1 INTRODUCTION
Communication in simple terms can be expressed as an exchange of information from
one person to another so that various functions can be effectively performed. Open and
transparent communication contributed to the effective coordination and cooperation of
various efforts of the individual for effective achievements of particular objectives. A strong
team is important in the growth and success of the enterprise as it helps in increasing overall
productivity, quality of products, and services delivered to end-users. There are several
barriers in verbal and nonverbal communication such as noises, media, and language or
emotional barriers that impact the information that needs to be exchanged. Poor
communication leads to ineffective coordination of individual efforts towards achievements
of common objectives. The report has discussed models of communication, skills that are
required by an individual to effectively exchange information. At last, suggested the way
communication can be improved in the workplace so that the overall objectives of a firm can
be achieved.
2 Three Model of communication
Communication is the most important process that helps in sharing ideas, feeling of one
person to other for performing a particular task in a coordinated manner. Better
communication helps in building and maintaining a strong relationship between diverse
individuals to work as a team for completing specific tasks (All 8 Models of Communication,
Explained! (2020). Therefore it can be stated that communication contributed to the growth
and success of the enterprise by meeting the needs of employees and customers. There are
numerous communication models such as Shannon- weaver, Berlo’s, and Osgood Schramm
that can be used by a person to enhance the importance of information exchanged. Such as:
Linear is a type of communication model that does not involve the process of feedback
thus it is a straight exchange of information between two and more people. Such as in linear
model sender encodes the message so that it can be transferred to another person by the
medium of channel then it is decoded by the receiver to understand particular information.
Therefore some examples of linear communication models as per the author are television,
newspaper, and radio where information is easily exchanged to mass or number of people.
2.1 Shannon- weaver communication model
Shannon- weaver communication model stated that there are key five parts in the
communication process that is sender, channel, receiver, decoder, and encoder. The model
mostly emphasis three main processes that are encoding, decoding, and sending as noise

disruption occurs at these stages only. It is the first model that has explained the noise in
process of communication such as a misspelling in email or mishearing conversation on the
radio or other broadcast media (Slyngstad, DeMichele, and Salazar, 2017). Therefore, these
ideas have contributed to the generation of ideas of feedback to make the communication
process more effective and better.
2.2 Berlo’s communication model
Berlo’s is another model of communication that includes four main steps that lead to
effective communication between people such as message, source, channel, and receiver.
The source is an element of communication which means skills, culture, and attitude of
sender and message is information that the sender wants to transmit to end-users so that tasks
can be accomplished in the best possible manner. Different channels are used by the sender to
communicate or exchange information such as hearing, touching, and smelling (Diaz, 2018).
The last element of communication is receivers that get information transfer by the sender
and take appropriate action as information exchanged.
2.3 Osgood Schramm model
Osgood Schramm's model stated that there is no difference between the receiver and the
sender of information that means both encoder and decoder have an equal position. There is
continuous communication between the sender and receiver like in case of face to face
discussion where receivers immediately give their feedback to the sender. Thus it helps in
removing the barrier of communication that noise or misunderstanding of information so that
tasks can be completed in the best possible manner.
4 CONCLUSION
It can be concluded from the above analysis that there various models of
communication that can be used by the individual to effectively share information with other
persons. Schramm is the best communication model as it helps in taking feedback from the
receiver that it has understood the message as intended by the sender or not. So that definite
and corrective action can be taken within a limited time frame to get better outcomes.
Therefore, it can also be stated from the above discussion that Shannon and Weaver's model
communication helped in the face to face discussion thus avoiding the chance of conflict and
confusion regarding information by the receiver.
3 Communication skills
Every individual must have good communication skills to share its feeling, innovative
ideas with other people that are living in society. Effective communication skills help a

person to get the best opportunities in a future career as it can easily share ideas with a large
number of people within a limited time (Thomas, 2020 ). It also contributed to the effective
implementation of the decision of the firm and resolving key issues or problems faced by
other individuals by providing a better solution. Therefore, types of communication skills that
need to be present within a particular person are illustrated below:
3.1 Verbal communication
It is communication skills in which a person needs to have a good command of
language or sufficient knowledge of words that have a similar meaning to avoid confusion or
misunderstanding. It should have a better knowledge of various languages especially English
so that other individuals can understand the information in the correct sense (Buzzanell and
Houston, 2018). A misspelling or ineffective pronunciation needs to be avoided for better
oral and written communication and a share of ideas. Correct media needed to be selected by
the sender while communicating orally or written so that no confusion remains in the mind of
the receiver.
3.2 Nonverbal communication
Nonverbal communication skills refer to less use of words for exchanges of
information or more use of facial expression, gesture, posture, tone, and pitch of voice or sign
and signal by senders so that receiver can understand the information in a better way.
Individuals, to enhance their communication skills, should have a good command of facial
expression, sign, gesture, or body language for avoiding conflict and confusion in the future.
Therefore, it can be stated that nonverbal communication plays a great deal in sharing
information from one person to another.
3.3 Listening
It cna be stated that listening is an important part of communication as individual by
listening other view, ideas is able to understand what sender wants to actually say. Listening
contributed in building strong relationship between individuals as reciver by actively
listening to information exchanged by sender feel more happy and satisfied. Manager need to
ensures that open and transparent working environment is provided to employees to share
their creative ideas as it lead to better communication and enhancing listening skill of others.
(JOSHI, 2017). Active and Empathetic are two main types of listening skills that helps in
making communication skills better and enriched various alternative option that are aviabale
for future growth and success. Such as:
Active listening: It is a type of listening in which receiver of information pays its full
attention rather than doing other things like filling nails or using mobile phones for fun and

entertainment. So we can say that the person is an active listener when it leaves all crucial
works and actively listen to other individual feelings, viewpoint so that it can understand the
information in a better manner.
Empathetic listening: It is another type of listening in which receiver has special
characteristics that helped its to understand emotions, feeling of people in a better manner. It
is most important communication skills which need to be presented in individual or manager
so that it can easily coordinate diverse individual to work as a team for achievements of
objectives (Chen, Yang, and Yu, 2017). Empathetic listening helps a person to find ways to
resolve anger or dissatisfaction of individuals thus motivate them to performed tasks in a
particular manner for getting the best outcome.
4 CONCLUSION
Thus, it can be stated from the above report that individuals by developing various
communication skills such as effective listening, verbal, and nonverbal communication.
Better communication skills help individuals to get various opportunities in their future
careers.
Analysis and discussion of a case study
It can be stated that from the case study that Pedro and Maria are husband and wife
so one day Maria has called Pedro to bring chicken when he came home. So, as soon as Pedro
came home took off its coat and went to the kitchen then it shouted where are you Maria so
she said where is chicken. Then Pedro realized that he headed kitchen instead of chicken so
such miscommunication has created misunderstanding between two people (McComb and
Kennedy, 2020). Therefore it can be analyzed through the model of Shannon and weaver.
Such as:
Sender: It can be illustrated that sender of information to brought chicken when coming
home was Maria which was encoded so that Pedro can understand the information.
Channel: Phones were channel used by Maria and Pedro to communicate that has created a
barrier of noise in communication that resulted in changing meaning that is rather to brought
a chicken Pedro understand to come to the kitchen while arriving at home (Sparks and
Wilson, 2019).
Receiver: Pedro was a receiver of information that have not taken feedback from Maria that
whether it has said kitchen or chicken that leads to confusion. Therefore, from this case or
incident, both Maria and Pedro learned about their respective mistakes and decided to
recheck or take feedback so that such circumstances cannot occur in the future.

Example of poor communication in the workplace
One of the example from my workplace that can be used to illustrate the way poor
communication has lead to ineffective coordination and confusion among staff members
regarding specific activities that they need to performed for achievements of specific
objectives. The examples of poor communication at my workplace can be well understood by
the use of Berlo’s S-M-C-R model that have explained about crucial elements of better
communication. Such as:
Sources: The person that share information is termed to be source form which information
have been arised such as in my workplace top management is responsible for providing
appropriate guidance and direction or the way task needed to be completed. Regular meeting
are held by top management to instruction employees about the way particular task need to be
performed so that company can gain competitive advantages.
Message: It referes to information that have been exchanged such as in my workplace
manager exchanged information in english at fast speed that created problem form receiver to
effective understand.
Channel: Face to face communication channel was used by top management of firm to
share respective instruction but due to fast speed, language barriers and less use of body
language have resulted in confusion between employees regarding activities that need to be
performed.
Receiver: Me and other individual or staff member that are working in enterprise are receiver
of information or instruction given by top management. I am unable to understand
information shared by top management due to lack of attention, language barrier and weak
relationship that resulted in overall poor communication and performance of employees.
Thus, manager need to improve communication within firm for effective achievements of
goals and satisfaction of customers requirements.
A suggestion of the way communication can be improved within the firm
Various recommendations or suggestions that can be used by the superior of the
company to enhance the communication process within the workplace and better
coordination of individuals for achievements of common goals. The Schramm model can be
used to suggest appropriate recommendations for improving communication within my
workplace. Such as:
It is the responsibilities and duties of both receiver and sender to ensure that
information that is delivered can be easily understood by receiver. So there should be

Thus, Superior needs to ensured that message has been delivered or information is
provided to the receiver at the same time have to take feedback from staff member
regarding that they have understood instruction or not (Leavitt, Keegan and Clark,
2016).
Staff members need to provide to open and transparent environment so that they can
share feeback regarding points that they are not able to understand at specific point of
view which can be further clearly so that good medical treatment can be given to a
patient.
At the same time equal responsibilities of employees or staff member that if they do
not understand particular instruction they are free to share to superior to repeat it
again so that no mistake can be made in future.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded from the above report that communication is a significant process
that helps in better sharing of someone's idea, feeling, and point of view for completion of a
task. language, psychological, emotional, or attitude of a specific person are some of the key
barriers that impact on effective communication. At last it can be concluded that both
receiver and sender should take active part in exchanging and understandning information so
that task can be performed in best possible manner.
