In the whole global industry, HP was an early mover towards adopting TBL within
their organization setting. In this context, Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett tried to have an
early as well as thorough understanding about the roles and responsibilities of organizations
in global society ( Bevacqua, 2018). Packard and Hewlett identified that in order to integrate
knowledge as well as the relational network of the workforce in the best positive TBL
approach should be utilised. Thus, the HP Way was a concept that made the difference in
building up an effective organization culture at HP’s workplace. The organization set some
rules for promoting TBL within the organization setting by making teamwork skill a
compulsory skill for the people who join HP and hence they had to learn TBL quickly. Thus,

Shared values and culture
This characteristic of a team-based organization is driven through organization’s
mission, culture and core values (Bersin, 2016). An organization should have guidelines as
well as value systems to assist people who are working in globally dispersed teams to be
closer to the company’s consumers. Hence HP is having this characteristic of understanding,
measuring as well as aligning culture of their workforce through adopting a trend ‘Shape
Culture, Drive Strategy’ (Wisdom , 2018).
Transparent projects and goals
This characteristic makes any organization a TBL organization as by providing
transparency of company projects and goals, the firm evolves harmony as well as faith among
their team, which allow people to perform efficiently in a team. As we know that employees
working in teams as well as small groups work with other teams and they cannot do so unless
the company goals are clear, company’s financial goals are well communicated and
employees know what their colleagues are operating on. In this way, this characteristic also
allowed HP to grow as a TBL organization ( Quain, 2019). In this way, along with above
mentioned characteristics there are following essential characteristics which make an
organization a team-based organization:
Feedbacks and free flow of Info
Employees are rewarded for contribution and skills, not for position
Apart from essential characteristics, leadership styles utilised by the team-based
organizations include transformational, servant, democratic and shared leadership (Rita,
Neda, & Nasrin, 2016).
Impact of team-based setting on leadership power and influence
The team-based setting in HP organization considerably affect the leadership power
and influence as teams are easy to be handled and managed (Markovich, 2018). When the
entire organization is split and organized into different teams for different functions then
leadership power as well as influence will be having great importance as well as effect from
the organizational success viewpoint. For an example, leaders of different teams of the
organization will have more power to understand, manage as well as influence their team
members to get better work than that of non-TBL based organizations (Lubeck, Lois, &
Heidi, 2013).

foster teamwork. HP’s leaders, supervisor or managers focus on facilitation hence their
teams automatically focus on attaining company objectives together. In this way, above
actions of leaders enables true collaboration within the company workplace (Deloitte
Insights, 2016). Hence, leaders of team-based organization introduce and promote
empowerment, trust, goal setting, team accountability, autonomy as well as shared leadership
among their sub-ordinates so that an effective team-work can be fostered in a TBL based
organization ( Bevacqua, 2018). Leaders’ action in team-based organizations also focused on
conflicts management strategies in order to avert team-conflicts to a large extent. Likewise
HP company, leaders’ actions should be always their team-oriented so that team-work can
establish company’s goals, mission as well as vision effectively (Bersin, 2016).
