitutes, at least in the next few years.
Threat of New Entrants – The threat of new entrants is medium as there are not many
companies that build eco homes in the country. Moreover, the demand for residential homes in
the country is increasing and whereas there are not many new comers for eco homes. Thus, at the
current situation, the threat of new entrants is medium
Market Rivalry – Market rivalry for the company is low. While the market rivalry for the
construction industry is high, there are not many companies that build personalised eco homes.
However, the market rivalry is expected to increase in the next decade.
