The two BP catastrophes could have had been avoided with well-planned
and organised systems engineering practices. An article suggested that the
incident at Deepwater Horizon could have had been prevented if the
blowout preventer had been activated timely (Rascoe, 2011). With proper
systems engineering practices, this could have been resolved too easily.
Project management and system engineering practices are therefore must
for the engineers to follow safe practices at work.
The Texas disaster was also found to be a safety failure where BP was found
to be missing the adequate establishment of a process overlooking the safety
parameters (SEBok, 2018). A project manager could always refer to the
various systems engineering applications for being able to manage the
processes within the team in such a way that they are efficient and not
overlooking any standards of health and safety (Kerzner, 2004). For
resolving these problems, a project manager could take help of the various
software to model the problem and then trying to identify the possible
solutions to that. As per the report after Texas disaster, there was a call for
an independent auditing function to analyse the process employed by BP
(SEBok, 2018). So, it could be speculated that BP was lacking the proper
implementation of project management and systems engineering practices.
