INTRODUCTION
Team development is the process of learning a work with a team and doing it effectively
is known as team development. In this project the importance of team will be shown in the
development of management in schools. This project takes the help of Tuckman's stages of team
development for identification of the role of a leader. This project also studies the managerial
decision-making for making decisions in a team. With the help of physical structural example

this project designates teamwork facilitation. This project also outlines the ways of promotion of
team work for a manager.
MAIN BODY
Stages of team development and the role of team leader in them
Team development in the management of schools can be explained by the help of
Tuckman's model. Tuckman introduced to the world four stages for team development. These
stages are very influential (Ekström, Rempling and Plos, 2019). The role of leader can be
explained in these stages of team development. These stages are,
Forming Stage :
This is that stage in which the team is getting use to its bearing, this stage requires the
team for someone to be a clear in-charge of the situation. Thus, the role of the leader in this stage
is of a director. The leader in this stage behaves directive, for explaining the members about the
objective of the team the leader arranges meeting and also keeps the track of every team
member. This is the stage in which the leader tells everyone what to do and what not to do. In
school the leaders are principles and it's the duty of the principles in this stage to hold meeting
and explaining all the teachers and staff about their roles. In this stage the team is very new to the
situation and thus require guidance from someone experienced in the form of leader. Example of
leadership in this stage is, there is a school named Great High which has recently established its
new branch in West London, now the teachers and the employees are new to the way of
teaching. Thus, the newly appointed principal of that school takes the initiative and designates
the teachers and staff their role and ways on how they will teach the students (Hunter Nikolaus,
2019).
Storming Stage :
This stage is the phase in which the teams start developing emotions which causes chaos
in the team. In this stage the role of the leader is to control by listening to the issues of the team
member. The leader in this stage acts like a coach provides instructions to the members about
how to do their work effectively. For a coach it is important to encourage and be supportive
towards the team leaders. In this stage the leader makes it clear to the team members on what
they should not do as a part of the team. It is in this stage when the leader ensure whether the
team members have to required skills for the presented task. In a school the leader which is the
principal listens to the query of the teacher which are having issues while teaching or are

explaining their experiences and suggestions to the principal. The principal of the school in this
stage also analyses the performance of its teacher in their respective classes and according to
their performance the principal also changes their roles sometimes. Example of this would be a
football team whose players have recently started playing with each other and are failing to
coordinate thus the coach helps them to coordinate with each other with the help of experience
and tactics (Bumbuc, 2018).
Norming Stage :
In this stage the team starts getting stronger and also starts making progress towards their
goals. It is the stage when the leader starts delegation of responsibility to each team members. In
this stage the work of the team members becomes very easy and as they are getting use to it, thus
the leaders starts assigning them more difficult tasks. The leader in this stage starts focusing on
building confidence in the team members and also making them face challenges they can
overcome. With the growth in the abilities and roles of the team members, they start becoming
self-assured. The leader shows collaborative qualities in this stages by involving themselves in
problem-solving, high level decision-making and also resolving conflicts. The principal of a
school in this stage of team development acts as collaborative unit for its teachers, students and
other staff. Principal in this stage assigns some teachers responsibilities, for example teaching a
particular lesson to the students before the examination, or getting all the assignments of the
students signed by the principal. This is how the principal pressurizes the teachers for giving a
better performance skills of teaching in the school (Curtindale and Krylova, 2019).
Performing Stage :
This is the stage in which the team are at the peak of their functionality. The team
members are assigned with optimum amount of work in this stage. This is the stage when the
teams can get used to a new management style as the members are very skilled and experience
enough to handle any situation. In this stage the leader has the role of having a vision of the work
by considering all the factors, internal as well as external. This is done by the leader to come up
with strategies which will allow the team to overcome the possible hindrances in the work. This
is how the leader plans the future in the stage and also focuses on continuous improvement of the
team's performance. The principal of a school in this stage analyses the performance of its school
as a whole and then makes strategical changes according to the errors and issues found in its
system. With the help of this the principal can suggest the teachers ways for improving the

teaching. For example in an organization which is running very smoothly the manager of the
organization makes future predictions of the company and its product. With the help of this the
manager is able to find out the upcoming challenges the company has to face thus its can prepare
its organization for it (Myers and et.al..2017).
Managerial decision-making in teams
Decision-making is a very important role and responsibility of a manager. For the
functionality of a team a manager or leader is the person which takes full responsibilities of its
decisions. In a school a principal is the person which makes most of the decisions. It is very
important for a leader to make decision while considering the suggestions and problems of the
team members. A manager should not take decisions which are against the team members. The
benefits of such decision-making by the manager are,
Stops defaulting consensus :
It has been seen that most of the managers tend to listen to the majority opinion of the
team members. This is done by the manager for stopping conflicts and maintaining harmony in
the team. Managerial decision-making making influences mangers for taking decision without
informing team members. Due to this uncomfortable decision may arise which might encourage
conflicts but this helps the managers for analysing the issues in the team (Chen, Xie and Zhou,
2020).
Increases Employee Engagement :
When a manager also involves the team members in the decision-making process this
builds trust in the employees which helps the manager in employee engagement. With the help of
employee the manager is allowed to understand the insights of the company and also understand
the operation in the base level from the employees. With the help of employee engagement the
leaders can easily make the employee achieve their goals as they can be frank and friendly
towards them (Gnezdilov, G.V., and et.al., 2020).
Collaboration and Communication :
With the help of managerial decision-making the manager is successful in engaging the
employees in the making decisions. A study has proved that when employees engage in decision-
making their rate of teamwork and collaboration in the team increases and the opposite happens
in those team which do not use managerial decision-making. This happens because it creates

opportunities for the team members to share their ideas and also learn from each other while
working towards a common goal.
Recognition of blind spots :
Manager uses the skill of self-awareness while making managerial decisions which help
the manager to understand strengths and weaknesses. This allows the manager to find the blind
spot or the issue regarding the performance on the team, which is then treated by the managers
by proper decision-making. These blind spots are areas where the team struggles the most and
can result as the future cause of a conflict. This is why it is important for a leader to identify the
blind spots.
Improves performance of individual :
A manager makes decision of improving the team. Team is made up of individuals which
are the members of the team. Whenever a manager is making decisions for a team it is very
important for the manager to consider the effect of the decision on every individual. By doing
this manager makes the decision which eventually benefits the team members. The performance
of the individuals can affect the performance of the team. Due to conflicts between the individual
it is the team which is affected the most (Барсукова, 2020).
Physical structure facilitation to teamwork
The physical structure of the work place influences the team work a lot. This happens
because the team members can facilitate the physical structure for better performance. For
example, for the success of a football team it is important for it to have proper training facilities
and physical structure for influencing their training as a team. The physical structure in a school
is also very important. The structure is affected by its geographical location. For example if the
school is located in location which is relatively cold, then the school will require heaters and
such facilities.
There are different ways the structure of a work place. The structure influences the
interactions between groups and also its effectiveness (Tazegül and Güven, 2018). By providing
proper sitting arrangement to the teams the structure can make them close to each other which
will affect the amount of interaction which happens in the work place. For example in a school a
teacher which has arranged the desks in classroom forming circle while the students are working
as a group. The teacher sometimes asks the students to exchange their seats with each other. This
is done by the teacher for increasing the interaction between the students. Thus, this is how the

teacher as leader uses the sitting arrangement of the team members to influence the collaboration
between the teams. This is done by the leaders for improving the interaction and cohesiveness in
the workplace. Another one of the example of such practices is seen in the Japanese firms which
follow the philosophy of emphasizing on group of processes and their team work. These firms
have designed their offices in such a way that there are no walls and the team can interact with
each other. The physical structure of a work place should also have proper resources which can
fulfil the needs of the individuals which form a team. These resources are related to the facilities,
equipments, technology and also other individual requirements. Whenever, there is scarcity of
the resources there are conflicts between the members of the group. This behaviour then results
in decrease of ability of the team members for achieving goals.
Managers promoting teamwork
When a group of people work together as a single unit, they produce work which is more
effective and productive than when they all work as a single individual. Many humans have
individualism them and they tend focus on individual task which does not include other people in
the process. The main aim in such situations becomes to make the team work collectively and
include other people in the course of action (ELLIS, 2018). A manager helps in producing
effective understanding between employees and makes them work together. With the right way,
any manager could make team develop. When the work place atmosphere is trust and
cooperative it will help the employees to reach the goals, manage their time effectively and work
all in under budget. There are certain ways in which a manager can create an organisational
culture where employees are motivated to work as a whole team. These include:
Lead the way: As a manger one must follow the style of what they want the team
members to adopt. By promoting team working attitude within oneself will help in motivating
others to do the same. A good manager encourages the team to work with them and work on a
project which involves working of some other employee too (Meng and Boyd, 2017). They must
support the employee on every step they take or every stage of the project they are in within the
company and learn employee’s way to working style in the whole process. There are some
employees who will not ask for any kind of support but supporting them regardless will them
appreciate the efforts and make the workspace more team driven. Managers should set an
example for every employee to follow all of them to work together.

Give targets to the group: There should be a proper vision and defines goals and
objectives on which the team should work. This process is not difficult when the group is
working as a team. Setting a clear and achievable goal makes the employee work to strive
towards it and together. Developing clear guidelines of the expectations and manage can see its
team to work together to achieve a common goal (Salas, and et.al., 2020). An organisation must
have long term goals and must make all the employees be aware of these. Managers can set these
goals with different difficulty levels and must increase the task level with every project. When
the group members cross the milestones they will become committed and stay dedicated to the
company.
Provide rewards: Rewarding the team when they achieve the set goals keeps them
motivated towards the company. The best way a manager can motivate the team is by offering
them with some reward scheme. If the whole team is to be rewarded then they will work and
help each other if they know they will be rewarded for their own and colleague’s good show.
Rewarding individual can help when they are showing willingness to bring the team together and
adopt team working attitude.
Team meeting: Making every meeting happening in the organisation into a team
meeting. Many employees hesitate to be involved with their colleagues and thus result in gaining
less knowledge about other roles and projects (Borowiecki, Kusio and Siuta-Tokarska, 2019). To
avoid this to happen, a manger must transform individual meetings into team efforts. Invite the
team to sit for a meeting where they can put their ideas and understand each member’s role.
CONCLUSION
It can be evaluated that each organisation works well when the employees work together
as a team. Emerging teams are the key feature of modern workplace. When the company works
as a team then they can adapt to any changes and make the company survive during difficult
times. Promoting team work is one of the key roles of the managers. Adapting to Team working
culture in the staff is not difficult. It just requires few changes which can lead the way to
employees working together and offering help to each other. Leaders play an important role in
development of the team at each stage. When the team works as a whole group, decision making

becomes easy and fast. There have been many physical structures which will help in smoothing
the progress of team work.
