INTRODUCTION
In the present scenario, every nation seeks for higher economic growth and development.
For this purpose government of nation takes various initiatives so that business can grow and
contribute to overall development. Over the past one decade, small businesses have started to
play very significant role in enhancing the value of a country’s overall rate of Gross Domestic
Products (GDP). It can be stated that firms categorized in small business enterprise are the one
which operates at a very low level and has workforce of less than 200 employees. However, it
can be argued that operating in highly competitive market is not an easy task for small businesses
and they are required to place wide range of efforts and resources in order to attract customers
and sustain in the marketplace (Bannock, 2005). The present research report is based on Tate
which is a UK based consultancy firm that operates at small level. This study reflects the profile
of above mentioned business enterprise. Apart from this, it also highlights the new areas where
Tate can expand its existing services.
TASK 1
1.1 Profile of selected small business
Tate consultancy is a small business enterprise which provides different types of
consultancy services to its clients which are generally based in UK. Furthermore, operating at
small scale, the selected business enterprise do not place much efforts in marketing and it is
attracting customers by delivering accurate, fast and quality services to them. Its client base
generally involves different types of businesses operating in the country. The key strengths and
weaknesses of Tate consultancy are provided below as:
Strengths
Staff members – In the modern era, employees are considered as one of the biggest and
most important asset of any business enterprise. The rationale behind this is that effective
and skilled workers help a business entity to gain competitive advantage over other
market players in the industry (Tate, 2016). In terms of Tate, it has been identified that
experienced and skilled workers are its biggest strengths. The workers are capable
enough to identify the need of its clients and deliver services according to the same. This
has resulted in developing high rate of satisfaction among customers and has also
contributed a lot to overall success of Tate (Aloulou and Fayolle, 2005).
Quality of services – At present the level of services which has been delivered by the
above mentioned business enterprise is very effective and satisfactory. This has supported

the small business enterprise to attract customers and sustain in the highly competitive
marketplace (Bierly and Daly, 2007). It can be expressed that Tate carries out changes in
its services at regular intervals and this is another major strength which is supporting in
retention of its major clients.
Weakness
Low customer base – Even though the selected business enterprise is delivering
satisfactory services, its existing market share is very low. This can be termed as one
of the major weakness of Tate and it is creating obstacles in overall success of the
business enterprise (Working at Tate, 2016). In order to sustain in long run and gain
competitive advantage over other market players, it is required by the small business
enterprise to enhance its customer base.
Marketing – In the modern era, marketing has become very important for overall
growth and success of companies as it directly results in attracting more and more
customers. In terms of Tate, it can be asserted that the business is still using
traditional methods of marketing which are sometimes ineffective (Ekanem, 2013).
The brand is required to enhance its marketing activities as majority of people are not
aware about the brand name and services delivered by Tate.
1.2 Analysis of business using comparative tools
It can be stated that nowadays companies are required to carry out analysis of their
performance at regular intervals as it helps in identification of the fact that whether they are
heading towards right direction or not. In addition to this, analysis at regular intervals also
supports in identification of the key areas which can be improved. The analysis of Tate using
comparative tools is mentioned below as:
Regular clients – After carrying out the assessment of Tate, it can be stated that at
present Tate is offering its services to 5-7 clients daily. Furthermore, for a small business
the number is quite good but in order to develop as a brand in market, the selected
business needs to increase this number by 20-25 clients daily. This will help the firm to
achieve higher and desired growth by improving its sales volume (Williams and
Schaefer, 2013).
Financials – The sales and profits of a firm are two major parameters which can assist in
carrying out comparison of a company. As compared to other small consultancy

providers, the sales and profits of Tate are high. This is because of the fact that services
delivered by selected business are satisfactory (Bititci and et. al. 2012). However, it can
be critically argued that the company is required to place wide range of efforts and
resources to improve its existing financial performance and grow in highly competitive
marketplace.
Employee turnover - The internal management of selected business enterprise is very
strong as the rate of employee turnover is very low. Majority of the workers in Tate are
satisfied with the culture and structure which has been developed internally (Freel, 2005).
Furthermore, satisfied workers are able to deliver more accurate and fast services to
clients and this is contributing to the overall success of business enterprise.
TASK 2
2.1 Appropriate actions to over the weaknesses
Over the past few years, the increasing competition among service industry has forced
many businesses to identify their weaknesses and work upon the same. Nowadays, customers are
being made available with wide range of options and alternative to choose from. This has
resulted in creating obstacles in the growth and success of many businesses. In context of Tate, it
can be stated that its objective is to become one of the leading and most renowned consultancy
provider in the country (Longenecker and et. al. 2013). For this purpose, it will be required to
take corrective measures to overcome all the above mentioned weaknesses.
One of the major and most important actions which can be taken by the selected business
enterprise is related to marketing of the services provided. It can be asserted that Tate has always
lacked in carrying of strong and aggressive marketing of its services and this has affected the
volume of sales. This weakness can be overcome by using the modern tools and techniques of
marketing (Charantimath, 2005). The reason behind this suggestion is that modern tools are not
only cost effective but they will also help the company in reaching mass audience in very short
span of time. The company can start carrying out aggressive marketing of services with the help
of tools such as social media, internet and email marketing (Fritsch, Brixy and Falck, 2006). This
will help in developing a strong brand image in the market place by creating more and more
awareness among customers.
Another identified weakness of the selected small business enterprise is low customer
base which can be overcome by introducing new and innovative services. At present, most of the
Document Page
consultancy services providers in the country are offering same kinds of services to people in the
market (Bridge and O'Neill, 2012). Therefore, introduction of new and innovative services will
help Tate to attract more customers and enhance its base by offering something new to them.
2.2 Analysis of ways in which existing performance can be strengthened
Sustaining in a market which is highly competitive is a very big task for companies
operating at small scale. Furthermore, small businesses needs to identify and work upon the ways
through which they can manage and strength their existing performance in the market. One of the
most effective ways among all is of ensuring the fact that no form of discrimination is carried out
within people working in the company (Fritsch, Brixy and Falck, 2006). This is effective because
it will support in maintaining the existing level of employee turnover which is very low in long
run. It is a well know fact that carrying out discrimination among workers results in creating
sense of dissatisfaction among employees and this directly results in affecting the service quality.
Thus, by eliminating all forms of discrimination, Tate will be able to maintain its existing
workers and deliver more satisfactory services to clients.
Another way which can be used by the selected small business enterprise to maintain and
strengthen its performance is of focusing upon training sessions for employees (Gorgievski,
Ascalon and Stephan, 2011). It can be asserted that training sessions at regular intervals will help
in enhancing the knowledge base and skill set of employees. Along with this, it will also assist in
improving the overall service quality which has been delivered by the business enterprise. Other
than this, feedback and reviews can be taken from existing customers in order to identify the key
areas which need to be improved (Hamel, 2008). It can be said that by working upon those
identified areas, the company will be able to retain its existing customers and attract new ones in
the long run.
2.3 Recommendation with justification for the new areas in which business can expand
It can be stated that in order to sustain in highly competitive marketplace, it is required by
every business enterprise to keep looking forward to the new areas where it can expand its
operations (Hatten, 2015). This result in enhancing the customer base and market share of
organizations and also supports them to gain competitive advantage over other market players in
the industry. Tate is a consultancy service provider and the new areas where it can expand its
operations are mentioned below as:
Providing training to employees- Over the past few years, there has been a significant increase
in the training and development needs among workers. Training helps workers to enhance their
Document Page
knowledge base; skills set and also improves their overall productivity (Grimaldi, Rafele and
Cagliano, 2012). However, due to lack of resources some businesses are not able to carry out
these kinds of sessions for their workers. This can be a great opportunity for a small business like
Tate as it can start conducting training and development sessions for workers on behalf of its
corporate clients.
Counselling- The selected business enterprise can also start delivering services related to career
counselling to students and other people in the country (Lederer and Maupin, 2015). This will
help Tate to enhance its existing market share and will also support in increasing the customer
base.
Conducting workshops and seminars – In the modern era, workshops and seminars has emerged
as very important tool which supports in growth and success of a business enterprise. Tate can
start conducting seminars and workshops areas such as employee motivation, time management,
leadership, team working, problem solving, logical thinking etc. This will support the small
business in getting new opportunities for growth and profit enhancement.
TASK 3
3.1 Assessment of existing business objectives and plans
In the modern era, objectives and plans can be considered as one of the most crucial
aspects of companies. Furthermore, objectives provide direction to businesses and also support
them in heading towards right direction (Quinn and Strategy, 2013). However, it can be argued
that growth cannot be achieved only by developing objectives as businesses needs to carry out
their assessment at regular intervals and also need to develop effective plans for accomplishment
of the same. An assessment of existing business objectives and plans of Tate consultancy is
provided below as:
To become market leader in next 2 years - It can be termed as one of the main and most
important objective of Tate as a business enterprise. At present the small business is
looking forward to become the market leader in consultancy providing industry of UK.
For this purpose, it has developed a effective plan which lays emphasis on delivering the
best and most satisfactory services to clients (Wheelen and Hunger, 2011). Along with
this, the small business has also started carrying out market research to understand clients
changing demand and then offer services according to the same.

To enhance its brand image within next 1 year – Tate’s objective is to develop a strong
brand image in the mind of people and its corporate clients in the country. Along with
this, it also aims at enhancing the same at regular intervals in order to carry out smooth
flow of all operations and activities in the long run. However, the business plan which
Tate is using to achieve this objective cannot be termed as satisfactory as the small
business is still relying heavy on traditional tools and techniques of marketing
(Zacharakis, Spinelli and Timmons, 2011). There are certain changes which need to be
carried out in marketing strategy in order to achieve the above mentioned objective.
To maintain low rate of employee turnover - It can be termed as another major objective
of the selected small business enterprise. Tate considers all its employees as the precious
and most valuable assets and seeks for retaining them in the long run. In order to achieve
this objective, it has developed a plan in which open culture and a mixed style of
leadership is used (Williams and Schaefer, 2013). This is mainly done in order to create
sense of satisfaction among employees and retain them in long run.
3.2 Revision of business plan to incorporate changes
In order to carry out smooth flow of operations and achieve all the above mentioned
objectives, it is required by Tate consultancy to make certain changes in its business plan. One
of the major and most important among all is linked with the style of leadership which has been
adopted. It has been observed by the researcher that at present Tate is using mixed style of
leadership while carrying out its business practises (Fritsch, Brixy and Falck, 2006). However, it
can be argued that in order to enhance the degree of employee satisfaction and encourage
innovative ideas, it is required by Tate to focus upon democratic style of leadership. This will
help the selected business enterprise to get some new and innovative ideas which can be used to
attract more and more corporate clients.
On the other side of this, changes are also required to be carried out in the marketing
activities which have been used by the firm. The selected business needs to start focusing upon
the modern marketing tools such as email and social media marketing (Bridge and O'Neill,
2012). The rationale behind this is that the above proposed change will support in carrying out
more effective and satisfactory marketing of services which has been offered by Tate. Another
key area where changes can be done is related to training and development of its existing
workforce. It can be expressed that the selected firm needs to focus on training needs of all its
Document Page
workers and take corrective measures regarding the satisfaction of the same. This will help in
improving the existing level of knowledge base and skill set of all staff members and will also
contribute in long term development of the small business enterprise (Gorgievski, Ascalon and
Stephan, 2011). Thus, it can be stated that changes are required to be incorporate in the above
mentioned key areas in order to achieve the long term and short term objectives which has been
developed by Tate.
3.3 Preparing an action plan to implement changes
In the modern era, businesses cannot sustain in long run by delivering the same kinds of
products, services and by carrying out same kind of business practises in log run. Changes are
required at regular intervals in order to maintain the interest of customers and carry out desired
flow of all services and products (Lederer and Maupin, 2015). However, it can be critically
argued that carrying out changes at regular intervals is not an easy task and companies are
required to take care of wide range of factors. For example changes often create sense of
dissatisfaction among workers as they can resist to the changes incorporated.
Along with this, changes can also results in increasing the rate of employee turnover
which is not beneficial for any company operating in the market place. In order to carry out
desired changes in the best possible manner and achieve the best possible results, it is required
by companies such as Tate consultancy to develop a suitable and effective action plan. Here, the
first and foremost stage of action plan will be to define the aim and objective which it seeks for
accomplishing through those changes (Zairi, 2012). In terms of Tate, the objective is to enhance
its brand image and become the market leader in UK.
The second stage of change management plan is linked with defining the key strategies
which can be used to incorporate those changes. Here, employees will be encouraged to take
part in the decision making process and they will be also allowed to present their views and
suggestions regarding how changes can be implemented and managed in the best possible
manner. The third stage of action plan is regarding implementation of changes where the
modifications required will be actually incorporated by Tate consultancy. The last stage in action
plan of change is of evaluation where it is evaluated that whether changes done have presented
desired outcomes or not (Quinn and Strategy, 2013). This evaluation will be carried out by
matching actual performance with the one which was expected.

TASK 4
4.1 Impact of proposed change on business and its personnel
The above mentioned changes had both negative and positive impact on the business as
well as on its personnel’s. It can be asserted that the rationale behind carrying out changes was to
improve the overall operations of Tate consultancy and make the small business capable enough
to achieve all its objectives. In terms of positive impact, it can be stated that the small business
enterprise has been able to improve overall business performance by the changes which has been
proposed and carried out.
At present the small firm has started marking use of modern marketing tools such as
internet and social media marketing (Aloulou and Fayolle, 2005). This can be justified by the
example that Tate consultancy has developed its official page on social media and this has
resulted in creating more and more awareness among people in the market. Effective promotion
is now carried out on social media sites and this has improved the overall sales of small business
to a great extent. Nowadays, improvement is also carried out in the way how Tate used to
interact with its corporate clients regarding the issues and problems which have been faced by
them. The market share and customer base of Tate consultancy has been enhanced after carrying
out the changes which has been proposed.
On the contrary of this, it can be argued that the proposed modification in business
practises has also affected the overall operations in negative sense. For example some workers
are not able to resist the changes and this has created negative environment in the entire
organizations (Bierly and Daly, 2007). Training sessions are now conducted at regular intervals
and instead of enhancing the performance of employees, these sessions has developed a feeling
of boredom in some of the people working at Tate. However, it can be expressed that overall the
changes will results in providing wide range of benefits to Tate and will also assist in
accomplishment of all its objectives in the long run.
4.2 Planning how changes will be managed in the organization
In the current stage, change management has no longer remain an easy task for
companies as there are wide range of factors which needs to be taken into consideration at the
time of carrying our desired changes. In order to manage changes and get the best possible
outcomes, it is required by Tate to develop team of employees who will be responsible to
manage changes and ensure that all desired outcomes are achieved (Ekanem, 2013). The people
working in change management team are required to be effective and efficient so that they can

deal with the issues and challenges faced by small business enterprise in terms of managing the
changes which has been implemented. On the other hand, people working in change
management team will be also responsible to ensure that employees working in Tate do not face
any kind of issues in terms of coping up with the modifications carried out (Bridge and O'Neill,
2012). They will need to make sure that employees remains motivated and give their best
towards the success of selected business enterprise.
In order to manage changes, feedback and reviews can be encouraged from other staff
members with an objective to identify what can be the best possible strategy to manage changes
carried out in long run. Apart from this, different types of tools and techniques regarding change
management can be used by the small business in order to manage the above mentioned changes
(Gorgievski, Ascalon and Stephan, 2011). However, it can be argued that the main and most
important focus should be laid on communicating the need and benefits of changes clearly to all
staff members working in Tate. This will play a vital role in making the changes successful as it
will allow the workers to understand the key reason behind the fact that why changes are being
carried out in the organization (Hamel, 2008). Along with this, it is also required by the selected
small business enterprise to carry out review of the changes carried out in order to identify
whether they are heading towards the right direction or not.
4.3 Improvement in business performance over a given time scale
It can be expressed that changes carried out within a business enterprise will take some
time period to deliver the desired results. The small business will be required to ensure the fact
that it is heading towards right direction and has implemented the changes in the best possible
manner. In terms of time scale, it can be stated that first week is the time in which Tate will
required to determine what exact changes needs to be done in the business enterprise.
On the basis of information gathered it will define the key alternatives available and
which can be used to manage changes in organization in the second week (Berry, Sweeting and
Goto, 2006). Furthermore, the third week consists of activity in which the best and most suitable
alternative will be selected from different alternatives available in front of the business. After
selection of the best alternative, activities such as implementation and monitoring will be carried
out. The last stage consist of activity in which the selected small business enterprise will find out
loop holes in action plan and then take corrective measures to overcome those in the best
possible manner.

CONCLUSION
From the above carried out research report, it can be concluded that small business
enterprise has started to play very significant role in overall growth and development of a
country’s economy. Furthermore it can be inferred that being a small business enterprise, Tate is
at present facing very intense competition from the other small and big requirement service
providers in the country. It can be also concluded that there are certain areas which needs to be
changed by Tate in order to carry out smooth flow of all its operations and activities. For

example it is required to change its marketing practises and start making use of modern
marketing tools in order to attract more and more customers. From the above conducted research,
it can be also concluded that carrying out changes is not an easy task for small businesses.
