AI Summary
This systematic review examines the impact of school-based interventions on student health and wellbeing, and their subsequent effects on academic achievement. The review, conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in partnership with Evidence for Learning (E4L) and VicHealth, analyzes various studies, particularly randomized controlled trials (RCTs), to assess the effectiveness of wellbeing programs. The primary focus is on academic skills, resilience, and the prevention of substance abuse. The findings indicate that school-based wellbeing programs have a small to moderate positive impact on student academic achievement, equivalent to approximately three months of additional learning. The review also considers secondary outcomes related to mental health and overall wellness, highlighting the importance of physical activity and social-emotional learning (SEL) skills. The research aims to provide evidence-based insights for educators and policymakers to promote student wellbeing and improve academic outcomes.
