Introduction
Advances in healthcare practices have led to an exponential increase in data processing
capabilities. Management of vital patient information has proven to be a challenge for nurses
and other healthcare practitioners. Electronic health record keeping has transformed itself in
healthcare organizations to improve and enhance on the quality of care and safety among the
patients. Electronic healthcare systems are geared towards enhancing and facilitating optimal
patient management, it has improved to revolutionize patent access information data. In parts
of Europe, usage of electronic health records has been effective in improving access and
enhances communication between high volumes of clinical data and aid easier retrieval
process, (Persell et al., 2011).
Among nurses, usage of electronic health records plays a crucial role in improving care
services. It allows easier access to patient data and information. Further, it has led to improving
time management in delivering care. The nursing practice committee has often made a
consistent recommendation on the evidence-based practice which entails accurate and timely
access to patient information to inform care decisions, (Lavin, Harper & Barr., 2015). This
systematic review assesses the effect of electronic health documentation on nursing practice.

Methodology

Literature Review
The literature research yielded key thematic areas in assessing the role of electronic
health records in the nursing practice. Nurses play a crucial role in the acquisition, evaluation,
and application of electronic health records, (Synder & Oliver, 2014). The results showed that
EHR s improves greatly care quality, performance, reduced costs and time management
(Powell-Cope, Nelson & Patterson, 2008).
Care quality is described as doing the right things at the correct time to offer excellent
outcomes. EHR improves patient safety, quality, and efficiency of care. Studies undertaken by
Menachemi & Collum (2011) and Persell et al (2011), showed that computerized nurse
reminders improved care and management of influenza and pneumococcal immunizations with
a greater increase from 35% to 50%. Further reduction on communication time and
comprehensive health care records among healthcare providers have initiated application of
EHR as a novel technology in health nursing practice, (Campbell, Mori, Osterville & Guise.,
2011; Lorenzi, Kouroubali, Detmer & Bloomrosen, 2009).
Observance of time management among nurses has improved nursing outcomes. Nurses
agree that time efficiency is crucial to healthcare performance. EHR improves on time factors,
data viewing and reminder alerts which improves time management, (Poissant, Pereira,
Tamblyn & Kawasumi,., 2005). Further usage of EHR among nurses among novice nurses
improved on relaxation and improved confidence, (Miller et al., 2014).
Utilization of EHR, have shown improved barriers linked to health care costs, which
leads to improved utilization of care services offered by nurses. Supportive approaches which
enhance information technology has yielded positive nurse-patient interaction, (Jha et al., 2009
and Pierpont & Thilgen, 1995).
