Tall tales are stories that carry exaggerated characters and events. Exaggeration is used
by the authors of these Tall tales to engage the readers and motivate them to explore their
imagination and think about the impossible (Angela, 2018). Those characters and events could
be imaginary or get inspired by real-life events.
The man who moved the mountain
When I was young, I saw him digging away at the base of a huge mountain. As I went to
my school near the edge of the village I could hear the sound of his chisel as he worked on the
stones from afar. "Click”."Clank". "Click". He never looked at us when we passed him.” Is he
crazy? “I thought to myself. Why on earth would he dig a mountain? The villagers made fun of
him. My friends laughed at him and often threw stones. Everybody thought he was perhaps a
little mad. Even my family believed that he was a bit strange. My father remarked that as he
cannot move a mountain, he is perhaps removing it.
I am talking about Mr. Hamilton who is well known as the “mountain man”. Today, he is
a respected and famous man not just within the village but in the whole county. Almost every
newspaper has come to our village to interview him and do a story on him. After all, here was a
man who had single-handedly removed a mountain by just chiseling it away for forty years! And
when asked what motivated him to take on that colossal task, he answers in simple words, for my
son and village folks. Getting rid of the mountain connected the village directly to the city road
and faster access to the hospital. Apparently, Mr. Hamilton had lost his only son because he
could not take him to the city hospital on time and it was because of the mountain.
